Chapter 3

Author: Spirit Creek
"Whether there's anything going on between you two or not, I'm still your ex-husband," I retorted.

It didn't matter that we'd gotten married nine times, only to end up divorced again and again. The fact remained that I was her ex-husband.

Silence settled between us, and a strong gust of wind swept through the night, carrying my words away.

After a long moment, Teresa raised her head and tried to explain.

"I know I was wrong to divorce you, but I couldn't let people accuse Hansel of having an affair with a married woman."

I took a couple of steps back, growing increasingly irritated. I couldn't understand her reasoning, and frankly, I didn't want to.

She kept insisting there was nothing going on between them, yet she was so concerned about protecting Hansel's reputation that she'd divorced me to spare him the accusations.

What about me? Was I supposed to just accept being divorced nine times?

"I'm sure you've thought everything through, Ms. Sloan. I have nothing more to say."

I lowered my head and avoided her eyes.

Teresa opened her mouth, seemingly wanting to say something else, but her phone rang.

It was Hansel.

I glanced at his name on her screen and said, "You should go be with him. We can talk about us some other time."

Teresa looked at me for several seconds before finally walking away and answering the call.

I returned to my apartment and shut the door firmly behind me, as though I could lock everything that had just happened, along with everything that had happened before, firmly in the past.

…

Time passed quickly.

Once I'd finished handing over my responsibilities at work, my departure date drew closer and closer.

With no job to worry about and Teresa no longer in my life, I cut myself off from my social circle in Yelby and found that life was much more enjoyable.

Only Stephen, who now knew about my plans to move abroad, occasionally shared the latest gossip with me.

For instance, after our encounter at the mall, Teresa and Hansel had apparently gotten into a huge argument, prompting several of their mutual friends to try to patch things up between them.

On another occasion, Hansel had snapped at Teresa during a party, leaving her standing alone in a corner for a long time, seemingly lost in thought.

I listened to everything Stephen told me, feeling neither sadness nor satisfaction.

In the past, whenever I'd heard that Teresa and Hansel had fought, I'd immediately seized the opportunity to beg her to remarry me ahead of schedule.

But this time, I didn't even feel like entertaining her messages.

Even when Stephen casually mentioned that Teresa had been asking him how I was doing, I felt no urge to contact her.

What surprised me even more was that Teresa had actually started calling me herself.

I repeatedly declined her calls, to the point that even Stephen, who was having coffee with me at the time, thought I was being cruel.

"Is that how women work? The more you push them away, the more they want you?" Stephen joked.

I kicked him under the table.

Then, he couldn't help sighing again. "Still, Teresa used to treat you pretty well."

His words brought back memories of the past, and my thoughts drifted to the time when I'd first met her.

I was still in college back then. Teresa was only six years older than me and happened to be one of Mom's business partners.

When Mom went abroad, she'd asked her to look after me.

She was already a prominent businesswoman in Yelby, but she indulged me in just about everything, treating me like a younger brother.

When I sprained my ankle during a track meet, she'd rushed onto the track and helped me off in front of everyone.

When I failed an exam, she'd called me an idiot before picking up my textbooks and tutoring me herself.

And when a company cheated me out of 1,600 dollars in wages during an internship, she'd pulled every string she could to put the company out of business.

I couldn't say exactly when I'd fallen in love with the woman who treated me like her little brother.

All I knew was that I'd grown increasingly attached to her, and I never hesitated to show her just how much I needed her.

Teresa was so accustomed to spoiling me that she never noticed anything unusual until I finally confessed my feelings to her.

Her expression shifted before she let out a sigh.

"There's someone else I like."

That was the first time I learned about Hansel, a man who looked a little like me.

My confession had ended in complete rejection, but it was only the beginning of my nine years of heartbreak with Teresa.

During those years, Hansel returned from abroad. He and Teresa got together, fought, struggled to make their relationship work, and eventually broke up.

One night, while I was drinking with Teresa to make her feel better after the breakup, I foolishly confessed my feelings to her for the second time.

She responded with a kiss, and we slept together. I was her first, and before long, we were married.

But then, Hansel came to Yelby, and Teresa asked me for a divorce for the first time.

