Chapter 235

Author: Summer Knowles
"I'm fine," Sarah forced a smile.

Despite her best efforts, Mia's therapy showed no progress. Mia's connection to her seemed too deeply rooted. She couldn't figure out how to alter Mia's subconscious in the short term, and she'd discussed this with Scott.

During their sessions, she'd found Mia easy to hypnotize, suggesting a generally malleable mind. Yet on this one issue, Mia showed incredible resistance, stubbornly pulling Sarah into that memory.

After sending Mia to rest, Sarah sat alone on the couch, lost in thought for nearly two hours until Melvin returned.

He was startled to see her. Holding up a wine bottle, he asked, "Care for a drink?"

"Sure."

They hadn't sat together like this since her father's death when Melvin took over the company. After her marriage to James, they'd barely seen each other.

Melvin had assumed Sarah was either acting out or avoiding painful memories, so he'd kept his distance. That is, until he saw her situation in the news.

Sarah fetched two wine

Sarah gave a faint smile. “I just meant that she’s spent her whole life being someone else’s stand-in. All that pain and humiliation, just so she could look a little more like me. Isn’t that pathetic? She went through hell for it, and in the end, the money she was promised never came. I’d say that’s the real reason her mother got kicked out of the hospital.”Leon frowned. “You shouldn’t have any contact with the outside world. How do you even know all that?”Sarah calmly cut into her steak, her face unreadable. “When Vivian brought Mandy to see me, I already knew everything.”A faint smile tugged at her lips. “I know you’re suspicious of me, but don’t be so naïve. Don’t let people lead you around like a fool.”Leon swallowed his last bite of steak and smiled slightly. “You don’t need to remind me.”---At the Chancer estate.“Madam,” the maid said, holding a cleaning caddy, “I was just going upstairs to tidy up.”Charlotte frowned and stopped her. “Didn’t I say the upstairs sho

“If I could tell, I wouldn’t be here,” Leon said, resting his chin on his hand.Vivian gave a faint, bitter smile. “So you came all this way just to ask me that? Don’t forget about the acquisition. I still need your help. I want Zachary to regret what he did—completely.”Leon’s expression darkened. His gaze swept over the mess on the floor, empty wine bottles scattered around the sofa. “You’ve turned into someone I don’t even recognize. What happened to you? How did you end up like this?”Her hair was a tangled mess, her eyes sunken, her whole face pale and lifeless.Vivian suddenly lost control. “It’s all because of Sarah!” she shouted.Leon frowned. “Her? What did she do?”“Because of her, Zachary cut me off. I’ll never forgive that woman.” Vivian’s voice trembled with anger, her hands shaking. In a sudden outburst, she stepped closer to Leon and yanked open her blouse. Her chest was covered in bruises and bite marks, raw and red, some half-healed, others still inflamed. It lo

They stepped into the elevator. Leon thought to himself that the Wilsons must be running out of money, otherwise Vivian would never live in a place like this. She had always been picky about comfort and standards. They knocked. The door took a long time to open.Vivian froze when she saw Leon, then frowned. “What are you doing here?” she asked.“You look wrecked after only a few days. I couldn’t find you. Where have you been?” Leon snapped.Vivian’s face was drawn and her eyes were bloodshot. When she saw Leon, she remembered the call she’d made the day she was taken and his missed calls. Anger flashed across her face. “Why didn’t you pick up that day?” she demanded.Leon sank into the sofa like he owned the place, one leg casually propped on the coffee table. He sounded bored. “You messed up before. This was just a lesson.”“So you have no idea what I went through?” Vivian bit her lip.Leon raised an eyebrow. “Oh? And what exactly did you go through?”“Enough of that. What a

“What are you doing?” Leon asked, his brows furrowing tightly.Sarah flinched and looked at him, tense and guilty. “Nothing.”He didn’t buy it. In two quick strides, he reached her and yanked the towel away. A butterfly mark on her shoulder had smeared onto the fabric, stained with a trace of red.Leon’s face darkened. He tossed the towel into the sink. “What is this?”Sarah said nothing. Clutching her shoulder, she brushed past him and hurried out of the bathroom. “It’s none of your business!”If what happened in M City had only made him suspicious, what he’d seen in the old apartment building now convinced him this really was Sarah. But the red-stained butterfly mark complicated everything.Until he was absolutely certain, he didn’t want to push her too far. When he stepped out, Sarah was sitting on the sofa, her expression blank as she stared at the news on TV.Leon turned back to his study. There was only one person who could give him an answer. He dialed a number. After a

James didn’t answer. He just kept bidding, stubborn and silent.Sarah frowned as the tension in the room climbed higher.“Three hundred and fifty million!” the host called out. “Going once!”Leon started to raise his paddle again, but Julian leaned close and whispered, “Sir, your father’s already asking questions.”Leon cursed under his breath and slammed his paddle down. With an amount that large, his father would know immediately.“Enough,” he snapped. “Don’t say another word.”At the same time, James lifted his paddle again, but Charlotte caught his wrist and pressed it down. “Are you trying to humiliate me?” she hissed. “James, in case you’ve forgotten, I’m your wife.”Her words hit him like cold water. He froze, then lowered the paddle. In the end, Zachary won the bid. He spent hundreds of millions for a single jewelry box, and everyone knew exactly who it was meant for. When the auction ended, Sarah walked out flanked by Zachary and Melvin.Leon slammed the armrest tw

Before anyone else noticed, the host spotted it first. “Bid number 03, three hundred million!”A wave of shocked gasps spread across the room. Very few people knew who the mysterious “guest of honor” was. Most had assumed the antique jewellery box from the Sanders family was meant to catch his attention. No one expected his bid to be for Zachary’s painting.Zachary’s lips curved slightly. Under Leon’s sharp, warning stare, he casually brushed a strand of hair from Sarah’s shoulder. No one dared to bid after the “guest of honor” had raised his paddle. Zachary stopped as well.“The next item,” the host announced, “is an antique jewellery box.”An usher carried the antique jewelry box onto the stage. The camera zoomed in, filling the big screen with its image—a box made of polished goldenwood, its surface inlaid with tiny gemstones that caught the light like stars. The filigree edges and delicate carvings shimmered under the spotlights, giving it an almost royal elegance. It was a f
