Chapter 3

Author: Sinclair
I didn't move. "I'll get back to New York on my own."

"The other cars all left last night." Alex glanced at my suitcase. "It's more than a two-hour drive back to the city from here."

I got in.

There was an unsweetened latte in the cup holder.

Whenever we drove back to New York together after an out-of-town trip, he had the driver get one for me. He'd seen me frown at sweetened coffee once. After that, no one ever got my order wrong again.

I stared at the coffee and didn't touch it.

Alex glanced at it. "Stomach bothering you?"

"No."

"Then why aren't you drinking it?"

"I just don't feel like it anymore."

He didn't ask anything else.

Once we hit the highway, neither of us said anything for a long time. The driver and bodyguard sat up front, both pretending they couldn't hear us.

We were almost back in New York when I finally asked, "Alex, in all these years, did you ever think of me as your girlfriend?"

He kept looking out the window. "What kind of girlfriend do you mean?"

I hesitated. "The normal kind. Where people know we're together. Where we meet each other's friends and actually talk about a future. Not just hotel rooms and business trips and pretending we don't exist outside of them."

Alex turned away from the window. "We never agreed to that in the first place."

"So?"

"So I figured we both knew exactly what this was. Something private. Just sex. I'm addicted to your body. That's why I've never wanted anyone else. I only want to fuck you." His voice was low and seductive, the kind of voice that could make poison sound sweet.

A private arrangement.

With one phrase, five years were wiped clean.

"Then why did you always say keeping us secret was for my protection?"

"I was protecting you."

"But protecting me has nothing to do with what we are to each other, does it?"

He didn't deny it.

I turned to look out the window.

All this time, I'd mistaken his secrecy for proof that I mattered to him. In reality, keeping me hidden had simply been easier for him.

Once we were in Manhattan, the car stopped three blocks from Moretti headquarters, like always.

On paper, the building housed the Moretti family's hotel and shipping businesses. The top floor was where the family handled its real business. In five years, he'd never once dropped me at the front door—not even when we'd spent the night together and ridden back in the same car the next morning.

I used to think that was considerate of him.

Today, as I got out, those three blocks felt endless for the first time.

Before I could push the door open, he stopped me. "Nora."

I looked back.

He held out the coffee. "Take this."

"No, thanks."

His brow furrowed slightly.

I shut the car door and walked the rest of the way alone.

When I got to the office, I went to the break room to get some water. A few coworkers were huddled together, talking.

"Did you see what happened this morning? Mr. Moretti's car pulled right up to the front door."

"I did. Ms. Valenti got out of the front passenger seat, and there were two more cars behind it."

"So the engagement is real. She'll have a seat at the table now."

The cup in my hand was already full. Hot water spilled over the rim and onto the back of my hand.

It scalded me, and I jerked my hand back.

Someone nearby turned around. "Nora, are you okay?"

"I'm fine."

I held my hand under cold running water.

They were still talking about what it meant that Claire had gotten out at the front door.

I looked down.

Half an hour earlier, I'd gotten out of that same car.

Three blocks away.

I didn't delete that email. And I didn't avoid using it just because it came from Alex.If the studio wanted to break into the big hotel chains, I wasn't going to hurt the team's chances just to protect my pride. We followed the normal process. We reached out, submitted our bid, and revised our proposal. No one from the Moretti family put in a good word for us, and Alex's name didn't open any doors.During the bidding process, the chain sent our proposal back twice, questioning whether our studio was big enough to handle the work. The second time, we were up past midnight revising it when my business partner asked if I wanted to call Alex. I shook my head. It wasn't because his connections were dirty or because I had something to prove. This time, I knew exactly what I needed: public information, not someone opening doors for me.Whether we landed the contract or not still came down to our proposal. All that email had done was save us some unnecessary detours. In the end, all I wrote b

