Chapter 4

Author: Spirit Creek
After so many divorces and remarriages that we'd gone through, I finally stopped hating Hansel and started resenting Teresa instead.

If she'd only ever seen me as Hansel's replacement, why had she spoiled me so much? Why had she gone so far as to promise me forever at our wedding?

If she'd ever loved me, how could she keep hurting me with one divorce after another? And if she'd stopped loving me altogether, why did she keep coming back to marry me again?

I should've realized a long time ago that our marriage had never meant what I thought it did. Teresa had only married me to get back at Hansel.

I pushed those memories aside and interrupted Stephen's rambling before glancing down at my phone.

I was leaving tomorrow, and I felt genuinely happy.

In another 24 hours, even being Teresa's ex-husband would be a thing of the past. After that, we'd have nothing to do with each other.

To make sure she couldn't interfere with my plans, I decided to move out of my apartment early and spend my last night at a hotel.

What I hadn't expected was that Hansel would be the first to call me.

This time, he sounded downright hostile. "Andrew, I had no idea you could be so vicious when it comes to women."

I drew a sharp breath.

I'd spent years swallowing my pride and putting up with everything Teresa and Hansel had put me through, only to have him accuse me of being the cruel one.

"You knowingly went after a married woman, Hansel. If that's all you've got to say, do us both a favor and shut the hell up."

I saw no reason to be polite anymore. If he thought I was vicious, I might as well live up to his expectations.

"I don't know what you did, but I'll admit you've managed to get the upper hand this time," Hansel continued, ignoring my sarcasm. "Teresa married you nine times, and every single time, she only did it to make me jealous."

I lowered my head. Of course, I knew that.

"But so what? Whenever I come back, she divorces you without a second thought. I figured this time would be no different, but..."

Hansel fell silent for a moment before bringing up something I'd been deliberately trying not to think about.

"But this time, she keeps picking fights with me. It's ridiculous, really. She says I'm the one she loves most, but I know better. Somehow, you've managed to make her fall for you, even though you were only ever supposed to be my replacement."

I couldn't bring myself to believe him, although his words left me with mixed feelings.

Still, I couldn't resist taking a jab at him. "What, are you scared?"

Hansel suddenly burst into arrogant laughter.

"Scared? Andrew, I asked Teresa to marry me. Why don't you take a guess? Do you think she said yes?"

I sighed and hung up.

I'd always known just how much Hansel meant to Teresa.

Back when she'd rushed onto the track to help me after I sprained my ankle, I'd noticed a pendant around her neck engraved with Hansel's name.

When she'd tutored me, the textbook she'd brought had an elegant leather cover with the name "Hans" written on it.

And when she'd put that fraudulent company out of business for cheating me out of my wages, she'd used an investment fund called the Hanresa Corp.

Teresa had been such a huge part of my youth that nearly every memory I had revolved around her.

But Hansel was the man she'd never been able to forget.

That night, even though I knew Teresa wouldn't call, I kept staring at my phone. I sat on the hotel couch and watched it until morning.

Today was supposed to be the day we got married for the tenth time.

Instead, I was leaving.

At 7:00 am, I took a cab to the airport. Teresa hadn't sent me a single message, so I opened our chat and deleted her contact.

By 8:00 am, I'd cleared security. She still hadn't called, so I found her number and blocked it.

At 9:00 am, I boarded the plane and began deleting every photo and message on my phone that had anything to do with Teresa.

Just then, my phone rang.

It was Stephen.

I answered the call, but instead of hearing his voice, I heard Teresa's.

She sounded frantic and on the verge of tears.

"Honey, where are you?"

