Chapter 1

The moment those words left my mouth, the thrill of revenge roared through me like wildfire. It tasted sweeter than I ever imagined.

Emilio Nolan blushed up to his ears. His entire body went rigid, and his pupils dilated.

"Harry, he..." he started, but I cut him off with a kiss.

The taste of alcohol mixed with the faint cedarwood scent that always clung to him, and I let it pull me under. I didn't want to hear whatever he was saying. I only wanted this moment of surrender to drown the pain that was threatening to shatter me.

That night was utter madness. I slept so deeply that I didn't stir until frantic knocking dragged me out of sleep the next morning.

My fiancé, Harry Nolan, stood outside with his new girlfriend. His face was twisted with rage as he shoved at the door that refused to open.

Panic flickered through me as I glanced at the empty space beside me. The sheets were already cold. At some point, Emilio had already slipped away.

I figured that men were all the same. They left the second they got what they wanted.

I pulled on a high-necked robe to cover the marks scattered across my neck and chest, went downstairs, and opened the door.

"Julia Hardin, who told you to change the lock?" Harry barked.

During the three months he had been missing, I had lived in constant fear, too terrified to sleep alone at night. It was his younger brother, Emilio, who had changed the lock so I could feel safe.

Now Harry was suddenly back. He shoved me aside with open contempt and dragged the girl into the house.

"Why are all my cards declined? Why is every account frozen?" he demanded.

That was the second thing he had spoken to me since he arrived. Anger and accusations were all he had for me. Not once did his eyes meet mine.

The girl beside him, Violet Pierce, looked at me with unrestrained mockery.

Harry and I had been together for seven years. Finally, he couldn't be bothered to pretend anymore.

I folded my arms, lifted my chin, and stared straight at him. "You disappeared for three months without a word, and you show up now with no explanation? Who is this woman, and why are you bringing her into the home we were supposed to share?"

I didn't spare his feelings. Yet I couldn't ignore the gleaming emerald bracelet on Violet's wrist. It was the heirloom Harry's mother had left specifically for the future lady of the Nolan family.

Harry had once told me, "Only the woman who becomes my wife deserves to wear this bracelet."

Yet he had randomly given it to one of his lovers. Clearly, it wasn't as precious as he had claimed.

Harry lounged on the sofa, pulled the girl into his lap, and smiled at me with deliberate provocation. "This is Violet Pierce—my new girlfriend. Julia, seven years is a long time. If you're not tired of it, I am. Being with you is boring, and the thought of marrying you feels like a prison sentence."

"Tired? Boring?" The words froze me in place.

Seven years ago, when I was adored by everyone, he had chased me desperately. He'd get anything for me, even if it meant he had to fly across the country.

The spoiled heir, who had never cooked a day in his life, would get up at dawn every morning to make me soup and breakfast.

He had treated me so well that my heart had no room for anyone else. And now he threw it all away with a single sentence.

"Girl," Violet sneered at me, "you're old. Past your prime. What man would want that? I'm young, pretty, and fertile. If Harry wants kids, I can give him as many as he wants. You'd be a geriatric pregnancy now. The child probably wouldn't even be healthy or smart."

So, that was what Harry had cared about all along.

But hadn't he said he would give up everything in the world for me? Hadn't he once whispered he wished the world would end so only the two of us would remain?

Emilio said, "I respect your choice."That answer reassured me, and my panic melted away. While waiting for the test results, I inadvertently spotted a familiar figure in the corridor. It was Harry, who didn't look as radiant as before. His brows were tightly knitted, his face heavy with worry.Clinging to his arm was another rich heiress. This was supposedly his latest attempt to produce an heir and claw back power from Emilio.Seeing me, he called out, "Julia?"He dropped the woman's hand and hurried toward me, but Emilio turned and planted himself firmly between us.Harry didn't give up. "Julia, what's wrong? Why are you here at the hospital?"Before I could answer, a nurse arrived, handing me the test results. "Congratulations, you're pregnant! Three months along, and the baby is perfectly healthy."Harry's eyes nearly popped out of his head. "Pregnant? Julia, are you pregnant? That's impossible. We were together seven years, and you never once got pregnant."Emilio pulled

