Chapter 2

Author: Helen
Just as the blade was about to come down on my head, tires screeched outside the villa.

Three heavy-duty SUVs crashed through the broken gate and stopped in the courtyard. Several Awakened in Federal Defense Force uniforms jumped out.

I struggled to look up, unable to believe who I saw.

Mark Bennett, Daniel Price, Jonas Reed. They had all been members of my strike team.

The day Old Saint Clair fell, I stayed behind to hold the line. I used my psychic power to clear an escape route for them. Once they were safely inside the armored vehicle, a high-tier Mutant dragged me into the Surge.

Hope rose inside me. I tried to make a sound. If even one of them recognized my signal and stopped Adrian, I might survive.

But Mark barely looked at me before running over to Erin. "You're not hurt, are you? Adrian didn't let you get close to that thing, did he?"

Daniel grinned. "Future Mrs. Walker, leave the dirty work to us. You're the best healer at the fortress. We can't let a monster hurt those hands."

Future Mrs. Walker.

I froze. My heart barely beat anymore, yet those words sent a sharp pain through my chest.

Two weeks. It had only been two weeks.

The soldiers I'd risked my life to save were already treating another woman like she belonged with Adrian.

Erin blushed and tugged at Adrian's sleeve. "Don't say that. Adrian still hasn't forgotten Layla. If she comes back and hears you joking like this, she won't be happy."

Mark scoffed. "She fell into a top-level Surge. There's no way she survived. And even if she did, who cares? All she ever did was make us train, punish us for being late, and put us on night watch. Every day on her team felt like punishment."

"Erin is different." Daniel smiled at her. "Whenever we got hurt, she stayed with us in the infirmary. She never yelled at us or gave us that cold look when we made mistakes. If the captain chooses her, at least he won't get bossed around all day."

My whole body went cold.

I made them train because one mistake on the battlefield could get them killed. I took the most dangerous night shifts and stayed behind to protect them so they could return to the fortress alive.

But to them, I hadn't been protecting them. I'd been controlling them.

Yes, I'd been strict. But I'd also risked my life for them. Now that I was gone, they only remembered me as an annoying captain.

I lowered my head and stared at my rotting hands.

Maybe they were right. I was a hideous zombie now. No one would want to come near me.

I closed my eyes and used my power to summon the low-tier zombies nearby. I didn't want to hurt my former teammates. I only wanted the zombies to block them long enough for me to escape.

I was already in so much pain. I didn't want the man I loved most to be the one who killed me.

Several low-tier zombies stumbled over and formed a barrier between me and Adrian.

Mark sneered. "This freak can control other zombies. Perfect. We'll kill them all together."

He summoned a ball of fire and burned the nearest zombie to ash. Then he pulled out his energy pistol and aimed at my head.

"Adrian, leave this to us. We'll get Erin her gift."

A gunshot rang out. A flaming bullet shot straight toward my forehead.

I jerked aside. It grazed my cheek before flying toward my left hand.

No.

Without thinking, I twisted around and took the hit on my right side. Adrian's ring was on my left hand. Even if my whole body rotted away, I wouldn't let anything happen to it.

Suddenly, Adrian's lightning struck the bullet out of the air. The lightning then slammed into the right side of my body.

Erin cheered. "Adrian, you're amazing!"

I lay face-down, coughing up black blood. The right side of my body was badly burned, and the smell of burning flesh filled the air.

I hid my left hand under my chest, protecting the last thing I had left.

Erin's cries slowly disappeared into the distance.Only Adrian and I were left in the ruins. He was still on one knee, covered in wounds. His broken left arm hung uselessly at his side. His right arm was badly torn from where I'd bitten him. The deep claw marks across his chest were still bleeding. The once-powerful lightning Awakened and heir to the Supreme Commander couldn't even look me in the eye."Layla, I know I was wrong." His voice was barely a whisper. "I can't ask you to forgive me. Just don't send me away. Take away my rank. Put me on trial. Make me a guard or an ordinary soldier. Treat me like a dog if you want. I just want to know that you're alive."I looked at him without saying anything.I saw the wounds he'd suffered to get the serum. I saw his useless left arm and the pain in his eyes.He had risked his life to save mine. But he was also the man who had driven a sword through my heart."Adrian, you brought back the serum and saved my life. I won't forget that."Hope a

