Chapter 1

[Detected: Affection levels of the Hayes brothers and the male lead have reached 95%! The marriage mission with the male lead, Julian Hart, has been completed! Congratulations, host!]

[Once the body dies, you may return to the real world. The reward will be a hundred million dollars and a full recovery from bone cancer!]

I suppressed the surge of wild joy rising in my chest. I could finally go home!

My eldest and third brothers stayed behind with Elena, while my second brother was sent to escort me back.

I glanced instinctively at the man beside me—my second brother, Noah Hayes. He had been scowling ever since we got in the car, clearly unwilling to be here.

It was only when a message from Elena came through that his expression finally softened into a smile.

Sensing my gaze, he immediately locked his phone and frowned. “What? Still not over it? Thinking of going back to ruin things between Julian and Elena? Elena’s young. She’s been through a lot. Why can’t you just leave her alone?”

I dug my nails into my palm and let out a self-mocking laugh. If we were talking about age, I was actually a year younger than Elena.

Perhaps he noticed how pale I looked, but he suddenly let out a sigh. “Just apologize to her when we get back. Stop being childish.”

He reached out to pat my head. I leaned away slightly and asked, “Why should I apologize? What did I do wrong?”

Noah’s hand froze, and he replied with an impatient tone, “Maya, don’t push your luck!”

I closed my eyes. Even if it began as part of the mission, after all these years, some of it had become real. I had truly been hurt by their indifference.

It would soon be all over.

“After Elena’s competition, you’re coming with us to apologize.”

I said nothing. Instead, I spoke to the system in my mind. "Once this body dies, I can go back, right?"

[Yes.]

I let out a slow breath and glanced out the window, taking in my surroundings. Once I was sure no one else would get hurt, I unlocked the door and yanked it open.

Noah, who had been lecturing nonstop, suddenly yelled, “Maya! What are you doing?!”

I ignored him and jumped without hesitation. The cold wind howled past my ears as a terrifying sense of weightlessness swallowed me.

I shut my eyes, not feeling a trace of fear in me.

The next second, an arm wrapped tightly around my waist. Someone pulled me into their arms, shielding me as we crashed toward the roadside brush. The world spun violently, and I heard a muffled groan.

We rolled several times before finally stopping. The person holding me was slashed and bleeding from the branches, while I remained completely unharmed.

I looked up and met Noah’s terrified eyes. My voice was calm. “Let go.”

He stared at my indifferent face and roared, “I only said a few things to you! And for that, you jumped out of a moving car? We’ve spoiled you rotten! This is just another stunt to get our attention, isn’t it? Drop the act!”

I ignored him, prying his hands off me. I pushed myself up and scanned the area, quickly spotting a black car speeding straight toward us.

“I’ll take the hit myself. Remember to pay for their repairs.”

Leaving that behind, I rushed straight toward it.

“Maya!”

Noah’s desperate shout tore through the air. He struggled to get up, but he was too late.

I rushed forward, filled with hope as I welcomed death. I did not want to stay here for even one more second.

The screech of brakes split the air. The black car stopped just in time.

I stumbled backward and fell into Noah’s arms as he rushed forward.

“Are you insane? Maya, have you completely lost your mind?!” His eyes were red as his hands moved frantically over my face and my shoulders. “Did it hit you? Are you hurt? Say something!”

Still, I did not die. I lowered my gaze as disappointment flooded in. My gaze fell on Noah’s leg. His pant leg was already soaked through with blood.

If this had been before, I would have been sobbing uncontrollably, wishing I could take his place. Now, I simply looked away.

“What? Do I need your permission just to die?”

“No! That’s not it!” Julian roared in despair. “You’re back now, aren’t you? My lab already got results. We extracted Elena’s system…”I let out a cold laugh and cut him off, “Your research is just you torturing others in more brutal ways and numbing yourselves with self-destruction.”Suddenly, a figure crashed through the door, holding a knife, and lunged straight at me. “Maya! It’s all because of you that I’ve become like this!”It was Elena! I barely recognized her. Her face was covered in grotesque scars. One of her eyes was gone entirely, the empty socket hollow and chilling.Julian reacted instantly. In the split second she lunged, he kicked her hard in the chest. She let out a piercing scream, flew backward, and slammed onto the ground. She lay on the ground as blood continuously spilled from her mouth.“Maya… you deserve to die! They ruined everything I had all because of you…”She did not finish her sentence. Her body went still.Julian did not even look at her. His eye

