Chapter 4

Author: FireFox
The next second.

A wall of big men in black poured into the house and formed two lines along one side.

Preston and the rest of them jumped at the sight.

"Who... who are you people? Who let you into my house?" Preston mustered enough nerve to demand it of several dozen men in black.

Lena hid behind him with a fistful of his shirt, shaking a little.

But I watched all of it and felt nothing but calm.

Then an elderly gentleman in a tailcoat came through the ranks at an unhurried pace.

Under the stunned eyes of everyone in the room, he stopped in front of me, bent at the waist, and spoke with perfect respect. "Miss Winnie, the Don sent me personally to bring you home."

When he finished, dozens of voices came behind him. "Welcome home, Miss Winnie!"

My eyes moved over all of them. "Stanley, thank you. All of you."

Stanley was the Family's butler, and he'd watched me grow up.

There was more weather on him than there had been six years ago, when I left.

Stanley kept the respectful smile on his face. "Miss Winnie, it's our duty."

Beside us, Preston stared at me. "Winnie, what is this? Why are they calling you that? What are you to these people?"

Before I could answer, the smile left Stanley's face and he turned to Preston, his voice flat. "Miss Winnie is the heir of the Gambino Family, the largest mafia Family in Sicily, and the only daughter of our Don Charles!"

Preston stood there blankly for a second, then looked at me. "Winnie, this joke isn't funny."

There was nothing like a joke on my face. "Preston, it isn't one. Everything Stanley said is true."

"Preston, don't listen to her, she's bluffing!" Lena stepped out to contradict me, grabbing his arm, absolutely certain of herself. "You told me yourself, she's a farmer's daughter. How does a woman with no name and no background suddenly become the heir of the Gambino Family? It's ridiculous!"

She saw the hesitation on his face and pushed harder. "These people are actors she hired! She paid them to put on this show. She wants you to feel guilty and come running back. She's feeding her own vanity, Preston, and no woman like that is worth this!"

Preston's expression changed at once, into disappointment and distaste.

He looked me up and down and sneered. "Winnie, I didn't think you'd go this far to get my attention. You actually came up with something this pathetic. Do you know what you look like right now? A clown!"

The line didn't get to me. It got to Stanley.

One glance from him and two men in black were on Preston, pinning him to the floor, two black barrels against the back of his head.

"Who do you think you are, that you get to say a word about Miss Winnie? Learn to keep your mouth shut or I'll make sure it never opens again!" Stanley's warning came out like a blade.

Lena watched it and shook so hard she couldn't get another word out.

I hated Preston, but I didn't want Anna to see any more of it, so I signaled Stanley to let it go.

Only then did Stanley have the two of them put the guns away.

"Miss Winnie, we can go now." Stanley turned back to me, respectful again, his voice gentle.

I nodded and started for the door. As I passed Preston I stopped and looked down at him. "You have seven days to sign the divorce papers. After that, don't say I didn't warn you."

Then I led them all out.

Once I had the papers, I called Victor. "Victor, thank you for what you did the other night."Victor laughed softly. "Miss Winnie, if you really want to thank me, why not give me a chance instead?"I didn't follow. "A chance at what?"His voice came low through the phone. "A chance to court you."I was stunned. "You... you're not joking?"He was quiet for a few seconds, then said slowly, "I've been in love with you for a long time. Do you remember pulling a boy out of the water when you were a child? That was me. When I heard our families had arranged a meeting between us, I was thrilled, and then I found out you already loved someone. When I heard you'd married, I told myself you had your happiness and I had no business disturbing it. And then I found out you weren't happy at all."Memory came flooding back. I had pulled a drowning boy out of the water as a child. I had never imagined it was Victor. The two of us had been tied together all along...But it was still too sudden. I stead

The next time I saw Preston was five days later. He stood outside the carved gates of the estate with his hair a mess, his eyes bloodshot, and stubble across a face that was never anything but clean.I was on my way to a business dinner. The black Maybach stopped at the gate and I lowered the window halfway, showing the black iris pin on my couture gown, the pin that said Gambino heir.Preston's eyes lit up the second he saw me. He stumbled forward and stopped at the car, his voice ragged. "Winnie! You're finally willing to see me!"There was one pane of glass between us, which was about right for the distance between him and me that was never going to close."Preston." My voice was ice. "You have two days left to sign the divorce papers voluntarily."Then, without waiting for him to speak, I raised the window and told the driver to go.In the mirror I watched him run after the car for a long time. His hair was wild, his tie was hanging loose, and he looked like a stray.Preston, isn't

That day, after everyone had gone, Preston ran outside and caught only the black iris on the back of a car already pulling away. He'd heard about it, back when he lived in Sicily. The black iris belonged to the Gambino Family and no one else.Nobody dared imitate it.Once he remembered that, he started to doubt himself. Was Winnie actually the Gambino heir? The thought alone put him on edge.To settle it, he called a private investigator named Pete."Find me everything on the Gambino Family in Sicily. All of it."The Gambino Family was secretive and vast, but the basics weren't hard to turn up.Pete got back to him quickly."Mr. Hale, I found that Don Charles has exactly one daughter, named Winnie. A few years ago, around the time the Don was preparing to hand over the succession, she left home. Not long ago the Gambino Family announced that his daughter had returned."Preston held on to one last thread of hope. "Do you have a photograph?"Pete sent one over. The photo showed a young w

After hours on the road.I was finally back on ground I knew. Sicily.Six years away, and coming back felt warmer than I had words for.The sun came up, and the first light landed on me and soaked in like my soul was starting over.I watched the car turn in through the estate gates, took a breath, and pushed everything rising in me back down. The black Maybach came to a stop in front of the main house.Stanley had barely opened the door before I was out of the car.A few steps in I saw a man standing straight-backed in front of the heavy carved doors. He wore a black suit cut exactly to him, hands clasped behind his back. The years had left faint lines at his temples, and they did nothing at all to soften the weight a man carries when he has been at the top for a very long time. That was Charles Gambino. He was the mafia Don who controlled Sicily's underworld and its financial arteries, a name that made half the region flinch. He was also my father, who had never loved anything the way

Preston went still. Something like shock and panic crossed his face.I thought my heart had gone cold enough by then, and it still moved a little at the sight. Was he actually afraid of losing me?If Preston had asked me to stay or shown any regret, I might have left some thread of what we'd been intact. But a second later Lena came around the corner carrying Anna, and that was the end of that. She saw me standing off against Preston with a suitcase at my feet, and she understood immediately.Lena rushed at me with Anna still in her arms and grabbed my wrist, eyes streaming as she begged. "Mrs. Hale, I was wrong, I really was. Please don't be angry with Preston over me. I grew up in an orphanage, I've never known what it feels like to be loved, and Preston only threw me that party because he felt sorry for me. If I'd known it would come to this, I'd rather have spent my birthday alone in my rented room!"I looked at that performance on her face. How could a man as sharp as Preston not