"She's in love with Hansel!"I looked at Teresa, who seemed desperate to convince me that Mikayla was a terrible person, and suddenly found the whole situation funny."Do you seriously think I'm still the same clueless guy I was when I fell for you? That I'd get involved with Mikayla without knowing anything about her?"Teresa opened her mouth to argue, but I raised a hand between us."I already know what you're going to say, so don't bother. Besides, what I do with my life is none of your business. I put up with nine divorces and remarriages because of you. Did you seriously think I'd keep doing that for the rest of my life?"I'm still young, Teresa, and I've already been married nine times. Can't I date someone new and have a little fun for a change?"Her expression shifted with every word I said. Then, she suddenly smiled."Mikayla, you heard him, didn't you? "Mikayla really loves you."The video had been filmed discreetly from behind a decorative plant in a corner. The footage was too obstructed to make out anyone clearly, but I could hear Mikayla's voice."Hansel, are you seriously trying to drag me into your mess with Teresa the same way you did with Andrew? Is everybody else just a pawn in your relationship?"Stop coming after me. I've given you the same answer every year, and it's never going to change. I'm not interested in you. Besides, I'm getting married. My future husband is a wonderful man, so show some respect and leave us alone."I stood there in shock for a long time before finally replying to my friend."Thank you."That video had finally put my doubts about Mikayla to rest, but now that I was about to meet her grandmother, I found myself feeling nervous again. What kind of woman would Cassandra be?It was my first time visiting the Harris family, and I wanted to make a good impression. But when Mikayla drove us into

Mikayla told me she'd noticed me even before everyone started teasing us that night. In fact, she'd noticed me at several earlier gatherings, too. I'd always sat quietly off to the side without saying much, but whenever we played games, I was consistently one of the best players.I somehow managed to keep a low profile while still standing out from the crowd. She couldn't quite figure me out, and that had only made her more interested in me."You've got a mind of your own, Andrew. Even after spending all those years putting up with Teresa, you haven't lost what makes you who you are. How could I not fall for you?"From that day on, Mikayla and I started going out together regularly.Stephen accused me of forgetting all about my best life partner now that I'd found someone new.Of course, I had. What was so great about my ex-wife that I should still be thinking about her?"After dating Mikayla for more than a month, I could barely remember what Teresa looked like, much less care

"Now that you're here, take Andrew out and have some fun! He's been cooped up in the house so long he's practically forgotten what the outside world looks like!"Stephen had always loved going out, so he instantly agreed to Mom's request.Still, I hadn't expected him to settle in quite so quickly. He hadn't even been in Zeldon for three days before he knew the place better than I did, despite my having lived there for half a month.I had no idea where he'd met so many expats, but he kept dragging me to one social gathering after another. Before I'd even learned everyone's names, Stephen was already acting like he'd known them for years."Come on, guys! If you know any nice single women, introduce them to Andrew. He needs someone to help him get over his ex."Stephen enthusiastically introduced me to everyone, determined to find me a new girlfriend.Someone immediately took him up on the suggestion. Mom had always believed that life was too short to spend it chasing a love that might never last. Experiencing a passionate romance once was enough to make life worthwhile, and expecting to spend forever with the same person wasn't always realistic or necessary.Besides, Teresa had never wanted to spend the rest of her life with me in the first place.I hadn't understood what Mom meant back then. I'd always believed Teresa was different. She'd filled the void Dad had left in my life, giving me all the love and attention I'd lost.It was only later that I realized she'd showered me with affection because she wanted to turn me into another version of Hansel, one who would love her and do whatever she wanted.I'd been so caught up in loving Teresa and believing she loved me in return that I'd forgotten I was my own person. Now that I'd finally broken free of Teresa, I understood what Mom had been trying to tell me all those years. The thought made me smile."Mom, can I just be y

From somewhere in the background, I heard Stephen let out a weary sigh."Andrew! Just so we're clear, I didn't tell her to come looking for you! She showed up at my house and snatched my phone right out of my hand!"Then, he addressed Teresa, "Teresa, I'm only putting up with this because you used to be married to my best friend. If you don't get out of my house right now, I'm calling the cops!"Teresa ignored him and repeated her question. "Where are you?"I took a deep breath, trying to push aside all the resentment I'd carried for so many years. When I finally spoke, my voice was calmer than I'd ever imagined it could be."What is it? Did Hansel finally ask you to marry him? Are you crying because you're so happy?"Teresa's voice grew increasingly urgent, and I could hear the panic and confusion in her tearful response."No! I didn't agree to marry him! We agreed to get remarried today, didn't we?"Her tone turned cautious.I stood there, stunned. In all the years we'd bee
