Chapter 3

Author: Moonchaser
Out of the corner of my eye, I noticed Callum's gaze fixed intently on me. Clear displeasure was written all over his face.

"Just as I thought… You're still upset about yesterday. You're mad that I canceled the ceremony at the last minute, aren't you?"

The elder tactfully excused himself from the office and gave us privacy.

The moment the door closed, Callum marched forward and accusatorily said, "I told you—Seraphina's leg injury flared up, so I had to cancel the ceremony.

"Since when did you become so petty, Nova? This isn't how a future Luna behaves."

I kept my voice as flat and steady as I could. "I'm not mad; I'm just tired, so I want to take a vacation in the central lands and get some rest."

Callum crossed his arms and frowned in confusion. "If you want a vacation, just take leave. If you suddenly resign, wolves in the pack will think you have something against Seraphina. She's an outsider Omega, so how is she supposed to work in the pack if rumors start?"

He had forgotten that I had used up all my annual leave this year, all spent preparing for the 52 ceremonies he canceled. Yet the only thing on his mind right now was Seraphina's standing in the pack.

A cold despair settled in my heart as my gaze drifted back to the glaring scratch mark on his neck, and I said nothing.

He noticed where I was looking and instinctively covered it, his gaze flickering. "It's just a scratch from thorns in the forest, so don't overthink it."

I was a little surprised that he had not flared up at my stare; instead, he tried to explain.

But the lie was painfully pathetic. Any adult wolf could tell the difference between a thorn's tear and the claw's scratch.

The old me would have been blinded by love and believed him, but now, I simply nodded and stayed silent.

Callum visibly relaxed and seemed convinced that I was appeased. Smiling, he draped an arm over my shoulder like he was granting me a favor.

"That's more like it. You have to be magnanimous if you want to be the future Luna.

"Drop this resignation nonsense. Tonight, I'll take you to Moonstone Restaurant for a tomahawk steak; consider it my way of making it up to you."

When I still said nothing, he took my silence for consent.

Any thought of giving him a proper goodbye was quietly crushed. I didn't even want to tell him that I was returning to the Darkhowlers pack.

"Alpha Callum!"

The office door burst open without a knock as Seraphina barged in.

Startled, Callum immediately dropped the arm around my shoulders.

She playfully stuck out her tongue and cast me an innocent glance before turning to him.

"Sorry for interrupting your date with Nova, Alpha Callum, but I had no choice. I don't quite understand this medical report…"

Without a second thought, Callum walked straight toward her.

He took the file from her and lowered his head to patiently ask what she did not understand.

Seraphina pressed close to him on purpose. Right before my eyes, they murmured as if an invisible barrier encased them in a world no one could enter.

Naturally, Seraphina slipped her arm through his and steered him toward the door. Just before it closed, she looked back at me and shot me the sharp, provocative smile of a victor.

After the door slammed shut, the office fell silent; only the sound of my heavy breathing remained.

A second later, a sharp crack came from my wrist. The smooth moonstone bracelet had slipped off and shattered against the marble floor. It had snapped for no reason at all.

It was a gift from Callum for our first anniversary. He had told me that he hoped our bond would be as pure and whole as the moonstone, blessed by the Moon Goddess.

I stayed silent for a long time.

Ignoring the sting as the sharp fragments cut into my fingertips, I gathered the broken pieces one by one. Along with whatever trace of reluctance I still harbored, I dropped them all into the trash can.

After the ridiculous spectacle, I made it clear to the entire healing center that I would no longer easily accept courtship from any he-wolf, nor would I accept any sweet gestures again. To me, nothing was more important than establishing my foothold among the healers.Callum never showed up again, so I assumed he had returned to the Silvermoon pack.Meanwhile, I gradually secured my footing in the Darkhowlers pack. I healed one complex wolf plague after another, cured curses, and stabilized critical injuries. Eventually, I became a household name among healers.By accident, my colleagues discovered my relationship with my parents. I was worried they would see me as just another nepotism hire, but to my surprise, they laughed."No wonder you're so skilled! You've inherited the premier healing bloodline of the chief healers' family!"A healer who combines both hard work and talent is truly the pride of the Darkhowlers pack!"As I listened to their genuine praise, I felt a weigh

