CHAPTER 2 The Weight of Refusal

The walk across the Crown Chamber lasted a hundred years and no time at all — the way falling does, I imagine, if you're conscious enough to notice it happening.

Five hundred people held their breath around me. I could feel their attention the way you feel weather change: something enormous gathering just out of sight, waiting to see which direction it would break. Whatever happened next, this room would remember exactly where it had been standing.

I climbed the six steps to the dais.

Up close, Darius smelled expensive and wrong. Mountain leather, old silver, and beneath both of those, something clinical I couldn't name — a hospital smell, dressed up in cologne. My wolf stirred in her sleep, uneasy. She knew this man. She had wrapped herself around him in the dark for three years and called it safety. But scent doesn't lie the way people do, and wrongness had just woken something in her that safety never had.

Seraphina stood at his right, one hand resting on the arm of what should have been my throne, watching us both with the polite patience of a woman who has already won and is simply waiting for the room to catch up.

"Your Majesty." I kept my voice low. The chamber had gone quiet enough to hear breathing. "You sent for me."

Darius rose. He had three inches on me and shoulders that had once made me feel like nothing in the world could reach me. Today he looked like a door mid-swing, and I couldn't yet tell which way it meant to close.

"Before this council, before the five Houses, I owe you a question."

He let the silence stretch. It was, I noted distantly, a very good silence — the kind a man rehearses.

"Am I your mate, Elara Vale?"

The question arrived backward, and it took me a moment to understand why it bothered me more than the obvious version would have. Not Do you accept my claim. Not Will you stand beside me. He had turned the whole ceremony around so that I would be the one confirming him — naming him chosen, in front of everyone, in the oldest language my body knew.

I thought of Mara's face over the wand. Two lines. Two heartbeats.

I thought of his mouth on my shoulder last month, promising a future he had apparently already sold to someone else.

I thought of white roses, tightening like a hand around Seraphina's throat.

I reached into my pocket. Five hundred pairs of eyes followed the movement as if I'd drawn a blade. When I pulled the wand free, Darius's face lost every trace of color it owned.

"I reject your bond." My voice carried further than I expected it to. "Before this assembly, I formally refuse your claim. You are no longer bound to House Vale through me. I am no longer bound to you through anything at all."

The rejection tore through me exactly the way they warn young wolves it will — like teeth, like silver, like dying in miniature. I felt the bond scream as it severed and forced my spine straight through it, because I would be damned if I gave this room the satisfaction of watching me fold.

Darius's shock curdled into something darker. Not at me.

At the wand.

"Is that—"

"Pregnant." I finished it for him. "With twins, according to a physician who has no reason to lie to either of us. Congratulations, Your Majesty. House Vale will provide your heirs whether or not it's given a crown."

I held the wand higher, so the whole chamber could watch the candlelight find those two silver lines.

The panic on his face was real — the specific, unrehearsed panic of a man watching his own script get taken out of his hands. He hadn't known. Someone had made very sure of that. And that someone was standing to his right, wearing his onyx, smiling like a woman who had already banked the outcome.

"That isn't possible." His voice had gone rough. "The physicians said—"

"The physicians lied. Or somebody made certain they would."

Around us, the whispering had already begun its slow curdle into faction — scandalized here, delighted there, and everywhere else the particular hunger of people who have just watched history change direction and want, more than anything, to say they saw it happen.

Seraphina's smile did not so much as flicker.

Darius stepped toward me, hand half-raised — to touch me, or to stop me, I genuinely couldn't tell which, and I suspect neither could he.

"Elara. We need to speak privately. You're not thinking clearly. The rejection alone could damage us both, if you'll just—"

"I've already decided." I kept my eyes on his. "It's formal. It's witnessed. The bond is broken, and nothing either of us says in the next five minutes is going to unbreak it."

I turned my back on the Alpha King of Avelune in front of everyone who had ever mattered to either of us, and began to walk down the steps with the wand still burning a hole in my palm.

Behind me, Seraphina murmured something too soft for the chamber to catch.

Darius's answer was not soft at all.

"Then let the record show: as of this hour, Seraphina Vale is recognized as heir to House Blackthorn, and will be crowned Luna in her sister's place."

I stopped on the fourth step.

The chamber came apart around me like something that had been waiting all morning for permission.