"She's in love with Hansel!"I looked at Teresa, who seemed desperate to convince me that Mikayla was a terrible person, and suddenly found the whole situation funny."Do you seriously think I'm still the same clueless guy I was when I fell for you? That I'd get involved with Mikayla without knowing anything about her?"Teresa opened her mouth to argue, but I raised a hand between us."I already know what you're going to say, so don't bother. Besides, what I do with my life is none of your business. I put up with nine divorces and remarriages because of you. Did you seriously think I'd keep doing that for the rest of my life?"I'm still young, Teresa, and I've already been married nine times. Can't I date someone new and have a little fun for a change?"Her expression shifted with every word I said. Then, she suddenly smiled."Mikayla, you heard him, didn't you? He's only dating you because he wants to have some fun. You hail from such a respectable family. Please, just leave h

"Mikayla really loves you."The video had been filmed discreetly from behind a decorative plant in a corner. The footage was too obstructed to make out anyone clearly, but I could hear Mikayla's voice."Hansel, are you seriously trying to drag me into your mess with Teresa the same way you did with Andrew? Is everybody else just a pawn in your relationship?"Stop coming after me. I've given you the same answer every year, and it's never going to change. I'm not interested in you. Besides, I'm getting married. My future husband is a wonderful man, so show some respect and leave us alone."I stood there in shock for a long time before finally replying to my friend."Thank you."That video had finally put my doubts about Mikayla to rest, but now that I was about to meet her grandmother, I found myself feeling nervous again. What kind of woman would Cassandra be?It was my first time visiting the Harris family, and I wanted to make a good impression. But when Mikayla drove us into

Mikayla told me she'd noticed me even before everyone started teasing us that night. In fact, she'd noticed me at several earlier gatherings, too. I'd always sat quietly off to the side without saying much, but whenever we played games, I was consistently one of the best players.I somehow managed to keep a low profile while still standing out from the crowd. She couldn't quite figure me out, and that had only made her more interested in me."You've got a mind of your own, Andrew. Even after spending all those years putting up with Teresa, you haven't lost what makes you who you are. How could I not fall for you?"From that day on, Mikayla and I started going out together regularly.Stephen accused me of forgetting all about my best life partner now that I'd found someone new.Of course, I had. What was so great about my ex-wife that I should still be thinking about her?"After dating Mikayla for more than a month, I could barely remember what Teresa looked like, much less care

"Now that you're here, take Andrew out and have some fun! He's been cooped up in the house so long he's practically forgotten what the outside world looks like!"Stephen had always loved going out, so he instantly agreed to Mom's request.Still, I hadn't expected him to settle in quite so quickly. He hadn't even been in Zeldon for three days before he knew the place better than I did, despite my having lived there for half a month.I had no idea where he'd met so many expats, but he kept dragging me to one social gathering after another. Before I'd even learned everyone's names, Stephen was already acting like he'd known them for years."Come on, guys! If you know any nice single women, introduce them to Andrew. He needs someone to help him get over his ex."Stephen enthusiastically introduced me to everyone, determined to find me a new girlfriend.Someone immediately took him up on the suggestion. "Then, Mikayla's your girl! You two can help each other get over your exes. Righ

Mom had always believed that life was too short to spend it chasing a love that might never last. Experiencing a passionate romance once was enough to make life worthwhile, and expecting to spend forever with the same person wasn't always realistic or necessary.Besides, Teresa had never wanted to spend the rest of her life with me in the first place.I hadn't understood what Mom meant back then. I'd always believed Teresa was different. She'd filled the void Dad had left in my life, giving me all the love and attention I'd lost.It was only later that I realized she'd showered me with affection because she wanted to turn me into another version of Hansel, one who would love her and do whatever she wanted.I'd been so caught up in loving Teresa and believing she loved me in return that I'd forgotten I was my own person. Now that I'd finally broken free of Teresa, I understood what Mom had been trying to tell me all those years. The thought made me smile."Mom, can I just be y

From somewhere in the background, I heard Stephen let out a weary sigh."Andrew! Just so we're clear, I didn't tell her to come looking for you! She showed up at my house and snatched my phone right out of my hand!"Then, he addressed Teresa, "Teresa, I'm only putting up with this because you used to be married to my best friend. If you don't get out of my house right now, I'm calling the cops!"Teresa ignored him and repeated her question. "Where are you?"I took a deep breath, trying to push aside all the resentment I'd carried for so many years. When I finally spoke, my voice was calmer than I'd ever imagined it could be."What is it? Did Hansel finally ask you to marry him? Are you crying because you're so happy?"Teresa's voice grew increasingly urgent, and I could hear the panic and confusion in her tearful response."No! I didn't agree to marry him! We agreed to get remarried today, didn't we?"Her tone turned cautious.I stood there, stunned. In all the years we'd bee
