Chapter 2

Author: Summer Knowles
Sarah listened to the conversation outside the study, her eyes downcast.

During her years as James’s wife, she had given everything to her mother-in-law and sister-in-law Lucy. When Lucy had her car accident, Sarah had stayed at the hospital for days. She'd always shown nothing but respect and care for Mrs. Chancer. Yet it seemed no amount of devotion could change how the Chancer family saw her.

Shortly after, Scarlett Larson called, her voice tired, "Sasa, are you sure you won't come? You used to love hunting outdoors, and you'd get to race cars too."

Sarah froze. Memories she'd buried deep came flooding back. Before marrying James, she'd loved hunting, racing cars, and good wine. Then she met James at the Larson estate and fell head over heels. After falling for him, she learned through others that James preferred gentle, trad wife. So she'd gradually given up everything she loved.

Three years had passed, and she'd almost forgotten who she used to be.

On the other end of the line, Scarlett continued rambling, "Sasa, if you don't want James to know, you can keep it from him. There's no need to give up everything for a man. Besides, James..."

"We're getting divorced," Sarah cut her off quietly.

Scarlett seemed stunned, then took a deep breath, "Did you finally come to your senses, or did James lose his mind?"

Sarah gave a small laugh, "He asked for it. I agreed."

Scarlett was speechless, thinking James must be blind. The Chancers should have counted their lucky stars to have someone like Sarah, and now they were divorcing?

"Congratulations, babe!" Scarlett's voice turned excited. "I'll pick you up soon. We should celebrate you finally seeing clearly."

Sarah hung up with a bitter smile. She looked around the master bedroom, which showed no signs of being shared by a couple. After three years of marriage, it might as well have belonged to a single person.

It really was time to end this.

Sarah went to the guest room to pack her things. She didn't have many clothes - after marriage, she'd stopped caring about her appearance - so packing didn't take long.

She removed her wedding ring and placed it on the bedside table, her eyes reflecting a mixture of regret and relief.

As she pulled her suitcase toward the door, she passed through the living room. She thought she should at least say goodbye to her former mother-in-law, but Lucy's bitter voice cut in first.

"Someone is finally leaving. Know your place - hanging around our family all these years just for money. You're nothing but a sparrow trying to fly with the eagles…”

Sarah stopped in her tracks and without hesitation, grabbed the glass of water from the table and threw it in Lucy's face.

Drenched from head to toe, Lucy exploded, "Sarah, have you lost your mind? How dare you..."

Sarah calmly wiped the water droplets from her fingers and replied coolly, "I dare plenty. I might be a sparrow, but I still have claws.”

Lucy stood there speechless, clearly shocked that this was the same Sarah everyone had pushed around.

Sarah found Lucy's surprise amusing. For three years, no matter how harsh Lucy and Mrs. Chancer had been, she'd done everything perfectly to please them without complaint. She'd always been gentle and patient, quietly enduring their bitter words and anger.

They'd forgotten that before all this, Sarah had been wild and free - drinking, fighting, and living life on her own terms.

She'd put up with enough. No more.

Sarah let out a soft chuckle.

“Then we have nothing to be afraid of,” Sarah said, her voice steady and unwavering. “It doesn’t matter who tries to move against us. You can trust me completely, Melvin, just as I trust you. Do what you need to do. Dig as deep as you have to. Don’t let the ‘what-ifs’ slow you down. Just know that I’m right here behind you.”Melvin hadn't expected her to be so resolute. When he first uncovered the discrepancies, a dark part of him feared that Sarah might turn her suspicion on him, too—that the sins of the father would poison the bond between the cousins. He realized now how wrong he’d been. He offered a self-deprecating smile, the tension finally leaving his shoulders. “I hear you. "I understand,” she whispered. But the hollow weight of those words followed her all the way home. The moment Sarah stepped through the front door, she pulled out her phone. As expected, every social media platform was in a total meltdown. The headlines were plastered with Mindy’s face and the "scandalous" abortion revelation. Half the internet was jumping to her defense, while the other half was gleefully digging up every piece of dirt they could find to bury her career once and for all.Sarah was still scrolling when Melvin walked in. He looked weary, a shadow hanging over him that had become all too common lately. Every time he looked at Sarah, he was reminded of the secrets their parents harbored. Though Uncle Shane claimed to be blissfully unaware of his wife’s schemes, Melvin wasn't buying it anymore. He had spent the last few days scouring the company’s records from the past two years. Beneath the surface of his father’s "peaceful retirement," Melvin had found a different st