Seraphina came to the Temple at nine the next morning with her conditions written out on a half sheet, because she had decided never again to say anything important in that building without a copy. There were four of them.Brother Idris would take the account. Cassian would wait outside. Mara would wait with him, which Mara had not agreed to and did anyway. And I was not to speak until she had finished."If you speak," said Seraphina, "I will stop and go back to the beginning. I have been practising since yesterday and I know exactly where the beginning is. I do not know where the middle is.""I will not speak.""You will want to.""Yes," I said. "That is the price, is it not."She looked at me on the Temple steps, two days before the thirtieth, with frost on the rail and her red hands in borrowed gloves, and something in her face very nearly moved."One of them," she said.THE WITNESSING room is behind the public desk, and it is the size of a large cupboard: a table, a brazier, a win

Brother Idris gave me the address because the statute obliged him to, and he gave it in the same tone he had used for Corin, which I appreciated even while it made me want to run.Two rooms over a candle-maker's in Wick Lane. No servants listed.I did not run. A woman seen running across Moonfall three days before the thirtieth is a story by noon. I walked, with Cassian a dozen paces behind me on the other side of the street, and it took twenty-two minutes, and I spent every one of them deciding what I would say and throwing it away.Seraphina opened the door herself. Her sleeves were rolled to the elbow and her hands were red from cold water, and there was a basin on the table behind her with something grey soaking in it. Her hair was pinned up plainly, the way you pin it when nobody is going to see it, and she had not been expecting anybody, and she looked at me on her step for one long second without any expression at all."You are supposed to be dead," she said."You have seen the

My mother read the instrument by the fire above the apothecary at eleven that night, with Mara holding the lamp, and she read it twice, and when she reached the last line on the second page she put her finger under it and left it there."Well," she said. "Now it has them in it.""It always had them in it. I had not read it.""No." She did not take her finger away. "You had not." Then, after a moment, in a different voice: "Sixty-six years. She wrote their names before their mothers were born, and put them on a shelf, and went upstairs, and kept appointments for the rest of her life." My mother looked into the fire. "I sat opposite that woman at dinner for twenty years and I thought she was a little dull."Cassian, from the window, said nothing. He had not said much since the registry. He had spent the evening with his own ledger open on his knee, not writing in it, and I understood that he was reading back through it for the thing that had gone missing in the summer, to see what else

The door the Keeper opened was not the one I had come in by, and behind it there was no corridor at all. There was a stair going down into the rock, and it was nine steps, and every one of them was worn into a shallow dish in the middle, the way stone wears when a great many people have used it over a very long time and then, quite suddenly, nobody has."I will be here," the Keeper said, "when you come up. I will not be here if you call."Then she shut the door behind me, and I stood on the top step with a lamp in one hand and my grandmother's file in the other, and I counted down.Nine is not many. I want that on the record, because I had built it into something enormous on the way up the White Stair, and it was nine ordinary steps with a turn at the fifth, and at the bottom of them there was a low vaulted room about the size of my father's morning room, full of shelves. It was very cold and very dry and it smelled of nothing at all, which in a registry is the most unsettling smell t

I did not say anything in the registry office, because there were clerks going past behind me, and a woman who has just been shown her own death in public owes it to herself not to perform.I asked Idris for certified copies of both documents, witnessed and entered at the stair with the hour. He had anticipated it. They were already under the folio. Then I went out onto the Temple steps with Cassian behind me and said, without turning round, "Tell it."He told it standing up, like a man giving evidence."They carried you up at six. On a board. And at the top of the stair there was a clerk from the palace registry with a book, because there is always a clerk. He asked the old man with the lamp what to write, and the old man did not know, so the clerk wrote the word he always wrote.""Concluded.""It was the word for the beds. It went in a column." He did not look at me. "I took the pen out of his hand. I struck it with his own ruler, because I wanted it struck properly, so that nobody

The brother at the east gate of Moonfall had a ledger, a lamp, a brazier and a cold, and he was losing to all four.We came up to his lectern a little after six on the second evening, with the snow easing and the lamps of the city going on in rows below us, and he wrote my mother first without looking up. AURORA VALE, and the hour. He wrote Cassian, and looked up then, because the name Thorne makes men look up. Then he said, "And the lady," and I gave him my name, and he dipped his pen and did not use it.He ran his finger down the inside of the board, where the Temple pastes its circulars, and stopped."I cannot enter you," he said."Why not?""Because you are entered already." He turned the book round so that I could read it, and held the lamp for me, which I thought was kind.It was a printed circular from the registry of the Crown Chamber, the sort they send to every gate in the city, listing the persons who are to be struck from any roll on which they appear. There were six names
