Chapter 1

"Donna, wait up."

A sugary voice came from behind me. It was Fiona.

She was Elio's new assistant, and she was always hanging off him.

I'd told Elio more than once how I felt about her.

He'd only smile and tell me not to be so sensitive.

I stopped.

Fiona hurried around in front of me, her red lips parted, catching her breath.

"Donna, the Don... the Don says please don't be upset."

"He can't speak for himself? He needs you to carry his messages?"

"You know how it is." She gave me a wounded look. "The Don won't leave the meeting."

His rules again.

The Wednesday meeting, nine to eleven, was the one time that could never be interrupted. Not even for me.

And that was hardly the only one. Elio had plenty of rules.

Like how he only used things he'd chosen himself.

He had never once worn the wedding anniversary watch I gave him.

But he'd fasten himself the cheap cufflinks from Fiona, then stand at the mirror straightening his cuffs.

He couldn't stand anyone touching his things.

Even when I was shivering, he wouldn't lend me his coat.

But one word from Fiona about being cold, and he'd take off his own scarf and drape it over her.

Seven years of therapists never cured Elio's OCD.

Then Fiona showed up, and overnight it was gone.

But I was the one who was his wife. His Donna.

"Why don't I call the Don, have him tell you himself."

She was already dialing as she said it.

I started to tell her not to waste her breath, because Elio never took calls during a meeting.

The next second, he picked up.

Something in my chest ached. At Fiona's little nod, I took the phone.

"Danielle, are you angry?" Elio asked, as if coaxing a little girl. "I'm sorry. You know how I am."

"I don't accept apologies over the phone."

My voice came out hard. "Come find me. We'll settle this face to face."

There was a moment of silence, and I could all but picture the troubled way he'd be knitting his brow.

"Sweetheart, it's not eleven yet. You know I can't break my own rule."

Rules.

Never taking a call during a meeting was another of his rules.

My fingers tightened around Fiona's phone before I knew it. I hung up and tossed it back to her.

She watched me with a faint smile, something scornful flickering in her eyes.

I held back the tears, turned, and strode toward the garage.

I drove fast, with nowhere to go. A little dog shot into the road, I wrenched the wheel, and the car hit a lamppost.

The instant the airbag deployed, pain tore through my ribs.

Without thinking, I called Elio.

It rang once, then cut off.

I called again through the pain, and again it cut off.

By the seventh try the call finally connected, and by then I was drenched in sweat from the pain.

His sigh came through, clear and just a little impatient.

"Danielle, I'm in a meeting. I don't want any calls disturbing me."

The airbag had me pinned against the seat and I could barely breathe. I got the words out in broken pieces.

"Elio... I've been in an accident... come get me..."

Silence on the line.

Then Elio's urgent voice.

"Give me the address. I'll send someone for you right away."

It felt like a needle had jabbed straight into my heart.

"Elio. I want you to come get me."

It was a while before I heard his troubled voice again.

"Sweetheart, it's only five past ten. The meeting isn't over yet..."

"But I need you. I need you right now."

I was nearly screaming. "I've been in a crash. Can't you break the rule just once, for me?"

This time I waited a full minute before I heard his answer.

"Danielle, don't push me... you know I can't..."

He said he couldn't.

That needle-point of pain burst all at once and turned into a hurricane that swept through me.

I gave the address and hung up.

The better part of an hour later, the men Elio sent got me out and drove me to the hospital.

In the car I was scrolling social media when Fiona's new post happened to come up.

She was standing outside, a kitten in her arms, a tender-faced Elio beside her, and the caption read:

[When I realized my kitten had run off I nearly cried. Thank God the boss went with me to find her right away.]

I checked the time it was posted. 10:50.

And he'd just told me he couldn't.

So it wasn't that he couldn't leave the meeting. He just couldn't leave it before eleven, for me.

The pain in my ribs seemed to shoot straight to my heart.

And as the tears slid down, all at once it came to me.

I was completely done with it.

