Chapter 2

Author: Sinclair
The other ring was set with a sapphire. A year ago, Alex had bought it for me at an auction during the Moretti family's charity gala.

The charity gala was the most respectable face the Moretti family showed the world. Reporters saw only the hotel foundation, the veterans' charities, and the community clinic renovations. They never saw the rooms behind the ballroom, the ones reserved for Moretti advisors, lawyers, and the men who ran the family's territory.

All I'd done that night was look at the sapphire on display a few too many times.

The auctioneer kept calling out bids, and I never raised my paddle. The people around us were still speculating about which private collection the stone had come from when Alex raised his paddle.

The price kept climbing.

I tugged at his sleeve and lowered my voice. "Forget it. I don't like it that much."

He turned his head to look at me. "You've looked at it seven times since we walked in."

I blinked at him. "You counted?"

"I'm not that bored."

Then he raised his paddle again.

When the gavel finally came down, all eyes in the room turned toward us. An older woman in the front row, one of his late mother's closest friends, was among the few people who dared tease Alex to his face.

She turned around and smiled at me. "I've known him for more than 20 years, and this is the first time I've seen him spoil a woman like this."

My ears went hot.

But it was everyone else's reaction that really got to me. These weren't ordinary businessmen. They ran Moretti hotels and docks. Some had been sitting at the family's table since Alex's father was in charge. They knew exactly who I was—and who I wasn't. Yet when Alex gave me that ring in front of them, no one so much as blinked. Their silence told me more than sweet words ever could—and I believed it.

Alex didn't explain. He just slid the velvet box over to me. "If you like it, keep it."

That night, I held on to the box, and my heart wouldn't stop racing.

Back at the hotel, I blocked the bathroom doorway and asked him, "Alex, when are you going to propose to me?"

He stopped in the middle of undoing his cufflinks.

I still remember the way his faint smile faded when I asked.

"Nora, isn't what we have good enough?"

Of course I understood.

Back then, I just couldn't bear to let him go, so I chose to pretend I hadn't.

After that, the sapphire ring stayed locked in the safe in my apartment. I never wore it once.

Because it felt too much like a promise.

But Alex had never actually said the words.

Now there was another ring on my bed. Claire's engagement ring. Left behind with me simply because she didn't like it.

I sat on the edge of the bed until nearly dawn. Then I closed the box.

In the morning, I dragged my suitcase out of the estate.

The black sedan was already waiting at the bottom of the steps.

Alex sat in the back. The seat beside him was empty.

The window rolled down. "Get in."

I didn't delete that email. And I didn't avoid using it just because it came from Alex.If the studio wanted to break into the big hotel chains, I wasn't going to hurt the team's chances just to protect my pride. We followed the normal process. We reached out, submitted our bid, and revised our proposal. No one from the Moretti family put in a good word for us, and Alex's name didn't open any doors.During the bidding process, the chain sent our proposal back twice, questioning whether our studio was big enough to handle the work. The second time, we were up past midnight revising it when my business partner asked if I wanted to call Alex. I shook my head. It wasn't because his connections were dirty or because I had something to prove. This time, I knew exactly what I needed: public information, not someone opening doors for me.Whether we landed the contract or not still came down to our proposal. All that email had done was save us some unnecessary detours. In the end, all I wrote b

My first year after leaving New York, I worked at an independent hotel consulting firm in Boston. The second year, I moved back to Maine and opened a small studio with a friend.Of course, it wasn't smooth sailing the whole way.For a while, we could barely make rent. For three weeks straight, I slept four hours a night and made a six-hour round trip for a contract with a small inn.But every decision was mine.Even when I got it wrong, I didn't have to wait for someone else to clean up after me.When Alex appeared in the doorway of my studio, I looked at him for a long time. He'd lost some weight, and the fatigue showed around his eyes. What surprised me most was that he hadn't brought a crowd of his men with him.A black car was parked across the street with the driver waiting inside. Two years ago, he wouldn't have come to see me like this. Back then, before Alex entered an unfamiliar place, someone always checked the exits, the back door, and the cars outside. He rarely went anywhe

Before I left New York, I spent an entire afternoon going through my apartment.Alex had given me a lot of things over the years.Jewelry, watches, bags, artwork. The spare key to this apartment. And the private keycard that took me straight up to the top floor at Moretti headquarters. In the past, so many of our fights had ended with a gift.I'd genuinely liked those things. When I got them, I'd really been happy.I wasn't going to suddenly pretend I'd never loved money just because I was leaving him.The check from seven years ago had saved me.I wasn't giving back the cashier's check he'd left on the nightstand the night of my birthday, either. That money had solved real problems. I didn't need to wipe out every bit of help he'd given me just to prove I was above it all. What I was sending back was the rest.Every time he gave me one of those things, I swallowed the questions I'd meant to ask. They were supposed to be gifts. Somewhere along the way, they'd become a way to end every

When I woke up again, I was in the private hospital the Moretti family always used.My leg wasn't broken, just badly bruised, and I'd breathed in a lot of smoke. The doctor said the firefighters had found me on their second sweep. If they'd found me any later, it would've been much worse. My phone was on the nightstand. There were dozens of missed calls on the screen. Most of them were from Alex.I didn't call back.It wasn't until a coworker came to visit that I found out what had happened after the attack. The attackers belonged to a small gang the Morettis had driven out of the port district years ago. Officially, police were investigating the incident as a bombing and shooting. Meanwhile, the Moretti family had turned the hotel's security footage, vehicle records, and entry logs over to their lawyers.Claire had hurt her ankle, and her room was on the same floor. When someone went to see her, they casually asked about me. "Wasn't Nora with you that day? How's she doing?"Alex was s

At first, I didn't want to go.Claire's second text arrived right after the first. "If you don't come, I can always just show up at your office."I didn't want to cause a scene at the office during my last few days there, so I had no choice but to go.The restaurant was on the top floor of a Moretti hotel in Manhattan. As far as the public knew, it was just a members-only restaurant. But Moretti security was stationed downstairs around the clock.Claire was already there. The moment I sat down, she said, "I hear you quit.""Yes.""That's for the best."She picked up her coffee. "I came here today for one reason. Once you leave New York, don't contact Alex again. Not for work, not through friends, and not because of your history."I looked at her for a few seconds. "You two are getting married. Why are you so afraid I'll contact him?"Her expression changed. "I'm not scared.""Then why are you here?""Nora, you've been with him all these years. You should know exactly where you stand. I

The same day Alex found out I'd quit, he had someone call me up to his office on the top floor.Once the door was shut, he pushed my resignation record across the desk at me."When did you decide this?"I glanced at the date. "Last week.""Why didn't you tell me?""Do I need to tell you when I quit?"His jaw tightened. "Where are you going?""Nothing's final yet.""Boston?"I looked up.Clearly, he'd already had someone look into my handover and interview schedule."That's none of your business.""Nora." He stood up, his voice lower than usual. "You're walking away from Moretti over the North Shore?""It's not just the North Shore.""Claire, then?""Not that either.""Then is it about the ring last night?"Suddenly, I was too tired to even argue."When I turned in my resignation, I hadn't gone on that blind date yet, and you hadn't come to get the ring."Alex looked caught off guard for a moment.I pointed at the date. "Look closely. I turned it in the day after you took the North Shor
