Chapter 313

Author: Aurora Wells
Faced with Nicholas’s blunt question, Sharon gave a wry smile. “You really need to ask why I’m still single? Don’t you already know?”

Nicholas frowned. “You’re thirty and still not married. Don’t wait for me. I’m destined to become one of those untouchable legends.”

Sharon stared at the man in front of her—handsome, disheveled, and maddeningly difficult.

She asked quietly, “Is it because of your parents? And Evelyn? Is that why you won’t settle down?”

Nicholas froze.

He hadn’t expected her to see through him so easily.

A second later, he scoffed. “Stop asking. I just don’t want to get married, and I won’t lead you on. Don’t pull this kind of thing on me, or we won’t even stay friends.”

Sharon knew him well enough by now. That was just how he was—hardheaded and guarded to the core.

She let out a sigh. “Alright, fine. I’ll give dating someone else a shot. Wouldn’t want to become someone you find annoying.”

Nicholas narrowed his eyes. “When did I ever say you annoyed me?”

The words were b

Nicholas sputtered, "You… you…" He repeated the word a few times but never managed to follow it up with a proper sentence. My eyes stung with tears. "You don’t want me to come home, is that it? Just say it!"My words hit him square in the chest. He opened his mouth but couldn’t form a single response. Feeling frustrated, he ran both hands through his hair. "You can’t move back. The house… just.. no. You can’t."That was it.I broke down crying.Ever since we reunited as siblings, he never once suggested I come home. And I’d been too afraid to ask. So, I’d kept living like some stray, crashing at Miles’ place like I didn’t have a family of my own.The moment Nicholas saw me cry, he panicked. "Don’t cry! Eve, come on, don’t cry///I’m not saying you can’t come back, it’s just… not the right time! You… you’re unbelievable sometimes…"He started frantically rummaging around the car, shoving tissues at me one after another.I ignored him and kept crying like it was my job. That only m

Out on the terrace, Nicholas paced back and forth, smoking nonstop, agitation clear in his eyes.Sharon walked over and snatched the cigarette from his fingers, scolding him lightly. "Smoking again? Didn’t you say you were quitting?"Nicholas snapped, "Don’t bother me about smoking."With his disheveled hair and furious expression, he looked like a lit match ready to explode.Sharon instinctively glanced behind her. She saw me and Dolly talking. I looked dejected, picking up my phone only to set it back down again, while Dolly tried to comfort me.Sharon sighed, closed the glass door to the terrace, then walked over to Nicholas. She asked softly, "What’s going on? Is it about Miles and Evelyn?"Nicholas let out a sharp breath. "No. I don’t have time to care about the two of them right now. But I did warn Miles—if he can’t marry my sister, I’ll make him pay."A flicker of menace passed through his gaze.He added, "Turns out, Miles got played by his mother again. She brought over that

I was afraid the mood would suddenly grow tense. A wave of unease swept through me. Miles was always elusive when it came to his whereabouts, but I was never worried. There were plenty of things on my plate anyway. Still, my brother's sudden arrival made this business trip feel different from the rest. I frowned. “Brother, did Miles tell you where he was going? Or how long he’d be away?” Nicholas scratched his head in frustration. “No. He just called and asked me to keep an eye on you for the next few days. I heard you were here with Sharon, so I dropped everything and came. But why wouldn’t he give you a heads-up about the trip?” He was clearly upset. So much so that he put down his knife and fork, suddenly losing his appetite for the steak I’d made. Sharon brought over a fresh plate of steak and noticed the strange tension between the three of us. “What’s going on?” she asked. Nicholas grumbled, “Nothing. I’m going out for a smoke.” Then he turned and left. Sharo

I shot her a glare. “You already said Kira’s an idiot. Why would I bother arguing with her? And as for Linda, she never did anything to hurt me. Why would I fight her?”Sharon chuckled. “Alright, alright. Don’t worry, Eve. Miles would never go for someone like Linda.”My eyes lit up for a split second and then dimmed just as fast. “How can you be so sure?”Sharon gave me a knowing wink. “I just know. We went to school together, remember? That type of girl was never his style.”Suddenly, I remembered something Miles had once said about Linda. The next thing I knew, I burst out laughing. When the laughter faded, I realized Dolly was staring at me like I’d completely lost it.“I wasn’t laughing,” I stammered. “I mean, I didn’t mean to...”Dolly turned to Sharon. “She’s gone. Look at her, grinning like a fool. Honestly, I think she’s more like Linda than she wants to admit.”Sharon blinked playfully. “Even if she were, Miles still wouldn’t fall for her.”Something about her tone made my ea

