Chapter 4

Author: Peanut
Rowan saw what was happening, came down from the altar, and spoke to Bryce and me. "The second blood moon rises in ten minutes. The Moon Goddess favors the two of you as fated mates. I've lived a long time, and I've never seen two blood moons in a single day before. If you miss this one, you really will be waiting until next year."

Bryce reached out and caught my hand.

He had just opened his mouth when Emily started whining and rubbing her stomach. "I'm starving. I've been out here all night with you two and I've got nothing left in me. I say we eat first and do the marking ceremony after."

Bryce looked at me, torn. "How about I take everyone to get some food first? They've been standing out here this whole time to bless us. Even if the marking works later, it wouldn't feel right without their blessing. Why don't we just wait until next year, when everyone's in better shape?"

I yanked my hand out of his and stared at him coldly. I asked him one last time. "Today. Are you going to mark me or not?"

Bryce's brows drew together and his eyes filled with irritation. "Do you have to make this hard on everybody? I've said I'll mark you. The Luna of my pack will never be anyone but you. Isn't that enough?"

Looking at him, I suddenly laughed. So I really had been fooling myself for three whole years. He had never once intended to mark me.

And now I didn't need him to. I nodded. "Fine. Next year, then."

Bryce blinked. "Ivy, don't be like this, you..."

He didn't finish, because Emily pulled him away.

A little later Emily came over to comfort me. "You shouldn't push Bryce like that. You should give in, do what he says. You two have been together three years. If he doesn't mark you, no one in any pack will want you."

I looked at her with contempt. "No one will want me? You're my cousin, and you stand with outsiders and pile on me. Or is it that you don't want Bryce to mark me either?"

Emily shook her head hard, tears running down her cheeks. "How can you think that of me? I'm saying it for your own good."

Everyone was saying things for my own good. Not one of them ever asked what I wanted!

I was about to say more when Bryce came back.

He dragged Emily off toward the crowd. "Ivy isn't thinking straight right now. She needs to cool off on her own."

Watching them all walk away, Rowan looked at me with real regret. "This is the most sacred blood moon in ten years. The last one was the Moon Goddess's blessing on the Silverwolf pack. It would be a shame to waste it."

Then, out of nowhere, a familiar voice cut in. "Who says it's going to be wasted? This is a gift the Moon Goddess is giving me."

It was Vaughn. He crossed to me in a few strides, dropped to one knee, and slid the wolf-fang ring his grandmother had passed down, the ring that marked a Luna, onto my finger. "Ivy, let me mark you. My Luna."

Above us the moon shifted from pale gold to red. Vaughn rose and came close, and his canines broke my skin...

We became mates, bound to each other and no one else. Vaughn, still riding the high of it, took a photo of the two of us and another of the wolf-fang ring on my hand, and posted them online.

At the same moment, Emily was staring at her phone screen in disbelief.

She looked up at Bryce and the others, her voice shrill and shaking a little. "Ivy's been marked!"

Two months later, Vaughn and I held a grand mating ceremony in the Silverwolf pack. He had set the whole place up himself, the sheer drapes, the tower of glasses, the balloons, every corner of it romantic.Vaughn wore a black suit that made him look even taller, and I wore a silver mermaid gown, and he led me by the hand into the middle of a crowd of wolves in formal dress. "Let me introduce her. My wife, Ivy. Luna of the Silverwolf pack."They stood there with drinks in their hands, looking at me warmly. "So this is the Luna Vaughn could never stop thinking about? She's beautiful. And she's the daughter of the Crimson Eye pack, so our two packs never have to fight again. She's an angel."A few young wolves shouldered their way in from the edge of the crowd, looked at me, and then turned to Vaughn, teasing. "Vaughn, congratulations. Dreams do come true."Vaughn pressed his lips together, tipped his head back, and drank half a glass in one go. He was in a very good mood.Another one gri

