Chapter 4

Author: Bubbles
When the potion took hold, the agony of my brain being eaten alive made me want nothing more than to die.

But I would cling to life, no matter the cost, until every last person here knew the truth.

The crowd pressed closer, every eye fixed on me, hungry to finally learn what was behind these murders.

One year ago.

The season when the apple trees bloomed.

Owen asked me to be his mate beneath a canopy of white apple blossoms.

His hands were covered in cuts and scars from forging the silver dagger.

I held his hands and looked at the wounds, my heart aching. He just smiled softly and brushed a strand of hair from my face.

"As long as it makes you happy, it's all worth it."

"Being your mate is the greatest blessing of my life."

When Alpha Elbert and Luna heard the news, they immediately threw themselves into planning the marking ceremony, practically glowing with excitement.

Three years had passed since the Alpha's recovery, and in that time the neighboring packs had grown considerably more cautious. There were even rumors that Moonlight Pack had survived its crises because it was blessed by the Moon Goddess herself, and that anyone who dared attack would face divine punishment.

For a while, no one dared make a move against Moonlight Pack.

Owen had started those rumors himself. The ordeal had forged him into something sharper, stronger.

Alpha Elbert was already beginning to hand pack affairs over to him.

Luna said: "The gemstone on the ceremonial crown absolutely must be the rarest color. And the gown, nothing less than silk."

Alpha Elbert turned to Owen. "Son, make the trip yourself. Go to the mines in the Nolan Mountains and pick out the most extraordinary gemstone you can find."

Owen nodded. He didn't even stay for dinner. He just mounted a fast horse and rode for the mountains.

The night he left.

I cooked an entire table of food with my own hands, and slipped a sedative into the wine.

Once it took effect, I used the silver dagger to deliver a killing blow to every one of them.

The generous, kindhearted Alpha.

The gentle, loving Luna.

The honest, loyal coachman.

Aunt Sandra, who made those sweet, golden apple pies.

The bright, hardworking young maid.

Every person in Owen's household. Not a single one survived.

Throughout it all, my expression was calm. My hand didn't tremble. I didn't hesitate once.

When Owen came racing back, carrying an armful of my favorite grapes,

What he found was a floor full of bodies, and me, bound hand and foot.

Blood had soaked through my white ceremonial gown, a red more vivid than the gemstone he'd brought home.

He asked me over and over, like a man losing his mind: "Why?"

I said nothing.

The Beta had me thrown into the dungeon, where they tested every form of torture the prison had to offer.

They tore out every one of my fingernails. They broke my legs and set them, then broke them again. They sliced my skin open and poured concentrated salt water into the wounds.

Even the most hardened criminals in that prison only had to glance in my direction before they broke down and confessed to their own crimes.

But I never made a sound. As if I'd lost the ability to speak.

"I told you. Salia is nothing but a twisted monster."

"She's an animal."

"Alpha, the evidence is more than sufficient to convict her of murder. This is an unforgivable crime. Give the order and have her executed."

The rage in the crowd was absolute.

The chant demanding my death echoed down the entire street.

And then, in that moment, Owen spoke.

"My father's sense of smell was a hundred times sharper than any ordinary wolf's. There's no way he wouldn't have detected a sedative in the wine. But he still drank it."

"Why would he do that? Salia, what are you and my father hiding from me?"

Owen strode toward me and seized my shoulders, his grip so tight it might have crushed bone. His eyes burned with anger, but look closer, and all you'd find was despair.

"Say something! Tell me what this is all about."

I gazed at Owen in silence.

Then blood surged up my throat and spilled from my lips, beyond my control.

Owen moved to catch me, but his eyes were pulled away by a new image forming in the air.

It was the truth behind the murders.

And the origin of every tragedy.

"Salia, there's a way to save you.""Delilah has a special potion. It can keep you alive. She says if I let her go, she'll hand it over."I stared at him."You can't let her go. She murdered your entire family."Owen clenched his jaw. Grief and fury fought across his face."You think I want to do this? I hate her just as much as you do.""If it weren't for her, my parents would still be alive. You wouldn't be like this. Every time I think about it, I want to kill her with my own hands.""But Salia, you're all I have left. If I lose you too, I don't know how to keep going."He broke down.Owen had always loved noise and company. A full table, laughter, people around him. Loneliness was the thing he feared most.Since his family died, he had carried that hatred alone through more silent nights than I could count.I knew he was just terrified of being alone. But I couldn't live with that price.I let out a slow breath and met his eyes."Delilah killed the Elberts. Owen knelt on the ground, feeling how little I weighed in his arms. I was so light it seemed like a single breath could scatter me.He lifted me and spoke to the guards without turning his head. His voice was ice."Arrest Delilah and the former Beta. Take them to the cells. I want a full interrogation.""I want every detail within a day.""And get every doctor in this pack to Salia. Now."Then he carried me away. That was the thing about Owen. He was never indecisive. When the truth was in front of him, he acted. The trouble was that hate makes people blind. So does love.Owen couldn't face what had happened to his family. Couldn't bring himself to believe that I was the one who had done it. So he chose to run. He traveled the world chasing answers, looking for any explanation that didn't require him to come to me and ask.It took him an entire year to finally face the truth. And now regret was eating him alive. If he had come sooner, would my body still be this broken? The doctors arr

The potion's memories couldn't be faked. But fragments weren't the whole truth.Blood was pooling beneath me. My face had gone white.Owen held me tight. His tears fell one by one onto the side of my neck."You have something to say, don't you?""Tell me. Whatever it is, tell me and I'll get to the bottom of it. I swear I will."Behind Owen, Delilah watched me with cold eyes. Her lips moved without sound."Don't waste your breath.""All three potions are gone. No one will ever know what's really inside your head.""The truth dies with you, and you'll rot in the ground with everyone's hatred on top of you."I smiled.I pressed my face into Owen's chest and raised what was left of my broken hand to brush his cheek. Then I yanked the coin pouch from his belt. That pouch was a gift I had given Owen. Inside it was the potion I had brought back from Roaring Valley. When I had struck my deal with the witch there, she had given me two potions. One to save Alpha Elbert's life. The other, a mirr

This was a memory buried so deep inside me that even I had nearly forgotten it existed. That was why the potion had taken so long to find it, pulling it up from the dark and laying it out in full. One year ago. After Owen left for his journey, the Alpha grew restless. He couldn't sit still, couldn't eat, couldn't sleep. I noticed something was wrong with him and went back and forth in my mind before finally going to his study.I pushed open the door and found him holding a silver dagger to his own throat.I stopped him. I wanted to go find Luna.He grabbed my arm and wouldn't let me. When I asked why, he broke down."This is my punishment," he said."The Moon Goddess let me save your life to remind me, every waking moment, that I need to atone. But I'm afraid the things I've done in this life can never be made right. Not even in death."I didn't understand.Everyone in the Moonlight Pack knew that Alpha Elbert was the greatest leader the pack had seen in centuries. He had surveyed the

When the crowd saw this, the cursing erupted from all sides.Delilah rushed forward and slapped me hard across the face."You little bitch! Owen treated you with nothing but kindness, and this is what you did when Moonlight Pack needed you most.""Were you planning to steal those mineral veins all along? Hoard the riches for yourself?"Owen's eyes were terrifyingly cold."That night you disappeared without a word. The next morning, I discovered the survey map was gone. But I thought it over again and again, and I couldn't bring myself to confront you.""I never imagined it really was you who stole the map."I let out a small, hollow laugh.
