I came home from a business trip. My daughter Anna threw herself into my arms and held up a hand-strung necklace she had clearly worked hard on. "Mommy, this is the birthday present I made for Mommy Lena. She's going to love it, right?" My heart dropped. Lena was my husband Preston's secretary. My daughter remembered her birthday. She had forgotten that today was mine. It wasn't the first time. She was always attached to Lena, hanging off her arm and asking, "Mommy Lena, when are you and Daddy taking me back to the amusement park?" Even when she ran a fever, the name she called out over and over was Mommy Lena. I corrected her, disappointed. "Anna, I'm your mommy, not Lena." But Anna pushed me away and shouted, "You're the bad mommy! I don't want you! I want Mommy Lena to be my mommy forever!" In that moment I could almost hear my own heart cracking. A second later, Preston shoved the door open. He scooped up the wailing Anna and turned on me. "Winnie, what kind of mother are you? Your child is crying like this and you can't even be bothered! "Anna's right. As a mother you're not half of what Lena is. I honestly don't know what I was thinking when I married you!" I watched their backs disappear down the hall and felt something go out in me. So this was what it had bought me. Six years ago I gave up my name and my claim as heir to the Family, all for love, and what I got in return was the contempt of my husband and my daughter. If that was how it was, then it was time for me to go home to the Family.

Once I had the papers, I called Victor. "Victor, thank you for what you did the other night."Victor laughed softly. "Miss Winnie, if you really want to thank me, why not give me a chance instead?"I didn't follow. "A chance at what?"His voice came low through the phone. "A chance to court you."I was stunned. "You... you're not joking?"He was quiet for a few seconds, then said slowly, "I've been in love with you for a long time. Do you remember pulling a boy out of the water when you were a child? That was me. When I heard our families had arranged a meeting between us, I was thrilled, and then I found out you already loved someone. When I heard you'd married, I told myself you had your happiness and I had no business disturbing it. And then I found out you weren't happy at all."Memory came flooding back. I had pulled a drowning boy out of the water as a child. I had never imagined it was Victor. The two of us had been tied together all along...But it was still too sudden. I stead

The next time I saw Preston was five days later. He stood outside the carved gates of the estate with his hair a mess, his eyes bloodshot, and stubble across a face that was never anything but clean.I was on my way to a business dinner. The black Maybach stopped at the gate and I lowered the window halfway, showing the black iris pin on my couture gown, the pin that said Gambino heir.Preston's eyes lit up the second he saw me. He stumbled forward and stopped at the car, his voice ragged. "Winnie! You're finally willing to see me!"There was one pane of glass between us, which was about right for the distance between him and me that was never going to close."Preston." My voice was ice. "You have two days left to sign the divorce papers voluntarily."Then, without waiting for him to speak, I raised the window and told the driver to go.In the mirror I watched him run after the car for a long time. His hair was wild, his tie was hanging loose, and he looked like a stray.Preston, isn't

That day, after everyone had gone, Preston ran outside and caught only the black iris on the back of a car already pulling away. He'd heard about it, back when he lived in Sicily. The black iris belonged to the Gambino Family and no one else.Nobody dared imitate it.Once he remembered that, he started to doubt himself. Was Winnie actually the Gambino heir? The thought alone put him on edge.To settle it, he called a private investigator named Pete."Find me everything on the Gambino Family in Sicily. All of it."The Gambino Family was secretive and vast, but the basics weren't hard to turn up.Pete got back to him quickly."Mr. Hale, I found that Don Charles has exactly one daughter, named Winnie. A few years ago, around the time the Don was preparing to hand over the succession, she left home. Not long ago the Gambino Family announced that his daughter had returned."Preston held on to one last thread of hope. "Do you have a photograph?"Pete sent one over. The photo showed a young w

After hours on the road.I was finally back on ground I knew. Sicily.Six years away, and coming back felt warmer than I had words for.The sun came up, and the first light landed on me and soaked in like my soul was starting over.I watched the car turn in through the estate gates, took a breath, and pushed everything rising in me back down. The black Maybach came to a stop in front of the main house.Stanley had barely opened the door before I was out of the car.A few steps in I saw a man standing straight-backed in front of the heavy carved doors. He wore a black suit cut exactly to him, hands clasped behind his back. The years had left faint lines at his temples, and they did nothing at all to soften the weight a man carries when he has been at the top for a very long time. That was Charles Gambino. He was the mafia Don who controlled Sicily's underworld and its financial arteries, a name that made half the region flinch. He was also my father, who had never loved anything the way
