Chapter 4

Author: Codfish
Lucas was left standing there, like he was a part of the wallpaper. At last, he couldn't take it anymore and rushed over, his eyes bloodshot.

"Natania!"

My bodyguards were like an impenetrable wall, easily stopping him from getting any closer.

Jeremy shot him a disdainful glance before turning to me and purposely asking, "Tania, who is this?"

Picking up my napkin, I dabbed at my mouth before answering, my smile faint. "An unimportant part of my past."

Hearing that, Lucas instantly flushed bright red.

All the humiliation he had suffered thus far had Lucas deciding to go all-in at work. He placed his only hope on the company's biggest project—Project Skyvault.

For the sake of this project, he spent countless nights burning the midnight oil, all to prepare what he thought was the perfect proposal. The whole time, he daydreamed about how he would be able to make a comeback if he succeeded in nabbing this project, thereby leaving behind the trauma I had caused him.

The company wasted no time calling a highest-level all-hands meeting. There was only one item on the agenda—to bring in a new strategic investor for Project Skyvault. This investor would acquire a 30% stake in the company and appoint a new chairman.

Before the meeting, the CEO specifically asked Lucas to come to his office. Patting Lucas' shoulder, he said, "Lucas, this is your last chance. This new investor has a mysterious background but comes with terrifyingly formidable resources. As long as your proposal wins them over, forget about the mess you caused previously, I guarantee that you'll be promoted straight to the position of deputy CEO!"

The flames of hope once again ignited in Lucas' eyes. Overcome with gratitude, he clasped the CEO's hand tightly, as though he were clutching at his last lifeline.

Little did he know, this CEO had already met me countless times, each time acting like a simpering fool. What was even more hilarious was that the night before the meeting, I received an email from Winona.

The attached file was none other than the core proposal Lucas had painstakingly drafted over countless sleepless nights.

In the accompanying message, Winona was all kinds of sycophantic as she claimed to have looked up to us, the "new investor", for a very long time now. She even declared her willingness to do anything we asked of her.

Clearly, she thought Lucas' time was over and was trying to sell what was left of his worth to find herself a new backer.

Unfortunately for her, the person she was trying so hard to curry favor with was none other than me.

The door to the conference room was pushed open before Caleb, who had accompanied me to the door, made an inviting gesture inside.

"Go on, my dear chairman. Show them who's the real boss here."

Under everyone's expectant gazes, the CEO jogged over and respectfully held the door open for me, his body tilted sideways so that I could enter.

Clad in a tailored white suit, I stepped inside and headed straight to the seat at the head of the table, which symbolized the highest authority.

Clearing his throat, the CEO then introduced me, "Everyone, this is our one and only investor in Project Skyvault, and she also happens to be our newly-appointed chairman—Ms. Natania Simmon!"

Lucas' eyes widened in shock as the excitement, hope, and ambition on his face froze, then slowly disintegrated. His mind was blank, and all he could do was stare at me numbly.

The woman who had once cooked and cleaned for him—the one he had mocked as incapable of living without him—now sat in the most powerful seat in the room, looking down at him with a cold, distant gaze.

The proposal he was clutching, the stack of papers he had pinned all of his hopes on, dropped to the floor with a soft thump and scattered.

I couldn't even be bothered to glance at him. Instead, I turned to the CEO. I then spoke in a voice that wasn't loud but still carried clearly across the entire conference room.

"Before we start this meeting, I would like to handle one small matter. I heard that the Sales Director, Lucas Gardner, embezzled the company's funds to pay for one Ms. Langdon's high expenses. Besides that, he's suspected of leaking core company secrets to a third party."

Pausing briefly, I eyed the camera installed in the corner of the room before curving my lips into a smirk.

"Please report this to the police, then start an internal audit, with the legal department following up.

"Now, we can begin the meeting."

