Chapter 3

Author: Shirley
The underground cellar was cold and damp. Already weakened from my injury, I knelt for less than three hours before my vision went black and I passed out.

Sometime in the night, a fever took hold.

In my delirium, I was ten again. After my parents' deaths, the same mafia elders who once fawned over my family now treated me like a problem to be passed around, pushing me away, yet none were willing to let go of the legitimate businesses my parents had left behind.

Until a twenty-three-year-old Lorenzo strode into the funeral.

He looked every bit the cold-hearted demon, yet he bent down to wipe the tears from my face, his voice impossibly gentle.

"Principessa, don't be afraid. From now on, I'll kill anyone who dares to touch you. I will always be here to protect you."

"Liar..."

Tears streamed from my closed eyes as I murmured, my cheeks burning. "You don't protect me anymore."

Outside the door, a hand that had reached out to wipe away my tears froze mid-air.

After a long, long time, the person sighed softly and turned to leave.

When I opened my eyes again, it was two days later.

The wound on my waist had been re-stitched. I was in a clean silk nightgown, and my hair was dry, smelling faintly of the cedar shower gel Lorenzo always used.

In the empty space before me, the comments began to flicker again.

[The Don has been going crazy these last two days! He pointed a gun at the doctor's head, demanding he use the best surgical techniques, then stayed by your bedside, personally sponging you down to lower your fever!]

[The moment he lifted the gauze and saw your wound, his eyes went red… Sigh, are you really not going to forgive him?]

[This is too good! The second he heard you were awake, he canceled a huge negotiation over the East Coast shipping lanes!]

The crunch of tires on the gravel driveway sounded from downstairs.

My heart trembled, and I almost instinctively got up and went downstairs.

As I descended the stairs, holding the handrail, the main door of the estate was pushed open.

I managed a weak smile and went to greet him. "You're back, Uncle."

The next second, I met his dark, somber eyes. A chill ran down my spine, and I stopped dead in my tracks.

Lorenzo gave me no room to retreat. He closed the distance in a single stride and gripped my arm. "Isabella, look what you've done."

I was stunned.

"You bribed a professor to accuse Ava of plagiarism, which got her disciplined. In her distress, she crashed her car. And you have the nerve to stand there?!"

My face paled, and I shook my head. "It wasn't me…"

Lorenzo sneered, as if he had anticipated my denial.

"Still arguing? The professor identified you himself. He said you used Moretti funds to threaten him. In all of New York, who else hates Ava enough to be this consumed by jealousy? If it wasn't you, who was it? Do you expect me to believe Ava reported herself for a thesis she spent half a year writing?"

The accusation struck me like a physical blow.

But this wasn't the first time he had blamed me for something without a second thought.

The fire smoldering in my chest finally ignited.

I lifted my chin defiantly and met his gaze, my voice dripping with sarcasm.

"Lorenzo, you underestimate me. If I had done it, I would have had her stuffed in an oil drum and dumped in the Hudson River the first day she became a problem."

"I said I didn't do it, and I didn't do it."

My fingertips trembled with rage, my nails digging into my palms so hard they drew blood.

Lorenzo stared at me suspiciously for a few seconds. Before he could speak, his phone rang.

It was a voice message from Ava, her voice as weak as an injured kitten.

"Lorenzo, don't blame Isabella. She just loves you too much and feels insecure… It's all my fault. If I had just listened to her and left you, she wouldn't have resorted to such extreme measures. It's just a fractured leg. I'll be fine after a few months of rest..."

She played the part of a helpless victim, each word a deliberate barb.

Lorenzo's face darkened, his voice turning to ice.

"She's been hurt by you time and time again, yet she still speaks up for you. And you, you never reflect, never apologize. Isabella, I am so disappointed in you."

"Since you enjoy destroying what others care about, I'll let you have a taste of that loss yourself."

He nodded to the bodyguards behind him. They understood and went straight for my bedroom.

My heart sank, inch by inch, as a bodyguard came downstairs carrying a leather hardshell case.

I was completely stunned.

"Burn it."

His command was a single, cold word.

It was not loud, but it shattered my heart.

