Chapter 2

작가: Shirley
My heart leaped into my throat. I dug my nails into my leather clutch to keep my expression calm.

I took half a step back, putting distance between us. My voice was polite and detached. "A wedding surprise for you and Ava. I asked Madre to help me keep it secret."

The surprise was my permanent disappearance from his life. Lorenzo's brow tightened, catching the defensiveness in my posture.

After a long silence, he loosened his tie in frustration.

"It's for the best that you've figured it out. I'm ten years older than you and, in name, your uncle. Enough of this childish talk about marrying me. You're still young. Go meet some men your own age."

The air in front of me warped again as the comments reappeared.

[Isabella, yell at him! This old man is going crazy because you're avoiding him. He's just saying the opposite of what he means! He's been convinced since the day you kissed him on your 18th birthday.]

[The ten-year age gap, the titles, he doesn't care about any of it. He's just afraid the old guard in the family will move against you, so he's holding back and won't touch you!]

[He just ditched his fiancée and was frantically searching for you! He wanted to tell you he sent the broken pendant to a master jeweler in Switzerland to have it repaired!]

I lowered my lashes and agreed crisply. "Don't worry, Uncle. I won't pester you again."

With that, I started toward the main building's bedrooms. If I was flying to Sicily next month, it was time to pack.

My ready agreement seemed to hit Lorenzo like a punch to the gut. He watched my retreating back for a long time before silently following.

As we passed through the grand hall, Lorenzo called out to me again.

"Today is the Feast of Saint Anthony."

He held out his hand. Lying between his long, clean fingers was a small cross pendant, its platinum chain polished to a shine.

My eyelashes fluttered.

[Ahhh! You once made an offhand wish to get a cross blessed by a cardinal from the man you love on Saint Anthony's Day! I can't believe he actually remembered and flew to the Vatican for it!]

[I'm sobbing! The night you were in surgery, he knelt in the family chapel all night, reciting the entire Rosary, just so his little Principessa would live… I'm swooning!]

I looked at the cross. My name was engraved on the inside of the chain. I tugged at the corners of my mouth, but couldn't manage a smile.

"Thank you, Uncle. But you should save this kind of gift for Ava in the future. She's your Donna, after all."

Lorenzo froze, his Adam's apple bobbing. Just as he was about to speak, a burst of laughter erupted from the front hall.

"My God, she has no shame. How dare she show up in the main hall dressed like that?"

"She's the kind of shameless creature who would do anything for money. She can't hold a candle to our Principessa."

At the center of everyone's attention stood Ava, dressed in an extremely revealing lace slip, the fabric on her chest barely covering a thing.

She stood pale and trembling in the middle of the crowd, the picture of mortification.

It was the kind of dress a cheap streetwalker might wear, and its appearance at a formal Moretti banquet was a blatant insult to the family's traditions.

The moment she saw Lorenzo, she lunged into his arms as if grasping a lifeline, sobbing her heart out.

"A maid told me Isabella had this dress specially prepared, that you hoped I would wear it today… I didn't know it would look like this. It wasn't my fault..."

Lorenzo immediately took off his suit jacket and draped it over her shoulders. When he looked at me again, the last bit of warmth in his eyes had turned to ice.

"Isabella, you talk of being sensible, yet you pull these petty tricks behind my back. Is this how I raised you?"

It felt like a raw wound had been torn open in my chest.

I lifted my head, forcing back tears, and met his gaze, my voice calm. "I didn't give her that dress, nor did I instruct anyone to."

"You know me. If I'm not happy, I deal with it head-on. Why would I resort to such a cowardly trick?"

As I spoke, Lorenzo's expression softened slightly.

But Ava, still in his arms, sniffled and pulled something from her clutch, her tone innocent and aggrieved.

"Isabella, I'm sorry… Maybe I misheard. The maid gave me two things. Is this what you actually wanted me to see?"

Sobbing, she started to open the box. A stack of photos scattered onto the carpet.

They were a few obscene "private photos," along with a card bearing my signature that read: "Slut, if you want to seduce men, go sell yourself in a brothel. Don't get any ideas about Isabella's man."

Another burst of derisive laughter came from the guests, mixed with a few curses directed at me.

Ava let out a scream, her eyes rolled back, and she fainted.

A murderous aura instantly erupted from Lorenzo. He shot me a look so intense it was as if he wanted to swallow me whole.

"The handwriting is yours. Would she really frame you at the expense of her own reputation? Isabella, when did you become so venomous and vile? You are a ward of the Moretti family. Today, I will teach you the discipline your parents never could."

"Guards! Take Isabella to the cellar. No one lets her out without my command."

He scooped Ava into his arms and strode away. I took an instinctive step after him, trying to explain. "Uncle, I didn't…"

Lorenzo shoved me away, roaring, "Get lost!"

He didn't hold back his strength.

I slammed hard against a marble pillar. The still-healing gunshot wound on my waist tore open, and blood quickly soaked through my gown, blooming into a glaring patch of red.

A nearby bodyguard's face went white. He was about to call out to Lorenzo.

Shaking my head, I stopped him through the waves of pain.

I propped myself up against the pillar, slowly straightening. I looked at the man's retreating back and gave a bitter smile. "Take me to the cellar to receive my punishment."

