Chapter 2

Author: Sunny P.
When the old Alpha heard Lina's voice, his face flushed an ugly mottled red, and he didn't dare bring up the mating again.

"Elena... you're certain about choosing Cass? You've truly thought this through?"

My gaze traveled across the crowd to Cass, who had just returned from his trial in the Black Forest. Everyone knew the Alpha's eldest son had a reputation for brutality. Not long ago, he'd flayed a wolf from the Gray Pack who'd dared provoke him—even now, the scent of blood seemed to cling to him.

"I choose him," I said.

My mother had once told me that Cass's power surpassed even Cain's. If I couldn't have love, then I would seize absolute advantage and strength.

The old Alpha leaned on his wolf-fang staff and let out a long sigh. "The day you complete the mate-bonding, I'll publicly name the new Alpha heir."

My ceremony with Cass was set for a week away. With a new mate chosen, everything tied to the old one would naturally be discarded.

When I went to the pack's jewelry shop to pick out new rings, I unexpectedly ran into Cain and Lina, freshly returned.

Lina's lips still carried traces of honey, not quite wiped clean, and Cain's collarbone bore fresh red marks.

Their eyes met mine, and Cain instinctively shifted to shield Lina behind him.

When I didn't react, he grew uneasy and forced a mocking smirk.

"Elena... you're clever, tracking me down here. Afraid I won't go through with the mating?"

His voice dropped deliberately, thick with condescending arrogance. "Since you love me that much, I'll give you the respect you deserve after the ceremony. But don't even think about coming between Lina and me."

Lina tugged at Cain's sleeve but shot me a teasing glance. "Cain, Elena loves you so much... how can you talk to her like that?

"Don't worry, Elena. Once I've trained Cain up properly, I'll return him to you."

Cain let her cling to him, his expression indulgent, full of fondness. I suddenly remembered how, in the past, when I'd simply wanted to hold his hand, he'd quietly pull away.

"You're the future Luna. What kind of example is that, pawing at each other in front of everyone?"

So it wasn't that he didn't understand intimacy—he just didn't want it with me.

I drew a deep breath, tamped down the storm in my chest, and met his gaze coldly.

"Who said I'm mating you?"

Cain froze. As his brow furrowed, a shop assistant appeared from behind the counter, holding a velvet tray.

"Miss Elena, your chosen wedding rings are ready."

Cain snorted. "You've already picked out rings... and you say you're not mating me?"

He stepped forward and grabbed my wrist. "Put it on. Let's see if your taste has improved."

But his words died in his throat. His gaze dropped to the faint indent at the base of my ring finger—the mark left by a ring he'd given me long ago. His voice faltered.

"The ring I gave you...?"

"Thrown away," I said flatly.

The day I decided to change mates, I'd thrown it out. It had been Cain's first gift to me—a hand-polished wolf-fang ring, our initials carved inside.

The arrogant Cain had gone red-faced when he shoved it into my palm.

"This fang came from a wolf king I killed myself. Lose it, and I'll never forgive you."

But in the end, the first to break a promise was him.

When I later fished another shattered ring from the trash, Cain had only scratched his nose awkwardly.

"Lina drank too much at the gathering that night... insisted on taking it off to look at it... somehow it ended up broken."

"Throw it out. I'll make you a new one."

But I waited a long time. I waited until the mark on my finger faded, and I never received another ring.

I turned to see Cain approaching with Lina in tow. Both wore ill-fitting backup ceremonial outfits—wrinkled and sloppy. Lina's expression was difficult to read, a strange mix of pride and resentment. Marrying Cain had always been her greatest desire, yet the extravagant wedding she'd dreamed of was nothing like this makeshift ceremony trailing behind mine.As they passed, she pressed herself against Cain, deliberately revealing the fresh kiss marks on his neck—a smug claim of ownership. "From now on, we're one family."I arched a brow and, playing along, replied with mock solemnity, "Little brother, sister-in-law... may you always be together. Locked tight."Lina preened in satisfaction, but Cain's fists clenched at my words. I ignored him, took Cass's hand, and under the priest's blessing, we exchanged our tokens. With the heat of onlookers' gazes on my back, Cass lowered his head and pressed a gentle kiss to my neck, sealing the mark. I felt the bond settle deep in my soul and w

