Chapter 3

Author: Rosa
For the next two days, I moved through the place like a ghost, erasing every trace of myself.

I dug up the calming herbs I'd spent three years growing on the balcony, roots and all, and tossed them into the composter. I stripped the soft slipcovers I'd chosen off the living room couch, packed them, and sent them to the donation center...

Silas noticed none of it. A powerful Alpha had no time for the small details of daily life. He even took my silence as a sign that I was giving in.

"I'm glad you've come around. Lilian is just an ally. You're my Luna, so act like one and show a little grace."

On Friday morning, he sat at the table eating the mass-produced breakfast the housekeeping robot had brought.

"The Frost Moon envoys are hosting a thank-you banquet at the Red Peak keep tonight. You're coming with me."

I stopped packing. "Why would I go?"

"Don't you want everyone to see you by my side? The Elders' Council and the heads of every division will be there tonight. It's the perfect chance to introduce you as the Luna of Red Peak."

He said it as though he were granting me a great favor.

Before, when I'd asked him to introduce me to his allies, he'd said the werewolf elite would look down on a wolfless commoner. He didn't want me to face their mockery.

Now he was offering to take me, probably because the night was all about Lilian and he wanted to look like a generous, kind Alpha.

"Fine," I said.

I wanted to see for myself what his powerful friends really thought of Lilian and me.

At seven that evening, the banquet hall at the Red Peak keep glittered. Lilian sat in the guest of honor's seat, wearing a shimmering frost-white gown and a glowing blood-marrow pendant.

I'd nearly broken my spine digging that stone out of a polar crevasse for Silas, and I'd barely made it out alive. It was meant to protect his heart.

Now it hung on another woman's chest.

"Silas, Elena came too."

Lilian approached gracefully, glass in hand. "Hello, Elena. Silas talks about you all the time. He says you're the gentlest, most considerate person. I'm so glad I finally get to meet you."

She held out her lace-gloved hand for me to shake.

I stepped back half a pace to avoid her touch. "Princess Lilian."

For a moment, the whole banquet hall seemed to go still.

Silas grabbed my wrist and whispered in my ear, "Be sensible. Don't embarrass me in front of everyone."

Once we sat down, the talk around us turned to border wars and the inheritance of high-ranking bloodlines: which legion had stronger wolf riders, which secret realm had purer magic crystals.

I cut the cold steak on my plate without saying a word.

"Speaking of which, Alpha Kane is truly unmatched in battle."

A Frost Moon duke laughed heartily. "Last time, if Alpha Kane hadn't taken down three dark beasts single-handedly, the northern line would have collapsed."

Lilian stifled a laugh, her eyes sparkling. "Of course. But the wolfsbane backlash struck Silas then, and he nearly lost control. I was terrified. Luckily, I used a secret Frost Moon technique to calm his nerves."

The table erupted in good-natured laughter.

"A pure-blood and the strongest Alpha. The Moon Goddess herself must have made this match!"

Silas smiled, raised his glass, and drained it. He did nothing to correct them. If anything, he looked pleased.

My hand stayed steady on my fork.

The night of the northern riots, as the line was about to break, Silas's spirit beacon had shaken violently. The backlash sent poison flooding through our bond and into my mind. Back at the penthouse, I'd poured all my soul's strength into steadying his mind from hundreds of miles away.

I'd writhed on the floor in agony, bleeding from my eyes, ears, nose, and mouth. All the while, he'd been flirting with the princess beside him.

"Elena, don't you look after the Alpha's old injuries when you're in the city?"

Lilian suddenly turned to me, her tone a careful mix of reproach and concern. "The day before yesterday, Silas had stomach cramps so bad he went white, but he kept reading battle reports. It broke our hearts to watch. You don't have a wolf core, so you can't feel the Alpha's pain, but you could at least pay more attention to what he eats."

The table fell silent. A dozen proud, cold stares fixed on me with open contempt.

I set down my fork and looked Lilian straight in the eye.

"The bureau has three excellent medical teams. He knows how to call a medic."

Lilian shrank back. "I'm sorry... I didn't mean anything by it. I just care about Silas so much..."

Crack!

The crystal wine glass shattered in Silas's hand.

"Elena, are you done making a scene?!"

Silas stood, his face dark. "With all these dukes and allies here, you have to make things this ugly?"

"Did I say something embarrassing?"

I looked up at the man I'd loved for seven years, the man I'd spent seven years keeping alive.

"Lilian was kind enough to remind you of your duties, and this is the attitude you give her? Apologize right now!"

I stood and looked at him calmly. "Alpha, since someone else knows how to care for you better than I do, a wolfless commoner like me doesn't need to worry about you anymore. I won't embarrass you again. I'll leave now."

"Elena! Walk out that door and see what happens!" he roared behind me. The force of his power shattered two chandeliers overhead.

I pushed through the crowd and opened the keep's huge carved bronze doors. I didn't stop.

After seven years, I no longer had to grind my dignity into the mud to protect his image as Alpha.