Early the next morning, Vaughn and I had barely left the Crimson Eye pack when we saw Bryce. There were dark circles under his eyes, he was still in yesterday's clothes, and he was gripping a jewelry box.He came forward the moment he saw me, his voice hoarse. "Ivy, I didn't sleep all night. I was waiting for you."I frowned at him. "There's nothing between us now. Please leave." He took a step forward and I took a step back. His fist opened and closed. "Ivy, I made Nolan delete the video on his phone. I left their group chat too, and I won't bring any of them along when we go out anymore. And I had it out with Emily. She says she'll find a chance to apologize to your face."If he had said all of that yesterday, I probably would have been moved. I probably would have cried with relief. But it was too late. None of it could touch me anymore.I kept my voice flat. "I don't need you to do any of that."Bryce stared at me with regret, his hand tightening around the box, and the next second

Bryce started to say something else, and Vaughn shoved him hard to the ground, then took my hand and walked me away from the altar.Bryce sat where he'd fallen, looked up at Rowan, and laughed at himself. "Shaman. You told me Ivy was my fated mate."Rowan walked over to him and shook his head helplessly. "Ivy was the perfect mate the Moon Goddess gave you. You didn't know how to treasure her, and you made her give you up.""Is there still a chance for me? Can I win her heart back?"Rowan sighed. "Bryce, the Moon Goddess gave you a chance to win Ivy back, but Vaughn is the one who took it."Watching Rowan walk away, Bryce slammed his fist into the ground in despair and let out a mournful howl. After we left the altar, Vaughn and I went back to the Crimson Eye pack.My father's eyes lit up the second he saw Vaughn, and then he shook his head, ashamed. "Vaughn, about joining with the Silvermane pack to attack the Silverwolf pack, I'm sorry. But Ivy had set her heart on Bryce, and as her f

Emily stared at him, refusing to believe what she was hearing. "You're the one who wanted to use the Crimson Eye pack. You're the one who said you didn't want to mark Ivy anytime soon. Dragging things out tonight was your idea too. We were just going along with you."Bryce's expression changed, and he nodded. "That's right, it was my idea, but at the second blood moon you were the ones who hauled me off, or I'd have marked Ivy already. So the ones who owe an apology are you, not Ivy."Emily laughed coldly. "Why should I apologize to her? She just slapped me and challenged me to a fight. Why should I be the one to bow my head?"The others turned on Bryce too, unwilling. "We did everything the way you wanted. You're the one who didn't want to mark Ivy, and now that Vaughn has marked her, you're shoving all the blame onto us? You want to win Ivy back, Bryce, but who said you get to do it by stepping on us?"Bryce moved forward, shoulders hunched, teeth bared at all of them. "Nobody who do

Emily watched all of it, then turned to Vaughn. "Vaughn, do you actually think Ivy let you mark her because she likes you? She's just spiting Bryce. A little coaxing from him and she'll break the mate bond with you."Vaughn looked at her and let out a cold, mocking laugh. "Why Ivy let me mark her is not something you need to explain on her behalf."Emily rounded on me, unwilling to back down. "Do you dare tell Vaughn what you did over these three years to get Bryce to mark you? Eating silver dust and wolfsbane to force a shift, nearly getting killed by a rogue, running to the Silvermane pack with no thought for your own safety just to find Bryce. Did you know all that, Vaughn? The one you marked isn't a good Luna. She's the hanger-on Bryce didn't want."I backhanded her across the face. Emily staggered, and her cheek swelled fast. "That slap is your cousin teaching you to keep your mouth clean. I put up with you following Bryce around and picking at me because you were young. From toda

Everyone turned to her. Nolan grabbed her phone and zoomed in on the picture. "That's obviously edited. That's the wolf-fang ring the Vaughn family passes down to its Luna. How would it end up on Ivy's hand?"Someone nearby backed him up at once. "Ivy loves Bryce too much. She'd never let anyone else mark her. She probably posted it the second we left, just to make Bryce jealous."Emily stared at the screen, going paler and paler. "But Vaughn is the one who posted it."Nolan still wouldn't give it up. "So what if Vaughn posted it? Maybe the Crimson Eye pack offered him something to help Ivy get under Bryce's skin."Bryce snatched the phone out of Nolan's hand. In the photo I was leaning back against Vaughn, the hand at my side wearing the wolf-fang ring, and there wasn't a trace of editing anywhere on it. Bryce's fingers tightened around the phone, and he used Emily's phone to call my number. But I didn't pick up. I let it ring until it cut off by itself. He called again, and by then h
