Chapter 449

Author: Aurora Wells
Dolly finally lost her patience when I stayed silent for too long.

She dragged me out of the tent and demanded, “What’s going on? Spit it out already. I still have rich housewives to flatter.”

Left with no choice, I told her what I saw.

She frowned. “That’s it? You think one of the models is someone Miles knows? Come on, no way. These models are all from out of town.”

She peeked back into the tent and muttered, “Not a single pretty one in sight. They all look like walking skeletons.”

I wanted to laugh but couldn’t shake my unease. “But the way he looked at them was like he recognized someone.”

Dolly rolled her eyes. “Maybe he did. Or maybe one of them just looked familiar. Relax, Eve. If you ever have a love rival, she’d be someone like Miss Linda Lee—a polished socialite type.

“And haven’t you noticed? Ever since she realized Miles wasn’t interested in her, she’s completely disappeared.”

I blinked. “Why would she disappear?”

Dolly gave me a look of utter exasperation. “Because her fa

Marsha narrowed her eyes at her, her expression growing sharper. “What are you doing here?”Amy looked startled by the question, completely thrown off. She stammered, unable to form a coherent answer.Miles stepped forward. “Mom, Amy’s working part-time as a model tonight. You used to hold her when she was little, remember?”Marsha let out a cold laugh, her usual pride and aloofness coming through in full force.“I’m too old to remember insignificant things like that,” she said coolly. Then she added, “Miles, Evelyn, come with me. A few of the ladies inside have been asking to see you both.”I quickly stepped up and took her arm. “Of course, Madam Marsha. You’re the star of tonight’s event. Everyone’s waiting to take photos with you.”A smile finally returned to her face. She patted my hand, then said meaningfully, “You really are a well-bred young lady. It’s not the same as those from humbler backgrounds—you carry yourself with grace and poise, and people naturally warm to you. “Mil

Miles stood up, his voice low. “Amy?”The girl stepped forward, her voice trembling. “Y-yes. It’s me. I’m Amy. Do you still remember me, sir?”Miles froze for a couple of seconds, as if he couldn’t quite believe it.He stepped closer, studying the girl in front of him with quiet intensity. It was only then that I realized she was one of the models we’d hired—tall and willowy. To be honest, it wasn’t surprising I hadn’t noticed her earlier. She looked painfully ordinary. Around five-foot-five, deeply tanned skin, long arms, flat-chested.Her face was oval-shaped, and her features were soft and unremarkable—the kind of face that didn’t stand out on its own, but under heavy makeup, gave makeup artists a lot to work with. That was exactly why this type of model was common in small-scale shows—cost-effective and highly adaptable to styling. After taking a closer look, the wariness I’d felt earlier faded, replaced by confusion.Miles studied her in silence before finally asking, “Where hav

Sitting beside Miles, I felt the unease that had been gripping my chest finally begin to ease.He gently ran his fingers through the hair at my back, eyes half-closed as he gazed out at the Highridge skyline.Maybe it was just my imagination, but he seemed quieter than usual, more distant, like something was weighing on him. Before I could stop myself, I asked, “Miles, is something on your mind?”He blinked out of his thoughts. “No, nothing.”After a pause, he added, “It’s just been a while since I let myself relax like this.”He turned to look at me. “You must be tired, huh?”I shook my head. “Not really. Just… nervous. I kept thinking I’d screw it all up. But I guess I didn’t.”Miles smiled. “Even if you had, it’s no big deal. We’d just host another one.”I laughed. “Dolly said if I was really worried, I should just make you walk the runway. That way, nothing could go wrong.”Miles chuckled too, then pulled me into his arms. The night around us felt especially gentle—maybe because it

The lights in the venue dimmed, and as the music shifted, the models began making their long-awaited entrance.Under the interplay of light and shadow, the brand showcase came to life in a dazzling display that drew gasps from the crowd. I saw guests lifting their phones to snap photos and record videos.I let out a breath, finally easing the tension that had been coiled in me for days.Running a brand was exhausting. And this wasn’t even a major commercial runway show—just a boutique showcase. I couldn’t imagine how draining a full-scale fashion week production would be.The past few days of coordinating logistics, chasing down details, and pulling everything together had me breaking into cold sweats just thinking about it.At that moment, the first segment of the runway was coming to an end, and per the program, it was time for me to go onstage and say a few words.I stood, ready to head backstage, but my dress hem caught on something.I glanced over at Miles, just as the last thre

I racked my brain but couldn’t figure out who it might’ve been. That quick glimpse I caught didn’t look like Chloe at all and she had no reason to sabotage the brand event. With those thoughts still circling, I drifted off to sleep. The next morning, I was jolted awake by the alarm. Glancing at the time, I quickly got up to wash and get ready before rushing to the company.Dolly was already hard at work, and I immediately joined her. I was so caught up in the chaos, I didn’t even have time to mention last night’s incident. The day flew by in a blur. By evening, the guests began arriving, dressed to the nines. This wasn’t a sales-driven showcase, it was more about presence and style, so the atmosphere felt relaxed and elegant.Soft music played in the background. Delicate hors d'oeuvres, fine wines, and colorful cocktails were laid out across a beautifully arranged buffet. Guests gathered to chat and take photos, bathed in the warm glow of the venue lighting. At six, Miles arrived
