Chapter 1

When I didn’t take the check, Yvonne Foster urged, “Hurry up and take it.”

I pulled my hand back. “I thought about it. Taking someone else’s money for no reason doesn’t feel right.”

The expression on Yvonne’s face stiffened for a second before she forced out another smile. “Is it not enough? I’ll give you another two hundred thousand. Leave right now.”

I stood up and opened the door. “You’re not welcome in my home. Please leave.”

The next second, I heard Yvonne’s furious inner thoughts through gritted teeth.

[What the hell is wrong with this bitch? Don’t tell me she thinks four hundred thousand still isn’t enough? Poor girls really are greedy!]

[Whatever. Sooner or later, she’ll spit every cent back out.]

She looked at me with disdain. “Name your price. How much do you want?”

I rejected her coldly. “No matter how much you offer, I won’t take it.”

Yvonne’s face flushed red with anger. “Don’t be so ungrateful. Once the Carters come looking for you, you’ll be dead. I’m doing this for your own good!”

For my own good? More like she wanted me dead so she could take my place and marry Joshua.

I had just opened my mouth to speak when hurried footsteps echoed from the staircase.

A moment later, dozens of bodyguards appeared before me in perfect formation.

Good lord. I’d only ever seen scenes like this in dramas.

The middle-aged man leading them looked at me and said, “Miss Shaw, Mr. Carter would like to see you. Please come with us.”

Before I could answer, Yvonne leaned close to my ear and whispered, “Don’t go. If you do, you’ll never come back.”

The memory of my miserable death in my previous life sent a chill through my body. There was no way I’d be stupid enough to trust her again.

I turned to the man and said, “I’ll go with you.”

Yvonne lunged at me like she’d gone mad, trying to grab my arm, but I dodged her immediately. “I don’t know you. Please stop interfering in my business.”

Then I left with them.

Yvonne stamped her feet in jealousy behind me.

I was brought to a luxurious mansion. My family had always been poor, and I’d never seen much of the world growing up. Even after stepping into the grand, extravagant living room, my mind was still spinning.

Joshua Carter sat on the sofa in a dark suit, his neatly styled short hair immaculate. The pressure he gave off was overwhelming.

He lifted his eyes to look at me, his expression indifferent.

“The person who entered my room last night… was that you?”

I nodded hard. “It was me.”

In my previous life, I took Yvonne’s check and lied to Joshua, denying everything.

Yvonne stepped forward and claimed she was the one who entered his room. Joshua believed her completely, and not long after, the two of them got married.

Meanwhile, I died consumed by bitterness and regret.

Joshua looked at me and said, “What happened last night was an accident, but I’ll take responsibility for it. We’ll hold the wedding in a month.”

Yvonne had just walked in when she heard those words, and she nearly exploded with rage.

But I had no time to care about her. My mind was filled with one thought only.

Joshua really was going to marry me.

The thoughts I heard were real.

In my previous life, I was killed by Yvonne before I even had the chance to learn the truth.

This time, I was going to marry Joshua and become the wife of one of Kingsford’s wealthiest men.

Yvonne desperately shot me warning looks, trying to get me to refuse Joshua.

Yvonne’s face went pale instantly as panic flashed across her features. She hurriedly tried to explain herself.“Joshua, none of what you heard is true. Louisa’s trying to frame me.”“Mrs. Carter Sr., you’ve watched me grow up. I can’t even bear to step on an ant. There’s no way I’d ever try to kill someone.”I calmly pulled out my phone and played the recording.Every single word she just said was captured clearly. The color drained from Yvonne’s face in an instant. Like she’d gone completely mad, she lunged toward me, trying to snatch away my phone.“Louisa, you bitch! How dare you set me up!”I flinched in shock, but before she could even touch me, Joshua stepped in front of me and stopped her.His voice turned ice-cold. “Yvonne, even now, you still refuse to admit what you’ve done? I never imagined you were capable of being this vicious.”Yvonne burst into tears and grabbed onto Joshua’s arm.“It’s not like that. I only did it because I love you so much. I didn’t mean for things to