My first year after leaving New York, I worked at an independent hotel consulting firm in Boston. The second year, I moved back to Maine and opened a small studio with a friend.Of course, it wasn't smooth sailing the whole way.For a while, we could barely make rent. For three weeks straight, I slept four hours a night and made a six-hour round trip for a contract with a small inn.But every decision was mine.Even when I got it wrong, I didn't have to wait for someone else to clean up after me.When Alex appeared in the doorway of my studio, I looked at him for a long time. He'd lost some weight, and the fatigue showed around his eyes. What surprised me most was that he hadn't brought a crowd of his men with him.A black car was parked across the street with the driver waiting inside. Two years ago, he wouldn't have come to see me like this. Back then, before Alex entered an unfamiliar place, someone always checked the exits, the back door, and the cars outside. He rarely went anywhe

Before I left New York, I spent an entire afternoon going through my apartment.Alex had given me a lot of things over the years.Jewelry, watches, bags, artwork. The spare key to this apartment. And the private keycard that took me straight up to the top floor at Moretti headquarters. In the past, so many of our fights had ended with a gift.I'd genuinely liked those things. When I got them, I'd really been happy.I wasn't going to suddenly pretend I'd never loved money just because I was leaving him.The check from seven years ago had saved me.I wasn't giving back the cashier's check he'd left on the nightstand the night of my birthday, either. That money had solved real problems. I didn't need to wipe out every bit of help he'd given me just to prove I was above it all. What I was sending back was the rest.Every time he gave me one of those things, I swallowed the questions I'd meant to ask. They were supposed to be gifts. Somewhere along the way, they'd become a way to end every

When I woke up again, I was in the private hospital the Moretti family always used.My leg wasn't broken, just badly bruised, and I'd breathed in a lot of smoke. The doctor said the firefighters had found me on their second sweep. If they'd found me any later, it would've been much worse. My phone was on the nightstand. There were dozens of missed calls on the screen. Most of them were from Alex.I didn't call back.It wasn't until a coworker came to visit that I found out what had happened after the attack. The attackers belonged to a small gang the Morettis had driven out of the port district years ago. Officially, police were investigating the incident as a bombing and shooting. Meanwhile, the Moretti family had turned the hotel's security footage, vehicle records, and entry logs over to their lawyers.Claire had hurt her ankle, and her room was on the same floor. When someone went to see her, they casually asked about me. "Wasn't Nora with you that day? How's she doing?"Alex was s

At first, I didn't want to go.Claire's second text arrived right after the first. "If you don't come, I can always just show up at your office."I didn't want to cause a scene at the office during my last few days there, so I had no choice but to go.The restaurant was on the top floor of a Moretti hotel in Manhattan. As far as the public knew, it was just a members-only restaurant. But Moretti security was stationed downstairs around the clock.Claire was already there. The moment I sat down, she said, "I hear you quit.""Yes.""That's for the best."She picked up her coffee. "I came here today for one reason. Once you leave New York, don't contact Alex again. Not for work, not through friends, and not because of your history."I looked at her for a few seconds. "You two are getting married. Why are you so afraid I'll contact him?"Her expression changed. "I'm not scared.""Then why are you here?""Nora, you've been with him all these years. You should know exactly where you stand. I

The same day Alex found out I'd quit, he had someone call me up to his office on the top floor.Once the door was shut, he pushed my resignation record across the desk at me."When did you decide this?"I glanced at the date. "Last week.""Why didn't you tell me?""Do I need to tell you when I quit?"His jaw tightened. "Where are you going?""Nothing's final yet.""Boston?"I looked up.Clearly, he'd already had someone look into my handover and interview schedule."That's none of your business.""Nora." He stood up, his voice lower than usual. "You're walking away from Moretti over the North Shore?""It's not just the North Shore.""Claire, then?""Not that either.""Then is it about the ring last night?"Suddenly, I was too tired to even argue."When I turned in my resignation, I hadn't gone on that blind date yet, and you hadn't come to get the ring."Alex looked caught off guard for a moment.I pointed at the date. "Look closely. I turned it in the day after you took the North Shor
