Chapter 5

 ...

Alexander was extremely furious when he heard that. In his opinion, it was Elena who wanted a life like this. She had no right to cry and make herself the victim.

When he saw her sobbing, Alexander clenched his fists and spoke without looking at her, as if he did not want to see her face.

“You’re the one who wanted this life. Don’t think I’ll pity you just because you keep crying.”

“The more you cry, the happier I am. So keep crying and keep suffering by my side.”

“I’ll wait for the day you agree to sign the divorce papers!”

Alexander growled before turning and walking away, as if he did not care about his wife who was starving and left in silence with his painfully cruel words.

After Alexander left, Elena stood there quietly for a moment. She rubbed her still-flat stomach and looked toward the still-open door.

“Maybe he doesn’t realize that no matter how rough or cruel he is to me, this place is still better than being with my mother.”

“If I leave, disaster will fall upon me—and on this innocent child.”

“I will gladly accept this small suffering rather than risk this child’s life out there.”

Elena whispered bitterly. She gave a faint, painful smile as she lowered her gaze to her still-flat stomach. Elena knew that if she left or agreed to sign the divorce, a disaster that could threaten her child’s life would be waiting.

“It’s time for us to eat, my little one. I’m sorry your mother can only cook instant noodles for now. Later, I’ll make something delicious for the both of us.”

Elena whispered with a soft smile as she wiped away her tears. For the sake of her unborn child, she strengthened herself. Her small, delicate hands reached for the cooked instant noodles.

She planned to eat on the terrace facing the forest. At sunset like this, the place felt quiet and somewhat frightening—but strangely, to Elena, it was calming.

Knock… knock… knock…

Just as Elena was about to eat, someone suddenly knocked on the door quite loudly.

Elena was startled. Reflexively, her hands clenched tightly in fear that it might be Alexander.

“No way, he was just here. Besides, he wouldn’t bother knocking if he came.”

“Who is it?”

She whispered softly, her breathing heavy. The small house was quite far from the main mansion, so it was natural for Elena to feel afraid since she was alone here.

Knock… knock… knock…

The knocking grew louder, making Elena jump. But after the second knock, she could breathe in relief when she realized it was one of the mansion’s servants.

“Miss, since you’re not opening the door, we’ll come in by force!”

Dorothy called out. She and several other servants were carrying a large amount of food.

Elena’s eyes widened, and her stomach growled louder when she saw the luxurious dishes being placed one by one on the table.

Her gaze locked onto the food, which was clearly far better and healthier than instant noodles. She was starving and truly wanted to devour it immediately.

But politely, she waited until the servants finished arranging everything.

Once Dorothy was done instructing the others to place the dishes, she stood in front of Elena, who was barely holding back her hunger.

Dorothy and the other servants looked at her with cynical and disgusted expressions.

“Miss, Mr. Kingston asked us to bring you food. He said this is for the baby’s health, not for you personally.”

“He doesn’t want the baby’s growth to be hindered because of an incompetent mother.”

“From now on, we’ll deliver ingredients here daily. Mr. Kingston said you must continue cooking yourself because he doesn’t want you living comfortably here.”

Dorothy spoke firmly. Her gaze remained the same as before—filled with hatred, disdain, and disgust.

Hearing that, Elena clenched her hands. She forced a faint smile and nodded politely.

“I understand. Please tell Mr. Kingston that I can take care of myself.”

Elena replied gently before sitting down. The servants soon left the small house.

“She dares to dream of becoming the lady of this house after pretending to be a servant and trapping Mr. Kingston into sleeping with her until she got pregnant.”

“She’s just like her mother—both cheap women. I hope Mr. Kingston divorces her soon. I don’t want him living with someone like that.”

The servants whispered among themselves as they walked away.

They all hated Elena, believing she was completely unworthy of standing beside Alexander Kingston. Especially with her background—a mother who had been a mistress—Elena was looked down upon by all of them.

Knowing that the food had been provided solely for the baby’s health, Elena ate it eagerly.

Once again, tears streamed down her cheeks as she ate. She did not want to cry, but this bitter life always made her tears fall on their own.

Elena cried while eating hungrily. Her gaze drifted toward the door leading to the forest. She always pushed aside her aching, empty heart, constantly telling herself that everything would be fine—even though it felt so difficult and painful.

Meanwhile, in Alexander’s study,

His office was near the library, separated by a classic crystal glass wall that displayed the majestic moon outside.

He sat near the glass, staring at his screen. While working, he monitored Elena through CCTV cameras installed in the small house so he could observe all her movements and conversations.

Alexander was still convinced that Elena had been sent by his half-brother to trap him.

