Chapter 971

Penulis: Summer Knowles
She wrapped her arms tightly around Scarlett.

"You're okay. You're safe now."

Scarlett seemed to understand her. Slowly, she calmed down. Then, like nothing had happened, she went back to drinking her porridge, one spoonful at a time.

Sarah watched her closely. She was a licensed psychologist, but she also knew not every trauma could be fixed with therapy alone. In Scarlett’s case, all her training seemed useless. The only hope now… was Steven.

Scarlett’s entire world before the incident had revolved around him. Whatever pain she carried—he was both the knot and the key.

That evening, Melvin came home.

“Did you find them?” Sarah asked coldly.

Melvin’s expression was grim.

“The hallway footage shows a bunch of guys going in and out. We compared their faces with the bar’s main floor footage and managed to identify everyone who entered that VIP room. There were 23 people in total. Thirteen have been cleared. The remaining ten? Gone.”

“Gone?” Sarah narrowed her eyes. “You mean th

Sarah shook her head hard. “That’s not true!”“Oh? Did I say anything wrong?” Mrs. Sanders replied lightly. “Sasa, if you’d never met Zachary, none of this would’ve happened, right? And I don’t mean that to blame you—just stating a fact. Your father adored you. I just feel bad for your family, that’s all.”“I don’t want to talk about my dad,” Sarah said, her face pale with anger. But Mrs. Sanders didn’t stop. In fact, she smiled even brighter.“Sasa, you really don’t handle stress well. Haven’t you been through worse? I’m only bringing up your dad because I want you to remember how much he loved you. Don’t throw that away for some man. I still remember when you were little and got sick. He stayed by your side day and night, didn’t even care about the company. Your uncle and I had to step in and help because he was run ragged.”Her words were slow, deliberate.Sarah looked up and stared her down. “So what you’re really saying is, I’m to blame for my dad’s death?”Mrs. Sanders imm

Sarah lowered her gaze. She knew this day would come the moment she moved in.Mrs. Sanders didn’t wait for a response and kept talking.“Of course, that little townhouse your parents left behind isn’t bad either. Now that they’re both gone, it’s a nice space for just one person. How about I go with you in a few days and help you get it tidied up?”Sarah couldn’t hold it in anymore. She looked up and fixed Mrs. Sanders with a cold stare.“So you came all this way just to remind me to get the hell out of here?”“Now, now—listen to yourself. What kind of tone is that? We’re family. Why would I ever want to kick you out?” Mrs. Sanders leaned back against the couch and took a sip of tea. “But let’s be real, even if the words sound harsh, the logic’s not wrong. When your cousin gets married, how could you two keep living under the same roof?”Sarah let out a cold laugh.“Auntie, it’s just the two of us in this house. You don’t have to pretend anymore. Don’t think I’ve forgotten what hap

Sure enough, right after commenting on the girl in the first photo, Mrs. Sanders quickly changed the subject.“By the way, I heard from your cousin that after the car accident, your memory came back. So… you remember everything now? Three years ago, right after your father passed, you suddenly announced you were marrying James. We were all shocked you made that choice. But as your aunt, I just wanted to ask—what really happened when you went missing back then?”Sarah’s expression darkened. These past few days, she’d been trying hard to bury the memories of what happened. The incident with Scarlett had kept her so distracted, she hadn’t even thought about it for days. But now, Mrs. Sanders’s question struck a nerve.“There’s not much to say, Auntie. It’s been so long… and honestly, a lot of it’s a blur now.”“Oh dear, look at me—always bringing up the worst topics. Whether you’ve remembered or not, life still has to go on, right? But… have you gone to visit your dad’s grave yet? Th

Looking at Mrs. Sanders’s fake smile, Sarah felt a wave of irritation—but she still had to respond.“Auntie, I’m feeling much better now. Thanks for checking in. Was there something you came by for today?”No one ever shows up for no reason. Her guard instantly went up.Mrs. Sanders stepped inside like she owned the place and sat right down on the sofa, looking her up and down.“What? Can’t I drop by without a reason? You’re like a daughter to me, and Melvin is my son. I’m always worried about whether you two are eating well, living comfortably. You really should come home more often—your uncle’s always mentioning you.”If someone didn’t know her background, they’d probably fall for this warm, concerned act. She said all the right things, played the part of a caring elder. But Sarah knew better. Her uncle’s concern might be genuine—but Mrs. Sanders? That woman would probably be thrilled if she dropped dead tomorrow. All she ever wanted was the company shares. She’d do anything t

She suddenly paused. “Wait! One question—after he was rescued, did you tell him what happened to Scarlett, or did he bring it up himself?”“He brought it up on his own,” Zachary replied, his expression tightening as he realized something was off too.Without another word, Sarah went straight to the guest room and called him out. She got right to the point. “How did you know something happened to Scarlett?”Steven froze for a second. “I heard about it.”“Don’t joke. No one knows what happened that night better than I do. Aside from the people at the scene, barely anyone even knew she was in danger. You heard it? From who?” she pressed.Zachary was watching him just as closely, making no move to cover for him. “Tell the truth, Steven.”Faced with the two of them, Steven finally lowered his head. “Zach… I knew because I saw it myself. Julian tortured me in every way possible just to force me to cooperate with them. When nothing worked, he handed me a tablet and said he had a surpris

When Sarah first saw Steven that day, she was shocked. His head was bleeding, his entire body was covered in wounds, and yet he still dragged his injured leg all the way there just to check on Scarlett.“Miss Sanders, I’m fine. How’s Scarlett?” Steven asked, his eyes full of worry. He didn’t seem to notice the pain he was in.Sarah pointed toward the guest room on the first floor. “She’s in there, but don’t go in yet. She finally managed to fall asleep. She’s been having nightmares these past few days. You know what happened—it left her with serious trauma. Any sudden noise can trigger the memory of that night.”She paused before adding, “Even in that state, she never forgot about you. The only time she regained consciousness, she kept mumbling your name and begging them to let you go.”The more she spoke, the more Steven’s heart ached.Clutching his chest, his face pale, he said softly, “Miss Sanders, everything that happened—it’s all my fault. I dragged her into this.”“Don’t s
