Chapter 3

Penulis: Jo NoBite
After that night, I was carrying the heirs of three clans at once.

Rabbit.

Wolf.

Fox.

The news threw the entire shifter world into an uproar.

Once the clans learned I could carry heirs from different bloodlines at the same time, they began dreaming of an endless future of descendants.

Over the days that followed, Rowan, Fenrir, and Kael took turns caring for me.

Rowan had always been gentle and attentive. He handled my meals, my medicine, and every small detail of my daily life.

Fenrir was not good with words, but every day he brought back the best game he could find, determined to keep me strong.

Kael was the lightest presence of all. He stayed at my side, making jokes and trying to keep me smiling.

There were moments when I almost believed they cared for me.

Almost believed they saw me as something more than the means to continue their bloodlines.

But I knew better than to expect human morality from shifters.

Carrying three bloodlines weakened me badly.

The clan healer examined me and warned that the pregnancy was too dangerous.

“If you carry all three to term,” he said gravely, “you may not survive the birth.”

He advised them to choose one bloodline to let go.

None of them would.

Fenrir was the first to refuse.

“This was supposed to be the wolf clan’s turn. If anyone steps aside, it should be one of you.”

Kael paced the room, his expression strained.

“This is the fox clan’s first heir in generations. I can’t be the one to give that up.”

Rowan looked toward the little graves in the yard, his voice distant.

“The rabbit clan is weak. We can’t compete with the others.

“If we lose this chance, who knows how long we’ll have to wait for another?”

Then he turned back to me and softened his voice.

“Ayla, you’ll be fine. I’ll find the best healer in every territory.”

Just then, the system appeared again.

[Host, you may relinquish the rabbit heir. The rabbit-clan continuation task is already complete.]

Its voice was unusually urgent.

[As long as the wolf and fox heirs are born, you may still return to your original world. There is no need to take this risk.]

Ever since I became pregnant with Rowan’s child, the system had been pleading with me every day.

Again and again.

I had already given birth thirteen times in this world.

After every birth, the system would go dormant for a while, drained by the energy it had expended.

At first, I had not been completely sure.

But now, watching its panic, I knew my guess had been right.

I would go home.

But I would not let the system that had trapped me here walk away untouched.

I rested a hand over my swollen stomach and smiled faintly.

“No. I’m not giving up any of them.

“They’ll be here in a week. I’m looking forward to meeting them.”

Because the moment they arrived would be the moment I left.

All three men let out a breath of relief.

“The wolf clan is strong,” Fenrir said. “I’ll protect you from now on.”

“The fox clan will protect you too,” Kael added. “I don’t care about the black serpent clan, the bear clan, or anyone else.”

Rowan looked at me with hopeful eyes.

“When the rabbit baby is born, we can live happily together again. Just like before.”

I smiled and nodded.

Inside, I laughed.

Shifters' promises were worth nothing.

For the sake of bloodlines, they would say anything.

A week passed in the blink of an eye.

When the day finally came, the pain was worse than anything I had ever endured.

I clutched the sheets as wave after wave of agony tore through me.

Outside the room, Fenrir and Kael had no idea what to do.

“Is she going to be all right?” Fenrir asked, his voice tight.

“She sounds like she’s in so much pain,” Kael said. “What if something happens?”

“Stop saying that.”

Rowan stood at the door with his fists clenched, staring through the narrow opening.

“Ayla will be fine. She’s done this before.

“She’ll be safe this time too.”

But I could not hear them.

The pain swallowed everything.

At last, after hours that felt endless, three cries filled the room one after another.

[Ding. Congratulations, Host. Bloodline Continuation Mission complete. Preparing return to original world.]

At last.

I was free.

Then the healer suddenly cried out.

“She’s too weak. We can’t stop the bleeding!”

At the same time, the system’s voice rang out again.

[Ding. System energy depleted. Initiating self-destruction protocol.]

[Destruction countdown: three… two…]

As darkness closed over me, I heard the system laugh.

[Host, do you really think destroying me means you’re free?]

[I left you a parting gift.]

[Enjoy it.]

