My colleague looked worried.

But before he could say anything, a servant's greeting drifted in from outside the door.

We exchanged a glance.

He quickly grabbed the remaining suits and left, posing as a delivery person from the clothing store.

I walked downstairs. The servant was already gone.

The only person in the living room was a young, vibrant girl fussing over Morrison.

She looked vaguely like me.

My heart sank.

Maybe from the very beginning, Morrison had simply liked my face.

It was never Celine he had loved.

Morrison was drunk but still clutching her hand. "Sarah, don't leave me."

The young woman, Sarah Collins, held a glass of water to his lips and said shyly, "I won't leave you."

Their fingers intertwined, and the way they looked at each other was nothing but devotion.

I couldn't help the ache in my chest.

Four years ago, I had gone undercover as a sales associate at a jewelry store frequented by Luca Bauer, in order to arrest him for his involvement in international human trafficking.

But the day before the arrest, Luca got tipped off and fled.

Instead, Morrison, who had come in to shop, fell in love with me at first sight.

From then on, he pursued me relentlessly.

He showered me with luxury cars and jewelry worth tens of millions and made himself available around the clock.

He even bought twenty-two stars and named them after me, all because I once mentioned I liked the night sky.

Because I happened to be twenty-two.

Morrison pointed at the distant, glittering stars, his slightly boyish face full of sincerity. "Celine, I'm not just playing around. I genuinely want to marry you and be with you forever.

"My love for you is like those stars. It will always shine."

I fought the pull in my heart and turned him down every time, keeping my expression cold.

But Morrison still showed up at my side every day, rain or shine.

Then robbers held up the jewelry store, and Morrison took a bullet meant for me. Doctors fought to save him for two straight days.

After that, I could no longer ignore what I felt for him.

And the Lehman Family had close ties with Luca's family, the Bauers.

So my handler finally agreed to let me be with Morrison, for the sake of the undercover operation.

I could never expose my undercover identity.

Nor could I reveal anything about the mission.

I agreed, overjoyed.

But my handler's voice was conflicted when he warned me, "Celine, guard your heart. Once a man's love is returned, it only fades. It never grows stronger.

"If you truly give him your heart, all you'll get in return is heartbreak."

I was too young then. I believed that a man willing to die for me must love me forever.

Looking back now, my handler's warning had been right all along.

Over the past three months, Morrison had started frequenting clubs.

His intimate photos with strippers, actresses, and college girls had made the news countless times.

But bringing another woman home was a first.

I swallowed the bitterness and grief rising in my chest, took the hangover medicine from the cabinet with practiced ease, and carried it over to Morrison. "Take this. You'll feel better."

Sarah looked up, wary. Her eyes swept over me from head to toe, and she asked, clearly unhappy, "Morrison, who is she? You told me I was your only girlfriend. Why is there another woman in your house?"

I looked at her young face and saw in her eyes the same devotion I once had. I couldn't bear to watch her be deceived.

I sighed, about to tell Sarah that Morrison and I had been living together for four years, that he had lied to her.

But before I could speak, Morrison slowly raised his eyes and scoffed at me. "Babe, give me some credit. A woman that plain, with a body that average? Why would I ever want her?"

My body went rigid. It was like a bucket of ice water had been dumped over my head.

Morrison continued, his voice calm and detached, "She's just my housekeeper."

Morrison charged forward and drove his fist into Klaus's face. "Who the hell are you? What gives you the right to touch her?"Klaus, caught off guard, took the hit square on. His first instinct was to swing back. But I was faster. The crack of my palm across Morrison's face rang through the air. "What do you think you're doing? Why are you hitting my boyfriend?"Morrison went rigid. His heart seized with a bitter, unbearable ache."Celine, you hit me? For him?"He's your boyfriend, so what does that make me? Have you forgotten the days we loved each other? Have you forgotten our promise to get married?"Pain and despair swam in his eyes. His hand trembled as he reached for mine.I didn't hesitate. I stepped back. "I remember. But I also remember you bringing a woman into our bedroom. I remember you in one woman's arms after another. I remember you calling me the housekeeper. I remember you telling everyone that you never loved me."My voice was ice-cold, like a blade splitting his ches

