Chapter 1

Author: Shirley
On my wedding day, my fiancé, Ryder Conti, cast me aside at the church for his mistress and the bastard in her belly.

Three years later, I returned to the States with my husband. At a private airstrip, I ran into Ryder, who had the gall to offer me a job as a cook for his mistress's son.

He had no idea that the woman he dismissed as a nobody was the most respected Donna in the entire underworld.

A strong wind whipped across the private airstrip.

In the distance, a group of men stood beside a few black SUVs. The man at the front was holding a sign.

The Italian word "Tesoro" was written on it.

It was Zayn's pet name for me, a word he loved to whisper in my ear during our nights in Sicily.

As I got closer, I saw that the person holding the sign was none other than my ex-fiancé, the Conti family's Capo, Ryder.

He and a few of his men, their arms covered in tattoos, were craning their necks to look toward the jet's stairs.

"Boss, isn't that Emilia? The one who cried and begged you not to leave her back then?"

Ryder was stunned for a moment when he saw me, but he quickly composed himself, a smug look spreading across his face.

"I knew it. Sooner or later she'd hit rock bottom and come crawling back."

"This time she held out for quite a while!"

The men erupted in a chorus of jeers. "I thought she had some pride! Turns out she's just come crawling back to kiss the boss's feet, hasn't she?"

"Look at that black dress, not even a brand logo on it. Probably some cheap crap from an outlet mall!"

"I wonder how she even got onto this private airstrip. Maybe she's on the cleaning crew?"

It was no wonder they thought that. In the past, to please Ryder, I would wear short skirts and squeeze my feet into ill-fitting high heels, no matter how cold it was.

But I had no need for that anymore.

Because of my pregnancy, Zayn forbade me from wearing anything restrictive.

This seemingly simple black silk gown was custom-made by a master artisan in Italy.

These clueless goons wouldn't know quality if it slapped them in the face.

But I understood from their words. They had no idea I was the one they were sent to collect.

Seeing me stand still, one of the men, who had once received a favor from me, tried to smooth things over.

"Emilia, good to see you back. To be honest, the boss hasn't completely forgotten you all these years…"

The smile on Ryder's face froze for a second before he cut the man off. "You're back just in time. Carmela's son has been a picky eater lately. He needs a personal cook."

"I know you've always been good in the kitchen, and you should be able to take good care of the boy. The job's yours."

The same condescending look, as if he were bestowing some great charity upon me.

Too bad I was no longer the spineless woman who swallowed every insult and compromised for his sake.

Just as I was about to tell them to get lost, Ryder's phone rang. It was Carmela.

When she heard I was going to be their family cook, she couldn't hide her excitement.

"Emilia, don't you dare blame Ryder. He's only arranging this to take care of you. After all, you disappeared for three years. Who knows what kind of life you've been living?"

"It's better to stay by our side, to have a roof over your head."

"Don't worry, no one will look down on you for taking care of the heir to the Conti and Rossi families."

Three years, and Carmela was still the same spiteful, vicious woman, just as capable of making my stomach turn.

Neither of them had changed one bit. A match made in heaven, truly.

The goons around them immediately started chiming in.

"Emilia, what are you waiting for? Thank the boss! This is a sweet gig with room and board!"

"A chance to walk through the Conti family's door is a damn sight better than living on the streets!"

I touched the family ring hidden beneath my sleeve, about to reveal my identity when Ryder stepped closer.

"Emilia, don't be ungrateful. I made a necessary sacrifice for the Family, and you just abandoned me. Now you come crawling back after hitting rock bottom..."

"You won't grow up if you don't learn the hard way."

My heart clenched at his words.

He still thought I would be overcome with shame, that I would finally bow my head and admit I was wrong.

So, in his mind, promoting his pregnant mistress and kicking me to the curb was just a "necessary sacrifice."

The boy who had once carried me five blocks through a storm to find a pharmacy was long dead.

The Ryder who swore to make me the happiest woman in the world was nothing but a joke.

Fine. Let all those foolish memories die right here.

After all, I was carrying Zayn's second child. Our children were the true legacy.