It was Joshua. Why was he here? The man in black missed his first strike, but he refused to give up and lunged toward us again with the knife. My mind went completely blank. Instinctively, I threw myself in front of Joshua.“Watch out!”A sharp pain tore through my shoulder, and my face instantly twisted in agony.Joshua kicked the attacker away with one brutal motion. The second the man crashed onto the ground, the bodyguards rushing in pinned him down immediately.“Sorry, Mr. Carter. We were late.”Joshua ignored them completely and looked at me nervously. “How bad is it?”His hand touched the wetness soaking through my shoulder. The moment I saw the blood, my vision went black from shock. Before losing consciousness, I felt Joshua panic as he scooped me into his arms.At the hospital, the doctor stitched and bandaged my wound before explaining that fortunately, no vital areas had been injured. As long as I stayed hospitalized and rested for a while, I would recover fully. The momen

“Stop right there.”Joshua’s voice halted me in my tracks. He walked over and lowered his gaze to the red handprint on my face. His fingers lightly brushed against it. “Does it hurt?”I froze for a moment.Yvonne immediately demanded angrily, “Joshua, don’t you see that my face is hurt too? Why are you only worried about her?”Joshua glanced at her indifferently. “If you hadn’t hit her first, would she have hit you back?”Yvonne was instantly speechless. So, he had seen everything just now?Joshua took my hand. “Come with me. I’ll get you treated.”He led me downstairs while Yvonne’s furious thoughts echoed behind us.[Louisa, just you wait. I’ll never let you off.]It was obvious Yvonne wouldn’t give up so easily, but for the next several days, she made no new moves. All I could do was stay cautious and wait. That evening, the dining table was unusually quiet.Rachel was the first to speak. “Actually, proving whether Louisa was the woman that night is very simple.”Joshua looked at he

Yvonne smiled as she wrapped herself around Joshua’s arm. “You should take back the one million you transferred to her earlier too. We can’t just let her keep it.”Joshua pulled his arm away and replied flatly, “There’s no need.”The moment I returned to the villa, I started packing my things.Since Joshua chose to believe Yvonne, I had no intention of staying behind just to humiliate myself further.Rachel hurried into the room. The second she saw me folding clothes into my suitcase, she immediately stopped me.“Louisa, what are you doing?”“I’m leaving.”Rachel became so anxious she practically started pacing. “Louisa, don’t go.”“Joshua’s just being an idiot right now. He can’t even figure out his own feelings. If he drives my future daughter-in-law away, I’m not letting him off the hook!”I was genuinely grateful to Rachel. Ever since I moved into the Carter residence, she had always treated me kindly. She never acted arrogant or looked down on me like some wealthy socialite.Maybe

She pulled out a stack of photos stamped with timestamps. “These are all proof. At the time, she was out fooling around with a bunch of men at a bar. There’s no way she could’ve been at the hotel.”In the photos, several different men had their arms wrapped around me while kissing me intimately.Yvonne continued loudly, “And Louisa’s filthy to begin with. Ever since high school, she’s been involved with different guys, her private life is a complete mess, and she’s even had an abortion before. A woman like that doesn’t deserve to marry you!”The entire venue erupted into chaos.Joshua’s face darkened instantly as he lifted his eyes to look at me.All around us, the guests began whispering among themselves.“She looks so sweet and innocent, but turns out she’s nothing like that behind the scenes.”“She’s been messing around with men since she was young? That’s disgusting. Forget marrying Mr. Carter, even my son wouldn’t want someone like her.”“Exactly. Women like this only know how to

Rachel noticed the surprise in Joshua’s eyes as well. Eager to spoil a grandchild as soon as possible, she kept trying to push us together. “Louisa, why don’t you sleep in Joshua’s room tonight?”Joshua refused coldly, “No.”I quietly let out a sigh of relief. After all, we weren’t officially married yet.Ever since Joshua returned, Yvonne had been visiting the Carter residence constantly. Every single time, I could hear the venomous thoughts in her head.[A worthless poor girl actually thinks she can marry into the Carter family? She really has a death wish.][The only person who can marry Joshua is me!]I didn’t know what Yvonne was planning, but the uneasiness in my chest kept growing, leaving me constantly on guard. That afternoon, the butler brought me an evening gown and informed me that I would be accompanying Joshua to a banquet that night. As night fell, the ballroom glittered with champagne glasses and flashing lights as I arrived holding onto Joshua’s arm.A crowd quickly g