For his decade of care, this repays my debt.

From this day forward, Lorenzo Moretti and I are even.

One month later. On the Falcone family's private island, in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily.I was lounging on a beach chair, sunbathing.Next to me, Dante was holding a small parasol, mixing me an Aperol Spritz with lemon, and glaring at another beige parasol not far away. Under that parasol sat Lorenzo, leaning on his cane, who had apparently come to deliver a honeymoon gift."Shameless bastard. The man can barely walk, and he's still trying to ruin our marriage."I was already used to his constant, jealous muttering. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively,"Casper, you're my legal husband. I'm wearing your ring. Why do you care what he does?"That one sentence smoothed all his ruffled feathers. Dante immediately grinned and went to get me a plate of cut watermelon and figs. The next second, my phone lit up again.A message from Lorenzo:"For the island banquet tonight, I had a set of custom jewelry delivered. It will go perfectly with the silk gown you had

Inside the castle, before the altar. The grand pipe organ played the wedding march.Wearing a lace veil with a long train, and holding the skirt of my custom gown, I walked down the aisle toward Dante at the end of the red carpet. The Cardinal stood at the center of the altar, solemnly reciting the sacred vows.As he reached the final line:"And do you, the bride, take Dante Falcone to be your lawfully wedded husband—""I object!"A hoarse, ragged man's voice shattered the serenity of the altar. An uproar instantly broke out among the guests.I instinctively turned to look. The moment I saw who it was, my heart skipped a beat.Lorenzo.He was frighteningly thin. The custom-made suit that usually gave him an air of authority now hung loosely on his frame. There was a recently stitched scar on his forehead, running from his temple to his hairline. His right leg was clearly not yet healed, and he had to lean heavily on a black ebony cane for support. He walked, step by step, leaning on hi

In the intensive care unit of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.Lorenzo slowly forced his heavy eyelids open. The family bodyguard standing by his bed let out a sigh of relief. "Don, you're finally awake!"…For the past two weeks, the biggest news across Sicily was that the Falcone family, an old-guard mafia dynasty, was having a wedding. The groom was Dante Falcone, the heir who had been kidnapped at the age of seven, miraculously survived, and had not been linked to a single woman for seventeen years. For nearly half a month, all the gossip rags had been frantically digging into the mysterious bride's background. But aside from her gender, all other details were locked behind the highest level of security, completely untraceable. For a time, the entire East Coast and European old-money circles were on tenterhooks, desperate to know who this mysterious new Falcone matriarch was.The day of the wedding.Outside the Falcone family's centuries-old castle on the coast of Taormina, a fleet

The proposal was a resounding success. The Falcone family board approved it on the spot, unanimously allocating the funds.I took the eight young analysts from my team, all recent graduates, to celebrate at a two-hundred-year-old Sicilian restaurant in the old town of Palermo. After the party, I stood outside the restaurant waiting for a car. A matte black luxury car slid silently to a stop in front of me.Dante rolled down the window, his light green eyes glinting mischievously in the streetlight, a smirk on his face."Well, if it isn't our esteemed director. Care for a ride from your loving fiancé?"Before the rest of my department could come out and see, I pulled open the passenger door and quickly got in.The car drove smoothly along the coastal road. I closed my eyes and pretended to be napping. From the driver's seat, Dante's voice, laced with complaint, suddenly broke the silence."So, when do I finally get to be your official fiancé?"Dante, sulking like a kicked puppy, began t

"Lorenzo!" I shot upright in my chair, my eyes flying open.It wasn't until I saw the minimalist light fixture above me and the glowing blue of the European stock market data on the screen in front of me that I realized I was awake.I had already left New York and had been in Sicily for almost two weeks.I had sworn to put Lorenzo Moretti behind me for good. But in the short nap I just took, I had dreamed of him again. In the dream, he was covered in blood, unconscious, and clutching something tightly to his chest.I closed my eyes and forced myself to take a deep breath of the salty Sicilian sea air, then slowly exhaled. The lingering panic and the frantic racing of my heart finally began to subside."Bad dream?"A man's light laugh came from the doorway.I looked up and saw Dante leaning against the doorframe, one hand casually in the pocket of his trousers. His light green eyes, a trait from his Spanish grandmother, caught the Mediterranean light, shining like chips of peridot."Our

The Appalachian Mountains coiled around the lawless land like a coarse noose.Lorenzo stepped out of the Agusta helicopter. Looking at the desolate mining area and abandoned trailer parks, he couldn't imagine what would have happened if he hadn't come today.Would the real Ava have been left to rot in this hell for the rest of her life? The propeller blades whipped up a fierce wind, making Lorenzo's cashmere coat flap wildly. It revealed the platinum heirloom pendant on his wrist, its cracks sealed with gold.It was the one Ava had supposedly broken by accident, the one he had sent to Geneva overnight for repair. If you didn't look closely, you would hardly notice the faint crack on the back.He raised his wrist and pressed his lips lightly to the crack. "Isabella, my Principessa. Just wait for me a little longer. I will go through hell and high water, but I will never let you go."Behind him, two bodyguards dragged a bruised and swollen Bruno out of the helicopter."Ouch—"Bruno was a