[Zayn's POV]Three in the morning. In the bedroom of the Vettori estate, the curtains were drawn tight, letting in no light. But I didn't need light.I could trace Emilia's silhouette perfectly in the dark. She was sound asleep, her breathing deep and even, curled up in my arms like a trusting kitten. Her hair was tangled around my fingers, smelling faintly of vanilla. It was the scent of heaven.I didn't dare to sleep.I was afraid that if I closed my eyes, I would wake to find this was all a dream, a hopeless fantasy conjured in some damp, dark cellar. My free hand hovered an inch above the gentle swell of her stomach. Our second child was growing there.Even now, watching her sleep so unguardedly, a near-pathological fear born from finally having everything I ever wanted made my heart hammer against my ribs.Emilia didn't know. The photos she found in the study last night were just the tip of the iceberg.Fifteen years ago, on a rainy night in Brooklyn.I had just won a life-or-deat

It wasn't hard to guess what Carmela's dying promise with Ryder was about. It was the final, desperate act of a mother. After swallowing all those diamonds, her internal organs were shredded. She wouldn't have survived the night. She must have used the location of her son, or her own life, to buy Ryder a sliver of a chance to escape.Because she knew that only if Ryder lived would her son have a chance to eat.The door to the hospital room was thrown open. Two figures, one large and one small, burst in, scattering the sterile scent of the room. Before Bella could react, Zayn had squeezed her into a corner."Emilia..." Zayn's voice was on the verge of a sob, his usually decisive eyes now webbed with bloodshot veins. He gently cupped my face. "Where does it hurt? Tell me, where does it hurt?"Luca clung to the edge of the bed, his eyes red. He wanted to touch me but didn't dare, looking utterly heartbroken."Mama, the bad people hurt you... It's all my fault..."My heart melted into a pu

Zayn's disregard and the crowd's laughter completely shattered Ryder's defenses. He stood there, his fists clenched so tight his knuckles cracked, but he didn't dare act out in front of Zayn.Luca peeked out from behind Zayn's leg, his delicate face filled with a coldness and mockery that defied his age."Cook? Are you still dreaming?""My Mama is the Donna of the Vettori family. She is my Papa's princess.""Do you think you're worthy of having her lift a finger for you?"The little boy's voice was child-like, but every word was a knife, twisting precisely in Ryder's most painful wound."Mama will only have two babies, me and my sister.""And you think her son is worthy of being my Mama's child? I bet he'd be cursed just by the thought."Luca pinched his nose in disgust, looking Ryder up and down as if he were something filthy."Besides, you reek of poverty. It's suffocating.""You'd better not corrupt your precious son. Or will you teach him to be a spineless loser who uses women to g

I sighed and pulled my hand back."Alright, you've scared the doctor half to death."Hearing my words, the doctor looked as if he'd been granted a pardon. He wiped the sweat from his brow and reported to Zayn with a trembling voice."Don, the Donna's hand has a soft tissue contusion that simply needs rest.""I'll use the best medicine, I guarantee there will be no scar."Zayn said nothing. His silence was like that of a volcano about to erupt. Only I knew this was the prelude to his rage.Beside us, Ryder was already drenched in sweat. He never could have imagined that the Emilia he had trampled underfoot had transformed into the queen of the underworld, the Donna of the Vettori family.Seeing how close Zayn and I were, a crazed spark of jealousy, fueled by some unknown courage, flashed in Ryder's eyes. But he had just enough sense left to know that for the Conti family to survive, he had to swallow his pride and grovel like a dog.Zayn stood beside me, his gaze sweeping across the roo

The Soldatos who had followed Ryder at the airport and mocked me were now shaking like leaves in a storm. They had to grip the edges of nearby tables just to stay upright. The pathetic "lapdog" Emilia they had ridiculed for three years, the "broke" castoff they had scorned, was actually the revered Donna of the Vettori family. If looks could kill, Zayn's icy gaze would have slaughtered them ten thousand times over.My tears were still falling as Zayn gently patted my back. But some fools seem to have a death wish, determined to walk right into the line of fire."God, how tacky."A shrill female voice cut through the tension. It was Tessa, Carmela's hanger-on in the short pink dress. She clearly hadn't grasped the situation, or she was just a complete idiot.Tessa sauntered forward, swaying her hips, and pointed at Zayn and me with contempt."Emilia, where did you hire these two actors?""Not a bad performance, even roping a kid into it. Want me to have Carmela hook you up with an agent

Luca's face, usually a stoic mask much like Zayn's, was now a canvas of pure terror. His childlike cry of "Mama," though soft, was clear enough to shock the entire ballroom into silence.Luca's small hands clutched the velvet of my gown, his tear-streaked face buried in the crook of my neck, his whole body trembling. The room was dead silent.Ryder's outstretched hand froze in mid-air. The look on his face was priceless. He looked as if he'd been hit over the head with a sledgehammer. He stared in disbelief from the family's precious heir back to me, a pathetic heap on the floor.I gritted my teeth against the pain and looked at my little knight.Luca's embrace was soft and smelled faintly of milk, instantly soothing the darkness in my heart. Before I could speak, Luca's small, trembling hands gently lifted my left hand.It was a mangled mess of flesh and blood. The once-brilliant pigeon's blood ruby was now cracked by the stiletto heel, a horrifying sight swimming in my blood."Mama..