The old Alpha's face darkened. He signaled for the ceremony to pause and led me to the VIP lounge at the back."Elena... I know this isn't what we agreed upon," he said, his voice heavy with regret. "But Cain is still the legitimate heir. If I hand the Alpha position to a bastard, the council elders will never accept it."Besides... Cass has already been given half the mines and hunting grounds. That's an extraordinary concession—it's not as if we're shortchanging you."Half the resources, or absolute authority as Alpha—any wolf with sense knew which held true power. Without the title, Cass would never have real legitimacy."Are you breaking the agreement?" I asked flatly. The old Alpha's gaze shifted uneasily. "Half the resources is more than generous. Elena... one must learn to be content."I watched his eyes dart away, and I understood. Age softens the heart, especially when bloodlines are involved. No matter what, his loyalty still bent toward the unworthy legitimate heir.T

Cain froze, caught completely off guard.Lina's eyes darted, as if she'd just noticed something. Pointing at Cass's attire, she said, "Brother Cain... isn't that the ceremonial suit only the groom wears?"Cain's gaze slowly traveled to the black-and-gold robes embroidered with the Alpha King's totem. His face contorted with fury. "Elena... you actually dare to make him your mate?"He lost control, words spilling out in a frenzy. "He's a bastard! A mongrel whelped by some stray she-wolf! Have you lost your mind, mating with him?"His glare seemed to bore holes straight through Cass. "Elena, when did you start... creeping around with him? Was it when I was inspecting the Northern territories, or while you were hiding out at the Alpha estate nursing your wounds?"Cain acted like a wronged mate, desperate for proof of my betrayal. But he forgot—his Northern inspection was a public duty, and he'd taken Lina to see the auroras. When I was injured at the estate, he'd been busy squiring L

After I spoke, Cass stepped forward, clad in a black ceremonial suit threaded with gold—an exact match to mine. He extended his hand, palm up."Let's go to the altar. The elders are waiting."I placed my hand in his naturally, our fingers lacing together.A flash of fire ignited in Cain's eyes. "Elena... you shameless bitch! How dare you cozy up to another man right in front of me!"He lunged to pull me away, but two Gamma wolves behind Cass locked him in place.Cain was still roaring when Lina suddenly appeared, her face dramatically swathed in bandages, wailing, "Cain! They said Elena ordered them to punish me! I barely escaped!"I watched her performance with cold detachment. Those wolves were all Cass's trusted enforcers. There was no way they'd take orders from me. This was just another of Lina's fabrications. But Cain always fell for it. His pupils dilated to a dangerous amber. "Elena! You've got some nerve, bullying Lina right under my nose! Do you really want to start a

I smirked and said flatly, "Fine."In front of the entire pack, I stepped forward and looped my arms around Cass's neck, leaning close to murmur in his ear. "Let's go."Cain's enraged roar tore through the air behind us, but I no longer cared what he was shouting. In the nearby lounge, the healer was already waiting.Cass was tense at first, only relaxing when the healer confirmed I was all right. But when his gaze dropped to the cut along my jaw, a flicker of cold violence passed through his eyes."Sorry... I was too late."He reached out as if to touch the wound, but his fingers trembled. He clenched his fist and pulled back.I held the steaming cup of herbal tea, my mind still fixed on Cain's claws driving toward me—for Lina. Even knowing how biased he was, even knowing that orphan girl would always come first, I never imagined he would actually try to hurt me. Try to kill me.I remembered when we were pups, sneaking into the forbidden forest and getting cornered by a pack o

The box held a moonstone—a relic my mother left me before she passed. On her deathbed, she told me the stone would watch over me and guide me to my true fated mate.Cain knew better than anyone what that stone meant to me.He hesitated for half a breath, then jerked his chin toward the far end of the hall. "Put that outside for now."Lina's eyes glittered. She darted forward and snatched the box from the Gamma's hands. "Cain's right. Something this precious needs to be handled with care."She spoke of care, but her hand deliberately slipped. The moonstone crashed onto the cold marble floor and shattered into pieces. The blue glow bled out through the cracks, its soft light snuffed out forever.I lunged forward, dropping to my knees. "Oh! The box was so slippery! I couldn't hold it!" Lina's voice rang out above me.I stood and slapped her across the face. She screamed, spinning halfway from the force.Teeth gritted, I struck her again. "I slipped too, you worthless—"Suddenl