One month later. On the Falcone family's private island, in the Mediterranean Sea south of Sicily.I was lounging on a beach chair, sunbathing.Next to me, Dante was holding a small parasol, mixing me an Aperol Spritz with lemon, and glaring at another beige parasol not far away. Under that parasol sat Lorenzo, leaning on his cane, who had apparently come to deliver a honeymoon gift."Shameless bastard. The man can barely walk, and he's still trying to ruin our marriage."I was already used to his constant, jealous muttering. I rolled over, my eyes still closed, and said dismissively,"Casper, you're my legal husband. I'm wearing your ring. Why do you care what he does?"That one sentence smoothed all his ruffled feathers. Dante immediately grinned and went to get me a plate of cut watermelon and figs. The next second, my phone lit up again.A message from Lorenzo:"For the island banquet tonight, I had a set of custom jewelry delivered. It will go perfectly with the silk gown you had

Inside the castle, before the altar. The grand pipe organ played the wedding march.Wearing a lace veil with a long train, and holding the skirt of my custom gown, I walked down the aisle toward Dante at the end of the red carpet. The Cardinal stood at the center of the altar, solemnly reciting the sacred vows.As he reached the final line:"And do you, the bride, take Dante Falcone to be your lawfully wedded husband—""I object!"A hoarse, ragged man's voice shattered the serenity of the altar. An uproar instantly broke out among the guests.I instinctively turned to look. The moment I saw who it was, my heart skipped a beat.Lorenzo.He was frighteningly thin. The custom-made suit that usually gave him an air of authority now hung loosely on his frame. There was a recently stitched scar on his forehead, running from his temple to his hairline. His right leg was clearly not yet healed, and he had to lean heavily on a black ebony cane for support. He walked, step by step, leaning on hi

In the intensive care unit of New York-Presbyterian Hospital.Lorenzo slowly forced his heavy eyelids open. The family bodyguard standing by his bed let out a sigh of relief. "Don, you're finally awake!"…For the past two weeks, the biggest news across Sicily was that the Falcone family, an old-guard mafia dynasty, was having a wedding. The groom was Dante Falcone, the heir who had been kidnapped at the age of seven, miraculously survived, and had not been linked to a single woman for seventeen years. For nearly half a month, all the gossip rags had been frantically digging into the mysterious bride's background. But aside from her gender, all other details were locked behind the highest level of security, completely untraceable. For a time, the entire East Coast and European old-money circles were on tenterhooks, desperate to know who this mysterious new Falcone matriarch was.The day of the wedding.Outside the Falcone family's centuries-old castle on the coast of Taormina, a fleet

The proposal was a resounding success. The Falcone family board approved it on the spot, unanimously allocating the funds.I took the eight young analysts from my team, all recent graduates, to celebrate at a two-hundred-year-old Sicilian restaurant in the old town of Palermo. After the party, I stood outside the restaurant waiting for a car. A matte black luxury car slid silently to a stop in front of me.Dante rolled down the window, his light green eyes glinting mischievously in the streetlight, a smirk on his face."Well, if it isn't our esteemed director. Care for a ride from your loving fiancé?"Before the rest of my department could come out and see, I pulled open the passenger door and quickly got in.The car drove smoothly along the coastal road. I closed my eyes and pretended to be napping. From the driver's seat, Dante's voice, laced with complaint, suddenly broke the silence."So, when do I finally get to be your official fiancé?"Dante, sulking like a kicked puppy, began t

"Lorenzo!" I shot upright in my chair, my eyes flying open.It wasn't until I saw the minimalist light fixture above me and the glowing blue of the European stock market data on the screen in front of me that I realized I was awake.I had already left New York and had been in Sicily for almost two weeks.I had sworn to put Lorenzo Moretti behind me for good. But in the short nap I just took, I had dreamed of him again. In the dream, he was covered in blood, unconscious, and clutching something tightly to his chest.I closed my eyes and forced myself to take a deep breath of the salty Sicilian sea air, then slowly exhaled. The lingering panic and the frantic racing of my heart finally began to subside."Bad dream?"A man's light laugh came from the doorway.I looked up and saw Dante leaning against the doorframe, one hand casually in the pocket of his trousers. His light green eyes, a trait from his Spanish grandmother, caught the Mediterranean light, shining like chips of peridot."Our

The Appalachian Mountains coiled around the lawless land like a coarse noose.Lorenzo stepped out of the Agusta helicopter. Looking at the desolate mining area and abandoned trailer parks, he couldn't imagine what would have happened if he hadn't come today.Would the real Ava have been left to rot in this hell for the rest of her life? The propeller blades whipped up a fierce wind, making Lorenzo's cashmere coat flap wildly. It revealed the platinum heirloom pendant on his wrist, its cracks sealed with gold.It was the one Ava had supposedly broken by accident, the one he had sent to Geneva overnight for repair. If you didn't look closely, you would hardly notice the faint crack on the back.He raised his wrist and pressed his lips lightly to the crack. "Isabella, my Principessa. Just wait for me a little longer. I will go through hell and high water, but I will never let you go."Behind him, two bodyguards dragged a bruised and swollen Bruno out of the helicopter."Ouch—"Bruno was a