The rotten flesh fell away from my face and body. The gray-blue marks slowly disappeared, and my black claws returned to normal. I took a deep breath of cold, fresh air.I looked down at my human hands and slowly breathed in.I was alive.I was stronger than before. The psychic power I'd gained as a zombie had mixed with the serum. The power that had been stuck for years suddenly broke through its limit. A powerful force burst from my body, almost knocking everyone down.Adrian let go of me and stared in shock. Tears ran down his injured face, leaving clean lines through the dried blood."Layla, you came back."He reached out to hold me.I turned slightly aside, avoiding his hand.Adrian's hand stopped in midair. The joy on his face disappeared, replaced by pain. He understood why I rejected him and didn't try to defend himself.I didn't look at him again. I stared at Erin. She was still holding the dagger, her whole body shaking."The day Old Saint Clair fell, I pushed you onto the ar

Adrian walked through the opening and reached my side. Then his legs gave out, and he fell to his knees. He bit the strap of the case and opened it with his only working hand. Inside was a pale blue vial—the serum that could turn a zombie back into a human.Mark followed him and read the instructions. His face turned pale. "This drug has never been tested on humans. The success rate is less than five percent. If it fails, both her zombie and human genes could collapse. She could die immediately."Adrian looked down at me. "She's already dying.""At least wait until we can take her back to the fortress—""She can't wait." Adrian cut him off. "We have no other choice."Without hesitation, he pushed the needle into a vein that wasn't completely burned and injected all the serum. For a second, everything was silent. Then my screams filled the ruins.Turning back into a human hurt far more than becoming a zombie. My body wasn't simply healing. My rotten bones, poisoned blood, and decayed sk

"Mark, stay here. If she dies, I'll never forgive any of you—or myself."Adrian left without waiting for supplies or backup. He took only his sword and a half-used energy vial before heading alone into the Red Zone. The next twenty-four hours felt endless. The zombies stayed packed around me, refusing to let anyone close. Mark and the others didn't dare break through. They stayed outside the wall, watching for other Mutants and checking my vital signs through the gaps. The wound in my chest had stopped bleeding, but that didn't mean I was healing. I simply had almost no blood left. My chest barely moved as I breathed.Erin was handcuffed to the bumper of one of the SUVs.A suppressor had blocked her healing ability. Her face was covered in dust and blood. She no longer looked like the innocent, fragile woman from before."Mark, let me go." She tried to win him over with tears. "Adrian will never come back alive. The Red Zone is crawling with high-tier Mutants. That serum was only menti

I was dying. But just before I lost consciousness, my Zombie Queen instincts activated my psychic power to protect me.A deep growl echoed through the ruins. Then, hundreds—maybe thousands—of zombies came out of the nearby streets and buildings. They didn't attack anyone. Instead, they surrounded me, using their bodies to build a wall between Adrian and me.Adrian held on to me, but several zombies rushed forward and pushed him away. Others quickly pulled me behind the wall."Get away from me! Give her back!"Adrian attacked with his lightning. Rows of zombies fell, but more immediately took their place, using their bodies to protect their unconscious Zombie Queen.Mark grabbed Adrian from behind. "Stop! They're not attacking us. They're just keeping you away from her."Adrian fought desperately to break free. "She's dying! I have to save her!"Mark shouted, his eyes red. "Captain Hart doesn't want you near her! She may be unconscious, but her body remembers what you did. You attacked

Adrian stumbled backward, all the strength leaving his body. His lips shook. He reached for me but stopped halfway. The hands that had just driven a sword through my heart now didn't even dare touch me.Erin still didn't understand what was happening. She came out from behind Daniel and grabbed Adrian's arm. "Quick, pull out the sword. It's still alive. We need to take out its energy core now."Adrian spun toward her.All the gentleness in his eyes disappeared. He looked at her with pure rage.He grabbed Erin by the throat, lifted her off the ground, and slammed her into a stone pillar.Erin coughed up blood, kicking helplessly in the air. "Adrian... what are you doing..."Adrian's voice came through clenched teeth. "I put that ring on her finger myself. It has a Defense Force biometric lock. Only Layla can wear it."His fingers tightened around Erin's throat. "You just told me you found Layla's clothes in the rubble and that this zombie ate her. Erin, did you lie to me?"Everyone froz
