Chapter 4

Author: Sinclair
At ten that morning, the head of HR walked into our department with a woman I'd never seen before.

"Can I have everyone's attention for a second?"

People throughout the office looked up.

"This is Claire Valenti. She'll be representing the Valenti family on the Moretti North Shore project and overseeing the hotels and clubs jointly owned by both families."

I recognized her the moment I saw her.

Years ago, I'd found her photo tucked deep inside Alex's old wallet. She'd been younger then, standing by the ocean with her arm linked through Alex's.

That was the first time I ever fought with Alex over another woman.

He'd gone cold because I'd gone through his wallet without asking. I'd fought back tears as I asked why he still kept her photo after they'd been apart for so long.

In the end, he was the one who backed down.

"That's in the past."

He tossed the wallet onto the table and reached over to wipe the tears from my face. "Don't cry over this."

After that, I never fought with him about Claire again.

Now here she was, standing in the middle of the Moretti offices like she belonged there. And she did. She wasn't just Alex's fiancée. She was here as the Valenti family's representative.

The two families had been fighting over the New Jersey docks and the North Shore territory for years. Their marriage would put an end to much of that.

There were places in his world I could never reach just by being his favorite.

As soon as her desk was set up and her meetings scheduled, Claire came straight to me.

"Nora?"

"Yes."

"I think this is yours."

She took a brown card holder out of her bag.

My employee ID, my internal access card, and a photo of my grandmother were all inside.

"I found it in the back seat of Alex's car this morning." She set the card holder on my desk, her tone perfectly casual. "Your ID slid out when I picked it up, so I knew it was yours. Sorry. I didn't mean to look."

For a moment, the whole office went quiet.

Some people looked up. Others pretended they hadn't heard.

I reached out and took the card holder. "Thanks."

"No problem."

Claire smiled and turned to talk to someone else.

She didn't ask why my things had ended up in Alex's car. She didn't even hint at anything.

She didn't have to.

Half an hour later, people were already talking about me in the restroom.

"Apparently, after the party at the estate last night, Nora Carter was the only one who didn't come back to the city with everybody else."

"And then her card holder turns up in Mr. Moretti's car."

"No wonder she's landed so many good projects all these years."

"She's good at her job, though."

"So? You can be good at your job and still have someone looking out for you."

When I pushed the door open, the talking stopped dead.

In the mirror, I caught a mix of expressions on their faces.

I washed my hands like I hadn't heard a thing.

Back at my desk, I opened the North Shore project files.

The North Shore was the Morettis' biggest legitimate project in two years: a waterfront hotel, private club, and dockside retail district. On paper, it was an expansion of their hotel business. In reality, the site bordered a port district both families had been fighting to control.

I'd been working on it for more than a year.

From the initial acquisition assessment and hotel positioning to vendor selection, client lists, and the opening plan, I'd had a hand in nearly every part of it.

If the project succeeded, I'd become one of the youngest heads of operations in the Morettis' legitimate businesses.

I'd never worried much about people gossiping about Alex and me. I'd always believed my work spoke for itself. No one could take that away from me.

Now I understood. The second our relationship came to light, everything I'd earned on my own could be reduced to three words: the Don's woman.

Just before the end of the day, Claire walked past my desk. She glanced at the North Shore materials on my screen.

It wasn't just the big budget that made the North Shore project so important. That stretch of waterfront sat between the hotel district the Moretti family controlled and the docks the Valenti family used. The two families had fought over it for years, and neither would be the first to back off. Now that the engagement had been announced, it had been repackaged as a "joint investment." The hotel, club, and dockside retail district were all folded into one master plan. The outside world got to watch the two families shake hands, and all those old clashes were brought to a dignified end.

But that master plan had started with me, alone in a conference room, pulling one all-nighter after another.

"This project's a big deal, huh?"

"Yes."

"I heard you've been on it for over a year."

"About that."

She smiled. "Then I guess we'll be working together a lot."

I watched her walk away and didn't answer.

Starting the next day, the rumors spread faster than I'd ever imagined.