I was granted a two-year leave.I traveled to a remote village and rented a farm.Every morning I fed the sheep and chickens, weeded the garden, and patched up the fences. In the afternoon, I brought whatever eggs we didn't need to the neighbors or sold them at the market in town.In the evenings, I curled up on the couch with the TV on.Life was slow and easy. One day, same as always, I sold my eggs at the produce store in town and picked up some supplies. On the way home, my truck ran out of fuel and got stuck in a mud rut.I called a tow company. With no nearby landmarks to give them, the tow company struggled to pinpoint my location. The sky grew darker.Just when I was running out of ideas, the rumble of a truck engine drifted over from down the road.My spirits lifted. I hurried to the roadside and waved."Hi! My truck's out of fuel. Could I borrow some?"The truck stopped.A young but ruggedly handsome man stepped out. He looked at me with an intent, quiet gaze.I smiled warmly.

The one who loved him swore she didn't.The one who didn't swore she did.Morrison found it absurd. The papers crumpled in his fist with a dry crackle.Under Sarah's terrified gaze, he said, ice in his voice, "You like money that much? Fine. I'll make sure you never earn another cent for the rest of your life. If you beg, no one will dare give you even a penny."You'll spend every day in poverty and fear, until you starve."The bodyguard dragged Sarah away without missing a beat. Her pleas grew fainter. "Morrison, I was wrong. I'll never do it again."Please, let me go..."Morrison didn't spare her another thought. He got in his car and drove straight to the federal field office. He sat in the office of Special Agent in Charge David Michel and leveraged the Lehman Family's influence to demand Celine's whereabouts.Michel had no choice. He ordered Celine's file brought in.Morrison waited, nervous and uneasy. In his head, he rehearsed what he would say. Should he apologize first, or beg

Morrison's mind reeled as if struck by something heavy. When the ringing faded, the memories that jealousy had buried began to surface one by one.Celine couldn't handle spicy food, but she had tried dish after dish just to share a meal with him.Morrison had felt sorry for her. "You don't have to force yourself to do things you don't enjoy for my sake."Celine, face flushed and drenched in sweat, sipped her milk and laughed. "I want to be part of your world. I want to know you just a little bit better."At the time, he had thought: You don't need to come to me. You've already filled every corner of my life....He remembered how, during those hectic days, all he had to do was look over his shoulder, and there she would be, her eyes shining. She would clench her fist and mouth the words: "You've got this. I'll always be here."...He remembered the birthday the year before, when Celine clasped her hands to make a wish."To be with Morrison forever."Not even death could keep us apart."

Morrison's hand hung frozen in midair. A long time passed before he whispered to himself, "I never loved you either."Celine, I never loved you either!"His expression was terrifying, like a beast about to pounce. The guests around him instinctively stepped back.Only Sarah approached slowly and took his hand. "What's wrong?"Morrison's dull gaze drifted to Sarah. After a moment, he pulled her into a tight embrace, lying to himself. "Sarah is the one I love. The only person I've ever truly loved is Sarah."Sarah, I love you..."Sarah, do you love me?"Sarah dropped her gaze, guilt flickering in her eyes. But then she noticed the enormous gemstone ring on her finger and nodded firmly. "Of course I love you."Morrison closed his eyes, forcing back the tears before they could fall.He thought: Celine, it's not like I have to love you.The senior family members asked whether he really intended to marry Sarah.Morrison couldn't keep up the lie.He clutched his head in agony. My handler read the arrest warrant for Luca Bauer aloud. When he finished, he walked over to the heads of the Four Families with a smile and explained the situation.I escorted Luca toward the exit.Morrison cut through the crowd and grabbed my arm."Celine, what is this? Why are you helping the police arrest Luca?"My colleague rushed over to back me up."Mr. Lehman, let go! Or we'll charge you with assaulting a federal agent."Morrison's eyes widened. "You're a cop?"I waved my colleague off and handed Luca to her, then turned to Morrison. My voice was professional and even. "Yes. I'm a federal agent."Luca committed a serious crime years ago. The federal government has been pursuing him ever since. I'm sorry for disrupting your gathering, but cooperating with the government is every taxpayer's duty. I hope you understand."Morrison stared at the unfamiliar look in my eyes, and a broken laugh escaped him.His jaw clenched. "Your people sure have creative methods. Faking a relationshi
