I leaned back in my chair, the rush of adrenaline fading into a grim satisfaction.

That’s when I heard the sound of the front door opening.

I froze, the bottle halfway to my mouth. It was quiet, soft, like someone trying not to be noticed. I hadn’t locked the door.

I rarely did anymore. My heart gave a surprised, hard thump.

I turned slowly in my desk chair, ready for anything.

I half-expected the police, or maybe Ryan's heavy-handed security people.

Instead, Lilith walked in.

She paused just inside the doorway, holding a small, expensive leather tote bag I hadn't seen before. She was wearing the same coat she'd stormed out in, but her expression was different.

Gone was the frantic, tearful fury of her confession. She looked calm, cold and empty.

I stared at her, assessing her movements.

I was still riding the excitement of sending the report against Ryan.

Her return didn't feel like a moment of reconciliation; it felt different.