Now he sat with his arms folded, his sharp blue eyes watching Elena eat while crying.

Her beautiful golden hair shimmered under the moonlight that slipped through the doorway. His gaze examined every detail.

“So fragile. With that beauty, you could have had a better life. Why did you have to enter my room and carry my child?”

“I don’t want you. I hate you because you’re the daughter of a woman who stole another woman’s husband!”

“I hate cheap women like the one standing beside my father now—the one who suddenly came with her child and shattered my mother’s heart. You’re all the same, and I’ll get rid of you one by one.”

Alexander muttered as his eyes remained fixed on Elena’s tearful face. She looked toward the outside as if she were desperate to escape her cage—but unable to do so.

Two weeks later,

For two weeks, Alexander immersed himself in work. He even forgot that he was married now.

While in his office, someone suddenly called him.

Ring… ring… ring…

Alexander frowned as he clenched his fist upon seeing that it was his father calling.

“Father? Why is he calling now?”

He despised his father, but he still answered because if his father was calling, it meant something important.

“Hello?”

Alexander spoke curtly. His father was also at the company, though in a different skyscraper building.

“Tonight, bring your wife home. It’s been two weeks since you married. According to our family tradition, your wife must be formally welcomed. Her family has also been invited.”

“I don’t care what you feel, but behave properly during dinner. Don’t disgrace the family name.”

Robert Kingston said.

Despite Elena’s background, Robert was actually pleased with his son’s sudden marriage.

With this, Alexander had swallowed his own words about hating his father’s second wife for coming from a humble background and being labeled a homewrecker.

Elena’s background alone was enough to embarrass Alexander in front of him—and Robert enjoyed that.

He was pleased because now Alexander had no grounds to reject his second wife when his own wife came from a similar background.

“BASTARD!”

Alexander growled after the call ended abruptly.

Bang!

He slammed his fist against the desk so hard that his knuckles turned bluish.

His face flushed with rage.

“That useless father thinks I’ll accept his second wife as my mother just because of Elena!”

“NEVER!”

Alexander snarled before storming out of his office. He needed to calm himself down.

Meanwhile, at Alexander’s mansion,

Several servants entered Elena’s small house again, which now looked more beautiful because Elena had decorated it with plants and flowers.

Elena was startled when they suddenly came in while she was painting on the back terrace.

“W-What is it?”

Elena asked when she saw them carrying dresses and makeup tools.

“Mr. Kingston asked us to dress you up. Tonight, you and Mr. Kingston will attend dinner at his parents’ residence.”

One of the servants announced.

Elena was surprised and nervous, but before she could respond, the servants immediately pulled her away and began dressing her up somewhat roughly.

After some time, the makeup and elegant classic dress were complete. Her long wavy hair was tied halfway back with a ribbon.

She looked sweet, her blue eyes shimmering like a sparkling coastline.

Elena waited for her husband to pick her up, but after a while, it wasn’t him who arrived—it was his personal driver.

“Miss, Mr. Kingston ordered me to pick you up. He said he doesn’t want to be in the same car as you.”

The driver delivered Alexander’s message clearly.

Elena did not look sad at all. She gave a faint smile. She already knew Alexander hated her, and she had accepted that reality.

“Alright, thank you for delivering his message.”

Elena replied gently before getting into the car. Though she smiled, her gaze out the window betrayed her—deep and lonely, filled with countless unspoken sorrows.

Soon, they reached a crossroads not far from her father-in-law’s residence. She could see her husband’s usual car parked nearby.

“Miss, Mr. Kingston asked you to switch cars now. He doesn’t want his father to know you came separately.”

The driver explained, and Elena immediately understood the situation.

She did not protest or complain. She smiled again and stepped out of the car.

She walked toward her husband’s vehicle.

When she entered, she saw her husband sitting with his arms folded, looking in the opposite direction.

Elena immediately understood that her presence was unwanted—that Alexander was forced to share this car with her.

Alexander had intentionally waited at the crossroads near his father’s mansion. He did not want his father to know about his cold relationship with Elena. For now, he was focused on taking control of the Kingston empire, and his marriage issues could not be exposed.

For the moment, he had to please his father and avoid creating new problems.

Soon, they arrived at Robert Kingston’s grand and magnificent mansion. The head butler and servants immediately welcomed Alexander and Elena.

“Don’t you dare put on a sad or depressed face. You must look happy, and our relationship must appear fine.”

“Do you understand?”

Alexander whispered as he pulled Elena’s hand and made her link arms with him.

Elena’s gaze immediately fell on his arm.

She hated touches like this—fake touches, fake smiles, and a fake life.