Howard likely believed that if I hadn't suddenly stepped in as chairman, he could have kept leeching off the company.Frankly, that was a ridiculous way of thinking. The security guards reacted quickly, letting go of Lucas to stop Howard. However, it was too late. The knife was already far too close, barely three feet away from stabbing into my eye. I could even smell the stench wafting from his unwashed body. It was utterly revolting, as though he hadn't showered in days.At that critical moment, a figure abruptly leaped up from the floor. It was Lucas. He scrambled over and threw his almost skeletal body across mine.A squelch rang out, the sound of something stabbing into flesh.Time seemed to come to a stop as a warm liquid splattered onto my face.Meanwhile, Howard was pinned to the floor by the security guards, who had jumped onto him. Nonetheless, he was still cursing up a storm.Lucas slid down my body, slowly, oh so slowly.I instinctively reached out to grab him, st

When Lucas saw me, he fell to his knees with a thump, his lips trembling."Natania…" he began in a hoarse voice. "Please save my mom. She has a serious illness and desperately needs a surgery that will cost a substantial sum…"A substantial sum, huh? I wondered if the starting funds I had given him years ago for his company counted as a substantial sum.Instead of giving him an answer, I walked over to sit on the couch, daintily crossing my legs.He shuffled toward me, still on his knees, and reached out to touch the hem of my pants. However, he shrank back at the last moment, as though afraid that his filthy hand would stain the expensive fabric."I know what I did was inhumane and that I wronged you in countless ways. You can ask me to do anything, be anything—even a dog—as long as you're willing to lend me the money…"Tears and snot mixed into a disgusting mess on his face. Lucas Gardner, the man who was once filled with spirit and vigor, who once scorned me for being unable t

"Do you not understand what I mean?" My tone became significantly colder. "Throw that out, along with yourself."Immediately, Lucas' face drained of all color. He grabbed the plastic bag, squeezing it so tightly that his knuckles were white, before turning around and jerkily throwing it into the larger black trash bag he held. It was as though he were tossing out that last bit of laughably pitiful hope he had.…The weather grew colder over the next few days, and I ended up catching a slight cold. After coughing a little during a meeting, Jeremy was so anxious that he instantly sent my secretary out to get me some imported lozenges and ginger tea. After the meeting, I had only just returned to my office when I spotted Lucas lingering outside the glass door while clutching a box of cold medicine. He didn't dare knock on the door, so he simply stood there and gazed through the glass at me with a pleading expression.Furrowing my brows, I pressed the button for my intercom."Tell t

Over the phone, Howard was still going on."Guess what Lucas' response to that was? He stared at the magazine cover so intently, with his eyes all red. His hands also started shaking as badly as a Parkinson's patient! In the end, he didn't even make a peep, simply left with the magazine we had stomped all over, looking like an abandoned dog."Anyway, Mr. Luther, don't you worry. I've already warned him not to bother Ms. Simmon, or I'll be the first to hunt him down!"After Jeremy ended the call, the amusement that had been on his face from our earlier banter had faded significantly. He then turned to face me, his expression somewhat complicated."Tania…"He rarely addressed me like that in the company."It's all in the past now," I said calmly, tossing the magazine in the trash.Jeremy nodded, not saying another word. When it was time to get off of work, Jeremy and I entered the elevator together. In one corner of the elevator stood a man in a janitor's uniform, his head bowed

I suddenly recalled something rather funny."By the way, last time, one of Lucas' buddies, Howard Kinger, told me a secret in an attempt to curry my favor. Apparently, for the incident where Lucas stuck his hand down Winona's pants, it wasn't actually a real cockroach in her pocket, but a toy she had put in herself. It was all an act to gross me out."I still remember how Lucas had praised her at the time for not making a fuss and being like a real man. His lousy friends had been beyond delighted."I laughed softly, both at the circus of clowns that were Lucas and his friends, and at myself for being so blinded by my love back then. After hanging up, I tossed all these complicated emotions to the back of my mind. However, a few days later, a letter from prison abruptly appeared on my desk. There was no sender name, and the address had been written in a crooked manner that screamed of despair.I sliced the envelope open with a letter knife, but instead of a long letter crammed fu

After the visit, my lawyer reported to me, "Mr. Gardner lost his mind when he saw the compensation amount. He refuses to believe it, repeatedly saying that you'll definitely visit him, that you'll forgive him."I felt nothing but amusement when I heard this. The lawyer paused briefly before adding, "By the way, Ms. Winona Langdon has pinned all responsibility and blame on him in her bid to absolve herself of all crimes. She provided the police with substantial evidence to prove that she had been a victim all along and that she had been kept in the dark about things. She even forged chat records that showed he had been manipulating and gaslighting her for years."Not a single emotion stirred in me as I listened to his report.Everyone had turned their backs on Lucas, even those he held most dear, and he had lost everything. I could already imagine the sheer despair on Lucas' face when he heard all this in the detention center. How wonderful. This was only what he deserved.Endin