Mindy immediately forced a bright, desperate smile and hurried to Mr. Hernandez’s side, looping her arm through his. "Mr. Hernandez! What are you doing here?"He didn’t answer. With a slow, deliberate movement, he peeled her hand off his sleeve as if removing an unwanted insect. His eyes, cold and piercing, locked onto Zachary."Zachary Reynolds,” Hernandez said, his voice a low, dangerous rumble. "I’ve heard much about the infamous Zachary Reynolds of the East Coast. A pleasure to finally meet—though I wish the circumstances were less... intrusive."Zachary met his gaze with a terrifying calm. He had never met the man, but the moment Mindy had uttered the name "Hernandez," the pieces clicked into place. There was only one Hernandez family powerful enough to command this kind of fear, and they hailed from the coast.Zachary offered a curt nod, his silence speaking volumes.Hernandez didn't seem to care. He turned his attention toward Sarah, his lip curling slightly. "Mr. Reynolds,

Sarah cast a long, searching look at Lucas before turning her gaze toward Mindy.Mindy was white-knuckling her microphone, her mind clearly racing to find an exit strategy. "I... I didn't..." she stammered. The poise she’d displayed during the first two questions had evaporated, replaced by a twitchy, visible guilt that everyone in the room could sense. Before she could dig a deeper hole, her manager stormed onto the stage, shoving the host aside with zero ceremony."That’s enough!" the manager barked, snatching the mic right out of Mindy’s hand. He stepped in front of her like a human shield. "These allegations are pure fiction. I’ve just confirmed with the organizers that this 'gentleman' went rogue with his questions. We have no idea what kind of conspiracy is behind this, but let’s be real—Mindy’s arrival on the East Coast is a threat to certain people’s interests. Clearly, they’ve become desperate enough to play dirty."Without waiting for a rebuttal, the manager hauled Mindy

“However,” Mindy continued after a brief pause, “it wasn’t until I finished this song just now that I truly understood something. Avoidance doesn’t work.”Her voice was steady, but resolute.“Only by bringing danger into the open can people take it seriously. Only then can those who want to contribute prepare themselves mentally and stay alert.“Yes, it can be risky. But every time I see those children smile, every time I hear them reading aloud, I feel genuinely happy.”She looked out over the crowd.“So please don’t let what I’ve shared today stop you from volunteering. Not every place is like that. Thank you. That’s all I wanted to say.”She finished in one breath, as if finally releasing emotions she had kept buried for far too long. The livestream comments flooded with sympathy. Many viewers who had volunteered before echoed her words, confirming the reality she described. The host glanced instinctively toward Zachary in the front row.Yes. These questions had been prepar

What was wrong with the organizers? And this host?Mindy felt a sharp prickle of irritation, but with dozens of lenses tracking her every move, the mask didn't slip. She offered the cameras a soft, practiced smile.“Of course,” Mindy said, her tone smooth as silk. “It’s been a while since I’ve done a formal sit-down. If it takes me a moment to find the words, I hope you’ll all be patient with me.”The host didn't skip a beat, snapping his cue cards to the next page.“This first one comes from a fan in Harbour City. Miss Hicks, you’ve said in the past that you didn’t plan on staying in the country long-term. Why the sudden, unannounced return to the East Coast?”Mindy tilted her head, a lock of hair falling perfectly over her shoulder. “I don’t see it as a mystery,” she replied gently. “And have people forgotten? Before I went abroad, I spent years building my life here. Returning didn't feel like a move—it felt like coming home.”The host offered a thin, professional smile and fl