Three days later, just as they were preparing to bury me, Rowan came back.He was covered in bruises and barely steady on his feet. But he ran straight to me, his eyes blazing.“Ayla, I did it.“I struck back at the clans who hurt you. None of them are coming after you again.“Look. The people who made you suffer are gone.”I barely heard him.All I could think about was stopping them from burying me.“They have to burn my body. If they leave it here, I’ll never get home!”But no one could hear me.Fenrir dug the grave.Kael gently cleaned my body with a damp cloth.Only Rowan kept talking to me, over and over, as if I could answer.Just as they were about to lower me into the earth, Rowan suddenly spoke.“Wait.“I remember something Ayla once told me.“She said she didn’t want to be buried underground. She was afraid of the dark.“She wanted her ashes scattered back into the earth.”I froze.Something I had said without thinking. He had remembered. The pyre was li

At the rabbit children’s innocent words, Rowan finally broke. He covered his face and began to sob.Seven days later, the three newborns opened their eyes.Fenrir carried them to my body and spoke gently.“This is your mother, Ayla.“She gave her life to bring you into the world.“Look at her carefully. Remember her face, because you will never see her again.”The three babies stared at me with wide, uncomprehending eyes. But they seemed to understand something in Fenrir’s voice. They looked at me as though they were trying very hard to remember. After confessing the truth that day, Rowan locked himself inside his cave and refused to see anyone.Fenrir and Kael took over caring for all six children. Then, two weeks later, Rowan suddenly emerged. His eyes were bright with a strange, feverish excitement.“Ayla, I did it.“I found a way to bring every clan that hurt you to its knees.“You don’t have to worry. None of them will escape what they deserve.”He stared down at

But even as he faced the hostile crowd, Rowan refused to move.“No.“While Ayla was alive, I failed her. I won’t let her be disturbed even in death.“If I don’t make it, Fenrir… please take care of the rabbit children for me.”He did not get to finish.Fenrir struck Rowan’s head.Rowan went limp at once.Fenrir threw him over one shoulder, glanced at the open window beside the door, and ran without looking back. The wolf clan was powerful.None of the other shifters wanted to risk a direct fight with Fenrir, so they let him go.With Rowan no longer blocking the doorway, the tiger-clan leader kicked the door open and rushed inside. But the bed was empty.Only the open window remained, banging against the wall in the wind.“We’ve been tricked,” someone snarled. The black serpent narrowed his eyes.“That fox is as cunning as ever. They can’t have gone far.”At the same time, I found myself trailing behind Kael as he ran through the forest with my body in his arms.I had n

The tiger-clan leader stood at the front of the crowd, his face dark with fury.“She was the only human in this world.“The only hope the shifter clans had for surviving.“How did you let her die?”The other shifters quickly joined in.“The healer said you forced Ayla to carry three heirs at once. How are you going to compensate the rest of us for that loss?“The wolf and fox clans are one thing. But Rowan, you already had the rabbit clan’s first heirs. Why did you have to take another turn?”Then the black serpent shifter, who had been silent until then, spoke in a cold voice.“I heard Kael gave Ayla a preservation medicine. Her body is still untouched by decay.”His narrow eyes gleamed.“I wonder whether there is still time for the serpent clan to claim an heir.”The courtyard went still. Then the tiger clan spoke again.“If she carried three heirs once, she can do it again. The tiger clan will claim one.”“And the bear clan should be next in line,” another voice cut in

“No. It wasn’t me…“Ayla, don’t listen to them. How could I ever betray you?”Rowan reached for my hand, desperately trying to explain himself.“Ayla, I’m sorry. I never meant to hurt you. How could I bear to hurt you?“They were too strong. I couldn’t defeat them.“I never meant to use you. I only… I only wanted the rabbit babies to have a better life.”He was still lying. If I had not overheard his conversation with Fenrir that night, perhaps I would have believed him forever.Kael ignored him.He took a small white tablet from his pocket and placed it between my lips.“Stop!”Rowan tried to pull him away, but the tablet had already dissolved.“What did you give her?”“A fox-clan preservation medicine,” Kael said quietly. “It will keep her body from deteriorating for a month.”A shadow crossed his eyes.“I want the babies to open their eyes and remember Ayla’s face before we lay her to rest.”After the three of them eventually left, I noticed something strange.Ever

When I opened my eyes again, I broke down.I was still in the shifter world.Rowan stood before me, his face pale and empty.“Rowan…”I called his name without thinking. But he did not react. He stood frozen in place, as though he could not hear me at all.I stepped forward and reached for his shoulder. My hand passed straight through him.I stared at my transparent fingers. Then I ran into the birthing room.My body lay motionless on the bed.Only then did I understand.I was dead.I was nothing but a wandering spirit. The system’s final words echoed through my mind.[Do you really think destroying me means you’re free?][I left you a parting gift.]Why?After everything I had done, after all the pain I had endured, why was I still trapped here?Panic rose inside me.No.There had to be a way home.I tried everything I could think of.Nothing worked.I could not leave this world. In the end, exhausted and hopeless, I returned to my body’s side.Fenrir stood