I didn't delete that email. And I didn't avoid using it just because it came from Alex.If the studio wanted to break into the big hotel chains, I wasn't going to hurt the team's chances just to protect my pride. We followed the normal process. We reached out, submitted our bid, and revised our proposal. No one from the Moretti family put in a good word for us, and Alex's name didn't open any doors.During the bidding process, the chain sent our proposal back twice, questioning whether our studio was big enough to handle the work. The second time, we were up past midnight revising it when my business partner asked if I wanted to call Alex. I shook my head. It wasn't because his connections were dirty or because I had something to prove. This time, I knew exactly what I needed: public information, not someone opening doors for me.Whether we landed the contract or not still came down to our proposal. All that email had done was save us some unnecessary detours. In the end, all I wrote b

My first year after leaving New York, I worked at an independent hotel consulting firm in Boston. The second year, I moved back to Maine and opened a small studio with a friend.Of course, it wasn't smooth sailing the whole way.For a while, we could barely make rent. For three weeks straight, I slept four hours a night and made a six-hour round trip for a contract with a small inn.But every decision was mine.Even when I got it wrong, I didn't have to wait for someone else to clean up after me.When Alex appeared in the doorway of my studio, I looked at him for a long time. He'd lost some weight, and the fatigue showed around his eyes. What surprised me most was that he hadn't brought a crowd of his men with him.A black car was parked across the street with the driver waiting inside. Two years ago, he wouldn't have come to see me like this. Back then, before Alex entered an unfamiliar place, someone always checked the exits, the back door, and the cars outside. He rarely went anywhe

Before I left New York, I spent an entire afternoon going through my apartment.Alex had given me a lot of things over the years.Jewelry, watches, bags, artwork. The spare key to this apartment. And the private keycard that took me straight up to the top floor at Moretti headquarters. In the past, so many of our fights had ended with a gift.I'd genuinely liked those things. When I got them, I'd really been happy.I wasn't going to suddenly pretend I'd never loved money just because I was leaving him.The check from seven years ago had saved me.I wasn't giving back the cashier's check he'd left on the nightstand the night of my birthday, either. That money had solved real problems. I didn't need to wipe out every bit of help he'd given me just to prove I was above it all. What I was sending back was the rest.Every time he gave me one of those things, I swallowed the questions I'd meant to ask. They were supposed to be gifts. Somewhere along the way, they'd become a way to end every

When I woke up again, I was in the private hospital the Moretti family always used.My leg wasn't broken, just badly bruised, and I'd breathed in a lot of smoke. The doctor said the firefighters had found me on their second sweep. If they'd found me any later, it would've been much worse. My phone was on the nightstand. There were dozens of missed calls on the screen. Most of them were from Alex.I didn't call back.It wasn't until a coworker came to visit that I found out what had happened after the attack. The attackers belonged to a small gang the Morettis had driven out of the port district years ago. Officially, police were investigating the incident as a bombing and shooting. Meanwhile, the Moretti family had turned the hotel's security footage, vehicle records, and entry logs over to their lawyers.Claire had hurt her ankle, and her room was on the same floor. When someone went to see her, they casually asked about me. "Wasn't Nora with you that day? How's she doing?"Alex was s

At first, I didn't want to go.Claire's second text arrived right after the first. "If you don't come, I can always just show up at your office."I didn't want to cause a scene at the office during my last few days there, so I had no choice but to go.The restaurant was on the top floor of a Moretti hotel in Manhattan. As far as the public knew, it was just a members-only restaurant. But Moretti security was stationed downstairs around the clock.Claire was already there. The moment I sat down, she said, "I hear you quit.""Yes.""That's for the best."She picked up her coffee. "I came here today for one reason. Once you leave New York, don't contact Alex again. Not for work, not through friends, and not because of your history."I looked at her for a few seconds. "You two are getting married. Why are you so afraid I'll contact him?"Her expression changed. "I'm not scared.""Then why are you here?""Nora, you've been with him all these years. You should know exactly where you stand. I

The same day Alex found out I'd quit, he had someone call me up to his office on the top floor.Once the door was shut, he pushed my resignation record across the desk at me."When did you decide this?"I glanced at the date. "Last week.""Why didn't you tell me?""Do I need to tell you when I quit?"His jaw tightened. "Where are you going?""Nothing's final yet.""Boston?"I looked up.Clearly, he'd already had someone look into my handover and interview schedule."That's none of your business.""Nora." He stood up, his voice lower than usual. "You're walking away from Moretti over the North Shore?""It's not just the North Shore.""Claire, then?""Not that either.""Then is it about the ring last night?"Suddenly, I was too tired to even argue."When I turned in my resignation, I hadn't gone on that blind date yet, and you hadn't come to get the ring."Alex looked caught off guard for a moment.I pointed at the date. "Look closely. I turned it in the day after you took the North Shor