My voice had barely fallen when a familiar force of pulling swept through my entire body. Everything around me turned into a cold, sterile white. In the next second, I was already standing outside an ICU ward. The corridor was filled with the sharp smell of disinfectant, enough to make my stomach churn.Through the glass door, a familiar yet foreign body lay motionless on the bed. It belonged to Maya, the original female lead. Her face was as white as paper. Her body was pierced with tubes of all kinds, all connected to the life-support machines beside her.The flickering lines on the monitor were the only proof she was still alive.Beside the bed, slumped in exhaustion, was a familiar figure. It was Zeph. He used to wear his white coat neatly, always composed, softly explaining lab stories to me. However, his hair was a mess now, sticking damply to his forehead. The once-fitting white coat hung loosely on him, as though it were draped over a skeleton. He slumped at the bedside, o

I returned to the orphanage where I grew up. After the head of the orphanage, Mrs. Page passed away, the place was closed due to a lack of funding. The once lively little building had long lost its warmth. Moss crept up the walls, and the iron gate was rusted over.I stood outside the gate. My eyes stung slightly with emotion. When I was very young, I was abandoned at the orphanage gate. It was Mrs. Page who picked me up and raised me. She had been the only warmth in my life, but she passed away from illness when I was in college. Before I could ever repay her, I had already lost the only family I had in this world. She used to always say, “Maya, be someone who carries light in her heart.”It had been many years, yet I still remembered those words. Now that I had the means, I would naturally do my part to preserve that warmth for her. It took me three months to rebuild the orphanage. I renamed it Sunshine Orphanage.I hoped I could become what Mrs. Page once was for me for thes

Doctors kept me in for repeated rounds of examinations, and only after confirming I was completely fine did they finally discharge me.The first thing I did was go to the bank. As I looked at the long string of numbers in my account, I slowly let out a breath of relief. The system’s voice sounded again.[Host, I’m leaving now. There are some truths. Would you still want to know?]I ran my fingers over the bank card and said nothing. This unreliable system had thrown me into another world and left me there for 15 years without a word. Still, it had given me a second life. After a moment of thought, I slowly nodded.[The female lead who shars your name, Maya Hayes, died unexpectedly. It caused the collapse of the world’s core structure.][To stabilize it, we had no choice but to select suitable individuals from parallel worlds as substitutes for the heroine.][You, sharing her name, suffering from terminal illness, and on the verge of death, were the optimal candidate.]The syst

My soul hovered in midair, and I could clearly see everyone at the doorway freeze in place.Noah stumbled forward, nearly falling as he rushed to me. His trembling hands pressed desperately against the wound on my wrist. His face was deathly pale. He could barely force his voice out of his throat.“Maya… Don’t scare me… Call a doctor. Hurry, call a doctor!”The wound on his leg split open again from the strain, but he did not seem to notice. He just stared helplessly at Felix, our eldest brother, by the door with panic written all over his face.Felix came back to his sense and roared toward the maids outside, “Call the family doctor and have him stop her bleeding!”The doctor rushed in and quickly wrapped thick gauze around my wrist. However, the bright red blood still seeped through. Sweat poured down the doctor’s face. He reached out and checked my pulse, hesitating.“Mr. Felix, Ms. Hayes is already…”Felix’s eyes turned bloodshot. He did not dare to look at my wound. He only

I frowned. My voice was calm. “Can’t I decide to get rid of something dirty?”Zeph’s chest rose and fell violently. His eyes were filled with both pain and rage. He suddenly stepped forward, crushing the protection charm beneath his shoe, grinding it hard into the floor. A cold laugh escaped him as he mocked me.“Maya, you’ve been spoiled so much that you’ve lost your conscience. You’re an ingrate!“No wonder Julian chose Elena over you. You…”“Zeph!” Felix cut him off. His tone sounded heavy.Zeph’s eyes were bloodshot as he fixed me with a long, searching stare. It was as though he was trying to find even a trace of regret or sorrow on my face. However, all he saw was an emotionless, dead calmness. His whole body trembled with anger. A suppressed growl rose in his throat. “Maya! This protection charm belongs to Elena. It was only lent to you. What right do you have to throw it away?!”Strangely, I felt nothing but calm. “I’ll replace it.” My indifference only made him explod
