[Caleb’s POV]

Caleb was in the pack's Council Hall, discussing border defenses with the elders.

A notification suddenly pinged in his mind-link.

It was a message from Elena.

What's she playing at now? he thought impatiently as he opened it.

But as the recording began to play, the color drained from his face.

Lydia's voice came through, crystal clear: "Since you were twelve, I've been putting wolfsbane in your food..."

"The silver powder in your uniform, the push off the cliff... It was all my work. My masterpiece."

"Watching you grow weaker day by day has brought me so much joy..."

The recording stopped abruptly.

The hall fell deathly silent.

The elders stared at each other, too stunned to speak.

Just then, a violent agony erupted in Caleb's chest.

It felt as if his heart had been smashed by a blunt object, a piece of his very soul brutally torn away.

"Argh!" he let out a pained roar, and a spray of blood erupted from his mouth.

In that instant, the mate bond shattered completely.
