Chapter 970

Author: Summer Knowles
“Alright. You get some rest too.”

After saying goodnight, the two of them went back to their rooms.

Inside Scarlett’s room, her eyes flew open. She stared around in terror, the thumping beat of music echoing in her head—so loud it was almost deafening. Mixed into the rhythm were voices. Male voices.

“No crying. Shut up and take it.”

“Quiet! You hear me? We’re treating you nice—what are you crying for?”

“Still thinking about that boyfriend of yours, huh? That romantic crap again? Forget him. Why don’t you focus on making us happy first?”

“How many times do I have to tell you to shut up?!”

The taunts, the sickening breathing, and that hand—clamping down over her mouth so she couldn’t make a sound.

Neon lights flashing in every color, strangers walking back and forth right outside the door. Not one of them stopped. Not one tried to help her.

The voices hadn’t stopped echoing in her head for days now. They were there even when she slept—mixed with the blaring music and shouting.

Vivian had wandered here without even realizing it after leaving the hospital. She was clearly lost in thought. Her eyes were pointed straight ahead, but her mind was miles away.Up ahead, a group of girls stood chatting and laughing. One of them held a coffee, and they were completely absorbed in their conversation.Suddenly, a loud car horn blared nearby. Startled, the girls all instinctively stepped back. One of them bumped right into Vivian, and her coffee slipped from her hand, splashing across the ground. Some even hit another girl standing nearby. The girl stared down at her skirt, now stained with brown liquid. After a stunned pause, she let out a furious scream. “This is the brand-new Knowles dress I just bought!”The girl who had dropped the coffee panicked immediately. She pulled out tissues from her bag and rushed over, trying to wipe the stain from her skirt, apologizing nonstop. “I’m so sorry, Kimberly. I didn’t mean to.”The rest of the group stood frozen, clearly

Mrs. Sanders watched Sarah’s frantic departure with a calm expression. She poured herself another cup of tea and took a leisurely sip. When Melvin got home and saw that Sarah wasn’t around, he found his mother sprawled comfortably on the couch, sorting through a stack of photos. The moment he saw those photos, his head started to ache. Lately, Mrs. Sanders had been obsessed with setting him up on blind dates—she had brought it up at least a dozen times.“Mom, where’s Sarah?”Mrs. Sanders looked unbothered. “She’s a grown woman. You think I’m supposed to keep track of her every second? She wasn’t here when I arrived. I’ve no idea where she went.”“That’s odd,” Melvin muttered.Given how down Sarah had been lately, she shouldn’t have gone far. He glanced back at his mother, suspicion growing in his chest. Something about this didn’t feel right.Mrs. Sanders had already lost her patience over anything involving Sarah. She jumped to her feet, fuming, and slammed a few photos onto th

Sarah shook her head hard. “That’s not true!”“Oh? Did I say anything wrong?” Mrs. Sanders replied lightly. “Sasa, if you’d never met Zachary, none of this would’ve happened, right? And I don’t mean that to blame you—just stating a fact. Your father adored you. I just feel bad for your family, that’s all.”“I don’t want to talk about my dad,” Sarah said, her face pale with anger. But Mrs. Sanders didn’t stop. In fact, she smiled even brighter.“Sasa, you really don’t handle stress well. Haven’t you been through worse? I’m only bringing up your dad because I want you to remember how much he loved you. Don’t throw that away for some man. I still remember when you were little and got sick. He stayed by your side day and night, didn’t even care about the company. Your uncle and I had to step in and help because he was run ragged.”Her words were slow, deliberate.Sarah looked up and stared her down. “So what you’re really saying is, I’m to blame for my dad’s death?”Mrs. Sanders imm

Sarah lowered her gaze. She knew this day would come the moment she moved in.Mrs. Sanders didn’t wait for a response and kept talking.“Of course, that little townhouse your parents left behind isn’t bad either. Now that they’re both gone, it’s a nice space for just one person. How about I go with you in a few days and help you get it tidied up?”Sarah couldn’t hold it in anymore. She looked up and fixed Mrs. Sanders with a cold stare.“So you came all this way just to remind me to get the hell out of here?”“Now, now—listen to yourself. What kind of tone is that? We’re family. Why would I ever want to kick you out?” Mrs. Sanders leaned back against the couch and took a sip of tea. “But let’s be real, even if the words sound harsh, the logic’s not wrong. When your cousin gets married, how could you two keep living under the same roof?”Sarah let out a cold laugh.“Auntie, it’s just the two of us in this house. You don’t have to pretend anymore. Don’t think I’ve forgotten what hap

Sure enough, right after commenting on the girl in the first photo, Mrs. Sanders quickly changed the subject.“By the way, I heard from your cousin that after the car accident, your memory came back. So… you remember everything now? Three years ago, right after your father passed, you suddenly announced you were marrying James. We were all shocked you made that choice. But as your aunt, I just wanted to ask—what really happened when you went missing back then?”Sarah’s expression darkened. These past few days, she’d been trying hard to bury the memories of what happened. The incident with Scarlett had kept her so distracted, she hadn’t even thought about it for days. But now, Mrs. Sanders’s question struck a nerve.“There’s not much to say, Auntie. It’s been so long… and honestly, a lot of it’s a blur now.”“Oh dear, look at me—always bringing up the worst topics. Whether you’ve remembered or not, life still has to go on, right? But… have you gone to visit your dad’s grave yet? Th

Looking at Mrs. Sanders’s fake smile, Sarah felt a wave of irritation—but she still had to respond.“Auntie, I’m feeling much better now. Thanks for checking in. Was there something you came by for today?”No one ever shows up for no reason. Her guard instantly went up.Mrs. Sanders stepped inside like she owned the place and sat right down on the sofa, looking her up and down.“What? Can’t I drop by without a reason? You’re like a daughter to me, and Melvin is my son. I’m always worried about whether you two are eating well, living comfortably. You really should come home more often—your uncle’s always mentioning you.”If someone didn’t know her background, they’d probably fall for this warm, concerned act. She said all the right things, played the part of a caring elder. But Sarah knew better. Her uncle’s concern might be genuine—but Mrs. Sanders? That woman would probably be thrilled if she dropped dead tomorrow. All she ever wanted was the company shares. She’d do anything t