After Silas left, the little southern town grew peaceful again.Half a month later, Cassiopeia told me that on the night Silas returned to the North, his frenzy spun out of control.Without my beacon to soothe him, his wolfsbane poison erupted under the full moon, and he nearly leveled half the main keep.To stop his rampage, the Elders' Council used 12 black-iron pillars made to seal demons. Silas was badly hurt, his spirit core cracked, and he nearly lost his place on the Alpha's throne."I heard that when he woke up, the first thing he did was give up authority over 30 percent of his territory. He stepped down as supreme commander of the standing armies and exiled himself to a labor fortress on the frozen border."Cassiopeia took a sip of red wine, looking satisfied."As for Lilian, Red Peak imposed harsh sanctions on the Frost Moon clan. That pampered princess lost her honors and was sent to a distant continent for an arranged marriage."I trimmed the plants in my yard, my face cal

"You've got the wrong house, Alpha. Ordinary people live here." I turned to go.He strode into the yard, latched the gate behind him, and closed in on me, his wolf presence heavy with pent-up emotion. He'd lost a lot of weight. His tactical coat was wrinkled and shabby, and his noble Alpha bearing was gone."Elena, I was wrong."His eyes red, he dropped to his knees on the flagstones before me."I've driven Lilian out for good. The Frost Moon envoys have lost every privilege they had, and I burned everything she left behind! From now on, only you can set foot on the East Cliff throne. Red Peak's highest covenant will bear your name forever! Please... come home with me, okay?"He hurriedly pulled a red sandalwood box from his coat.Inside, the black-gold wolf seal glowed faintly."This seal gives you ownership of half of Red Peak's lands. Its holder can stand in the Alpha's place and draw on half the pack's spiritual fortune. It can give you a wolf of your own!"Then he took out the par

Lilian crumpled to the floor, stunned by the blast. She had never seen Silas so unhinged."Silas... why are you yelling at me? Is that woman threatening to run away again?! She's just a wolfless commoner who can't survive without you. Why do you care so much?!"Silas stood, his tall shadow swallowing Lilian. He looked at the face he'd once found sweet and charming, and his stomach turned. He tore the sensor bracelet from her wrist, crushed it into a lump of scrap metal, and hurled it out the door along with Lilian herself!"As of now, the Frost Moon envoys have no privileges in Red Peak territory. Set foot here again, and I'll take it as a declaration of war. I'll tear your whole clan apart at the boundary stone!""Silas! You're out of your mind! Without my clan's support, how will you survive your frenzy? You'll lose control, and it'll tear you apart from the inside!"For the next three days, Silas scrubbed the penthouse like a man possessed. He ripped out and destroyed every floor ti

Frantic, Silas used every bit of authority he had in the territory to hunt down anyone who might know where I'd gone.He finally tracked Cassiopeia down in the Elders' Council confinement hall. His golden-brown eyes were bloodshot, and his pupils had shrunk to pinpoints. "Cassiopeia, where's Elena? Where on earth is she hiding?!"Cassiopeia scoffed. "Alpha Kane, finally back from your honeymoon? Was the snow romantic? I bet the pure-blood princess tasted sweet.""Cut the crap!" Silas roared. The frenzied power of a high-ranking Alpha blasted the wooden chair behind him to pieces. "There's a limit to how far she can take this! She severed the blood bond and erased her temple mark. Does she even know what she's doing?!"Cassiopeia looked at him as if she'd heard the world's worst joke, her face full of contempt."Silas, who throws a fit by damaging her own soul and severing a blood bond?! You still don't know why she left, do you?"Cassiopeia's icy gaze seemed to cut straight through him

The Southern Free Trade Zone was blazing hot. The sea breeze was damp, carrying a hint of brine and the fresh scent of greenery.Humans and wandering supernaturals lived side by side here. There were no rigid bloodline ranks or brutal pack laws.I rented a little white stone house with a yard beside the coastal road and paid three years' rent up front. My landlady, a kind older human woman, helped me carry my luggage into the bedroom facing the sea.I lay on the wooden bed under cotton sheets and listened to the waves crash beyond the window. No battle alarms. No backlash poison. No endless, thankless servitude. For the first time in seven years, I fell into a deep, peaceful sleep without a splitting headache.I didn't learn what Silas had gone through on the far northern ice fields until a week later. Cassiopeia called me on an encrypted line, laughing so hard she could barely breathe. On their first night at the crystal ice palace, Silas raised his wrist out of habit and tapped his w

Silas didn't come back to the penthouse that night. He returned the next evening reeking of frost and snow, with a hint of the snow lotus scent Lilian always wore.He watched me pack. "Done throwing your tantrum?"I didn't look up or say anything."Are you going to keep pretending you can't hear me?" He stepped forward and kicked over a storage box with his combat boot."Elena, you're taking this hard-to-get act way too far. You think if you give me the cold shoulder for a few days and move to the outer city, I'll come running after you?"I straightened up. "I'm not expecting you to come after me.""Then who's that miserable look for? Because of what you said last night, Lilian went home and cried for half the night. She nearly lost control of her spirit! You owe her a formal apology.""I'm not apologizing.""You're impossibly stubborn!" Silas yanked his collar open in irritation and sank into the couch."I don't have time to waste on this. Next Sunday, on the night of the full moon, I