Elio's coat still carried his warmth."I really do love you, Danielle. I can change. I can change every bit of it."He looked at me, his gaze both tender and desperate. "Come back with me, my Donna."A pity that this warmth came seven years too late.No feeling, however alive, can survive seven years of wind and sun.My love for him had died long ago.I slipped off his coat and handed it back to him."It's too late, Elio. There's no time left.""Sign the divorce papers."I patted Elio on the shoulder. "I believe you. I believe you love me even now."I turned to look at the sea in the distance. The sea was so blue it seemed to hold some beautiful meaning within it.I smiled. "But I don't love you anymore. Let go."The words had barely left me when Elio jolted hard, as if he'd touched a live wire. His tears broke loose like a bursting dam.In seven years, it was the first time I'd ever seen Elio cry.But inside I felt nothing, as detached as if I were watching a ham actor weep on a scree

The next time I saw Elio was early the following morning.I'd chosen to meet him by the sea.He looked like he hadn't slept all night, the bags under his eyes a dull, dark gray, his exhaustion impossible to hide."Danielle..." He gave me a careful glance. "I did what you said. I took Fiona to a hospital.""Good." I nodded. "Was there time to reattach the finger?"He faltered, then shook his head. "I don't know. I dropped her off and left."I raised an eyebrow.Silence circled over our heads like a vulture.Elio broke the silence."Danielle, do you believe me now? I feel nothing at all for Fiona.""I love you. I love only you, Danielle."His words came faster and faster, thick with tears. "Come back to New York with me, I'm begging you."I looked at his grieving face, then out at the sea.The tide was going out, laying bare a wide stretch of mudflat.Like a wound in the sea."There's no going back, Elio. It's like a drop of wine that can never return to the grape it came from."I looked

It was one in the morning when the phone woke me.I picked it up and saw a video call request from Fiona.I hung up.She sent a message.Donna, please pick up the video call, or I'll die.I was still staring at it when she called again.I sighed and answered. On the screen, Fiona was drenched in sweat, her eyes bloodshot, her voice full of shock and fear."Donna, I'm begging you, please go back with the Don.""He says if you won't, he'll prove to you himself that he doesn't love me..."Her whole face collapsed, crumpling like a wadded-up sheet of paper."He's going to cut off my fingers... please, Donna, save me..."I raised an eyebrow, mulled it over for a moment, and said, "Where's Elio?"The picture jolted, and Elio came into frame."Danielle, everything I told you is true. I didn't lie to you.""The truth is I've been sick to death of Fiona for a long time. If you don't believe me, I'll prove it myself."With that, he drew a dagger, its blade glinting cold.Fiona shrieked outright

[Elio's Point of View]Elio stood at the floor-to-ceiling window of his hotel suite. The moon hung alone in the sky like a gnawed bone someone had tossed up there. He gripped the papers in his hand. The divorce agreement Danielle had given him. He'd come all the way from New York to Sicily for one thing: to bring Danielle home.Instead, all he was leaving with was a set of divorce papers. He'd refused to accept it and dug in his heels, until Don Gallo had his men haul him out.Elio was still turning over how to win Danielle back when a knock came at the door."Danielle!"He threw the door open, his face lit with excitement. The next second, the smile froze solid on his face.Fiona stood there worrying the hem of her dress, looking up at him meekly.Looking at her face, Elio felt a moment of vertigo. She really was the very image of a young Dolores. He'd first met Fiona when she came to interview for the assistant position. The moment he saw that face, it struck him like a bolt of light

That evening my father and I were at dinner when the butler came in."Miss Danielle. Don Moretti is asking to see you."I raised an eyebrow.Elio's private jet really was in for repairs. How had he gotten here?I thought about it and answered, "Let him in."A moment later Elio came in, empty-handed.He took off his hat in a show of respect to my father. "Don Gallo, I came in a rush and had no time to prepare a gift. Forgive me."My father gave him a glance and said nothing.I kept my head down, cutting my steak. "It doesn't matter. We didn't prepare any dinner for you either."He said my name plaintively. "Danielle..."I lifted my eyes to him.He looked far more haggard than before. His eyes were webbed with fine red threads, and heavy dark shadows hung beneath them.Stubble covered his face in a gray shadow, with nothing left of the polished man he'd been."Isn't your jet in for repairs?" I couldn't help asking. "How did you get here?""I flew commercial."He answered at once, wearing

Fiona came hurrying toward me, dragging a suitcase. When she reached me, she was gasping for breath, and she blurted out in a panic."Donna... the Don sent me to find you...""He said... I'm to apologize to you... so you'll stop being angry..."I looked at her and said nothing, only smiled coldly. She was drenched in sweat from running, and I could even catch the sour smell of it coming off her.I covered my nose and took a step back. "So this is his solution. Hide behind a woman and send you out to take the hit?"Fiona gave an awkward laugh."The Don's private jet happens to be in for repairs. You know he can't stand flying commercial.""He sent me ahead to apologize, and told me I absolutely had to talk you into coming back."She bowed to me, a full ninety degrees at the waist, and said in earnest."Donna, I was wrong. I've done you wrong.""Please forgive me. Please come back to New York with me."There was a sob in her voice.I couldn't hold back a laugh."Do you think you're that