At those words, several heads in the boutique turned her way.The atmosphere shifted—awkward, almost stifling. It was a little too easy for her to be generous with someone else’s gift.Sharon’s brows creased ever so slightly. “Kira, that bag isn’t exactly cheap. Maybe take a look at the other styles instead.”She kept her tone polite, but the message was clear. The sales associates nearby all kept quiet, pretending to be busy.Kira, oblivious, didn’t seem to think she’d said anything out of line. She glanced at me and added, “Sharon, if you’re going to give it away so easily, why not pass it to Miss Lee instead? At least that way, you’ll recover the cost and can order another one.”Sharon’s expression darkened. “I went through a lot to get this bag—it’s not something I’d just pass on. And besides, do you even know what Miss Lee actually wants?”It was obvious Sharon was starting to lose her patience, but Kira either didn’t notice or chose not to.She seemed determined to block me from

Linda caught me staring and gave a soft smile. “Miss White, I think we could actually be good friends. You seem like a really kind person.”I looked away from her overly bright gaze and gave a faint smile. “Maybe…”Dolly wedged herself in front of me, grinning at Linda. “Miss Lee, you’re stunning. It’s lovely to meet you.”She extended her hand politely.Linda returned the smile and reached out to shake her hand, but before they could touch, Kira suddenly stepped in and shoved Dolly’s hand aside with open hostility.“What do you think you’re doing? Miss Lee doesn’t know you and has no reason to.”Dolly had never liked her to begin with. After being pushed, her expression turned frosty. She gave a cold snort. “Wow, Miss Kira, you really do play the lapdog role to perfection.”Kira didn’t even flinch. She looked smug. “Miss Jones, people like you—born into nothing—shouldn’t try to mingle where you don’t belong. It's embarrassing to watch.”Dolly let out a sharp laugh. “That’s rich. I ca

I grabbed Dolly. "Let’s go! That woman is Kira..."Dolly instantly perked up at the mention of Kira. She couldn’t stand her.She raised her voice, "Eve, we’re here to shop till we drop today. You can afford it, can’t you?"My face darkened. Sure enough, Kira spotted the three of us. She yanked Linda by the arm, drawing her attention.Linda glanced over, looking a bit surprised.I tried to avoid them, but it was too late. I saw Linda exchange a few words with Kira before Kira headed straight toward us.Dolly stepped up protectively, like a mother hen shielding her chick.Kira stopped in front of us and gave a condescending snort. "What a coincidence, Miss White. We meet again!"Sharon’s brows drew together slightly. She knew Miles, so naturally, she also knew Kira, who never missed a chance to name-drop her Wynn family connection.Sharon said, "Kira, what a surprise. Was that your friend just now?"Kira gave me a pointed look and said deliberately, "That was Linda Lee. Sharon, surel

A pawn?Chloe actually had the nerve to call herself a pawn?If that was what being a pawn looked like, then she was living the high life on the chessboard.I handed my phone to Sharon and Dolly for a quick look.Dolly slammed her hand on the table. "Classic manipulative flirt! This is textbook fishing-for-sympathy. "All that 'we’re just like siblings,' 'I don’t even love him,' 'I’m only staying with him to protect his pride' crap. 'I can’t bear to hurt him'—ugh, give me a break!"She made a gagging noise for emphasis.Sharon gave a cool smile. "Miss Chloe is quite the strategist."Despite the words, her eyes were full of disdain.Sharon was the embodiment of an independent woman—running a successful gallery in a cutthroat industry. She didn't get that far without a strong sense of self and a good deal of vision. She had zero respect for women like Chloe.Fuming, Dolly declared, "I’m going to expose her.""Don’t," I said. "Let her keep performing."Sharon nodded in agreement. "Eve d