I thought Callum would finally leave the Darkhowlers pack after that. But the next day, he recreated the scene of our first Luna Coronation Ceremony attempt, wore the Alpha crown I had custom-made for him back then, and smiled at me as he stood off to the side."Nova, my fated mate. Will you be my Luna?"My colleagues around us, who were clueless about our history, started cheering."Say yes! Say yes!"Rage flared in my chest. After days of harassment, I could not believe that he had the audacity to think I would take him back. When I decided that I had finally had enough, I slapped him hard across the face, right in front of all my colleagues.A sharp crack echoed in the open air.The cheering died instantly. All that remained was the rustle of leaves by the wind.My colleagues exchanged looks. None dared say a word again after seeing my lethal fury.Callum's eyes were filled with sorrow as he tried to step closer to me. But I instinctively recoiled to maintain a safe dist

Callum said nothing. All he did was stubbornly force the bracelet into my hand.I looked at the bracelet he had shoved onto me and let out a dry, mocking laugh. Then, I tossed it right into the roadside trash can again. When it hit the trash can with a clatter, I heard it shatter for the second time.Callum's eyes widened, and he stood frozen for a long beat as if it was his heart that had shattered."I used to cherish the bracelet because I loved you. Back then, I would have treasured a blade of grass if it came from you, but now that I despise you, anything that reminds me of you annoys me. It makes me sick to my stomach."As I spoke, I watched his eyes well up with tears. It was the first time I had ever seen the proud Alpha cry.But I had cried plenty of times for him. I had cried the first time I treated his near-fatal injuries, when he had been beaten bloody by rogue wolves hired by a rival pack.I had sobbed uncontrollably the first time he abandoned me for Seraphina on t

It was late at night by the time I returned to the Darkhowlers pack. Father and Mother were waiting for me at the border gates. The moment I saw them, I dropped all the composure I had built and ran forward. After throwing myself into their arms, I choked, "Father… Mother…"Father stroked my hair and smiled warmly. "All that matters is that you're home. A daughter of the Darkhowlers pack will always have somewhere to return to. This will forever be your strongest refuge."Everything in the house looked exactly as it had when I left. After only two days of rest, I started working at the elite healing center my parents had founded. They kept a low profile and never told anyone I was their daughter, so I followed the standard procedure and started from the bottom as a junior healer. I had to pass a probationary period to keep the job.Despite the hard work, I felt lighter and happier because from today onward, I was living for myself. If I could be the best healer in the small Sil

The elder was just about to head home from work when Callum blocked him at the office door.As Callum panted and teetered on the edge of losing control of his shift, his eyes were bloodshot. His voice came out as a jagged rasp. "Did Nova resign?"The elder looked at the unhinged Callum with slight confusion. "Do you seriously not know? She submitted her resignation and application for a mate bond dissolution today. "She said it had nothing to do with you, and that she'd find a time to talk to you about it. It was obvious that she had made up her mind, so I approved it."Fragments of memory flickered through his mind of when I had tried to speak and hesitated, only for him to be pulled away by Seraphina's syrupy voice. Just this morning, he had defended Seraphina and chided me for being difficult.Throughout the entire day, he had not given me the chance to speak to him alone. His eyes had only been for Seraphina, an outsider Omega.Suddenly, he grabbed the elder's shoulders and

Seraphina had long since sobered up. Only a single dim amber wall lamp glowed in the room and cast an intimate haze.In the faint light, she wore a lace slip nightgown and ran her hands over Callum's body. "Alpha…" she purred.Callum did not hesitate. He flung her hand aside as a flash of pure irritation sparked in his wolf eyes. "Don't touch me."Though just a single sentence, his words carried the full weight of an Alpha's authority and froze the trembling Seraphina in place.Callum kept trying to initiate a mind link, but the mind link that once connected our souls was now utterly silent. It was so empty as if it had never existed at all."No… That's impossible. Nova is just saying this because she's upset."Then, he bolted upright. "Right. I just have to go home. She must be waiting for me to come home and coax her back."As the thought crossed his mind, he immediately slipped on his shoes and stormed out the door. Ignoring Seraphina's tearful cries behind him, he shifted