I suddenly remembered a fight I'd had with Harry years ago.It all started when I discovered the flirtatious text messages his secretary had sent him. In a fit of anger, I demanded that he fire her.He flipped out on the spot. "Don't overstep! My contacts are not for you to control! You're seriously out of your mind. Go cool off!"He told the driver to dump me on the side of the road in pouring rain and drove home alone. Emilio found me soaked to the bone, shivering, and took me home. I caught a cold and had a fever. When Emilio called Harry to let him know I was sick, I overheard Harry's mocking laughter on the other end of the line."Don't bother with her. She just loves playing the pitiful role," he sneered. "I've never heard of anyone dying from a fever. Tell her to call me when she's better."Emilio stayed up all night taking care of me. Now I had already lost count of how many times I had come home in his car. It felt like he had a perfect routine for taking care of me—a

I smiled, holding out my hand. "It's only been two months, and you've already forgotten me?"She let out a tipsy little laugh, tears shimmering in her eyes. "No, it's just you look younger and prettier. You and Harry got married, right?"I shrugged. "We broke up."She ordered a drink for me and slid it over. "Then have one on me. Cheers to getting rid of that piece of trash."She lit a cigarette and inhaled slowly. The smoke she exhaled drifted upward, covering her eyes in a thin haze. "To get that bracelet back, he called the police and accused me of theft. The amount was high, and I was looking at real prison time. Had to sell everything I owned to scrape together the bail. That bastard deserves to die."I clicked my tongue, agreeing with her. I lifted the glass and took a sip.The alcohol burned, and I coughed hard. When I looked up, Violet had already disappeared into the darkness. But the more I drank, the more wrong everything felt. My body started to heat up, and my head

"Enough!" Chad roared, slamming his cup down on the table. "How am I supposed to face the Hardin family after the disgrace you've caused?"His words were directed at Harry. He knew the whole fault lay with Harry. My laugh was loud, almost triumphant. "There's no need for explanations. The marriage alliance between our families will proceed as planned. But the man I marry will not be Harry."Harry couldn't care less about his dignity, his urgency evident as he rushed toward me. "Are you seriously going to marry Emilio? Why? What does he have that I don't?"I stood up, looking him straight in the eye. "He has everything you lack—decency, loyalty, and a heart."I took Emilio's hand and walked out of the mansion without looking back. Behind me, Emilio seemed to be in a good mood, his voice soft and happy. "So, it's settled.""Huh?" I turned around, just to meet his lips.He kissed me, whispering, "Marry me."Did I still believe in love? Not really. I spent seven years loving Harry,

Emilio continued, "I think you know how much I like you."I opened my mouth, but no sound came out.He added, "You don't have to answer me right now. I'm not going to pressure you for anything. I just don't want you to worry about my father or the inheritance or anything else. I will take care of everything."After a long silence, all I could manage was a choked "Okay".He took a spoonful of soup, now cool enough to drink, and fed it to me. The warmth spread through my chest—a kind of comfort I hadn't felt in years....Three days later, Chad Nolan sent someone to take me to the Nolan Mansion. I knew it was Harry's doing. The four of us sat in the living room. Such private matters were not for public display, so naturally, everyone else had been sent away.Chad looked eager, expecting an explanation from me. Harry's face was dark with barely contained fury. Emilio sat opposite him, perfectly composed and elegant as always.Chad cleared his throat, smiling at me. "Kid, come sit

Emilio lowered his gaze, his voice soft but oddly reassuring. "Don't bother looking it up. It was me."Harry thought he must have misheard, tilting his head. "Who? You?"He scrambled up from the floor, clutching his stomach, laughing like a madman. "Don't try to fool me here. Is it someone we know? Stop covering for Julia. I know you've always been close to her, following her around since you were little. But I'm your brother, and she is my fiancée."He stressed his tone for the last part of his words. Clearly, he had just heard Emilio's response.I curled up on the bed, wiping away the tears from my cheeks. "I'm not your fiancée anymore. We've broken up without even getting registered. I'm just me."Emilio stood in front of me, speaking calmly. "I've always liked Julia. It was my choice."Harry punched the wall, his blood staining the surface. "You're giving up everything for her? Father will disown you! Just wait!"He stormed off like a mad bull, smashing things along the way.
