“I’ve always had my eyes on one person,” Kain said sharply. “Scarlett is the woman I love. My fiancée. The rest is fiction.”

The journalist turned to Scarlett. “Your response?”

Scarlett didn’t hesitate.

“I am not my sister,” she said calmly, each word precise. “We are not close. I don’t know her.” She lifted her chin. “And I won’t be compared to her.”

Kain’s hand brushed hers—brief, almost accidental.

“Scarlett is my bride,” he added. “I am a man of my word.”

Cameras clicked faster.

Her dyed auburn hair slicked into a tight low bun. Gray jeans hugging every line of her leg, ripped at the knee. Black top, fitted and sharp. LV handbag resting against her arm—untouchable. Untamed. Untamedly hers. His heart thumped. Wrong. Uneven. Loud. Had she seen him like that? On his knees. Breaking. Confessing what no one was supposed to hear? Space between them pulsed. She lifted the sunglasses. Eyes—sharp, cold, glittering, unreadable—cut straight through him. . . “I’ve been looking for you all this while,” Scarlett said, voice smooth, edged with sarcasm. Dangerous. “…And yet—here you are, talking to a…” Her lips curved slowly, deliberately. “…little boy.” She let the words hang. Then, almost lightly, “Sorry I had to strong-arm Mario into telling me where you were. If he gets punished… that’s on me. Don’t fire him on my behalf.” Kain stood slowly. His jaw tightened. His hands curled at his sides. “What do you want, Scarlett?” His voice was low, sharp, cold—li

Her face pressed into his chest, tears soaking through his shirt, hot and unstoppable. “I’m here,” he said quietly, steady even as something burned in his chest. “I’ve got you. You’re not alone.” She clung to him like he was the only solid thing left. And for once, he didn’t push her away. ~LATER Kain walked the lawyer into the corridor. Hospital lights buzzed overhead. The air smelled like disinfectant and waiting. “Thank you,” Kain said. “For everything.” “There’s one thing left,” the lawyer replied. “Her clearance forms.” “I’ll have them signed.” The lawyer shook his head. “That won’t be possible, Mr. Wolf. Only a family member can.” Kain’s jaw tightened. “They’ve already been sent,” the lawyer continued. “To her sister. And her aunt.” . . “No response,” the lawyer said, his voice flat. “She has no one else,” Kain replied, low and steady. “Her sister won’t sign. There’s… tension.” “There’s no other option,” the lawyer said softly, then hesitated. “Unless… you’re fa

“Good morning, Jade.” His mouth brushed her knuckles, a claim disguised as manners. Air rushed into his lungs like he’d been drowning. He straightened instantly, energy flooding his limbs. “You’re awake.” He realized he was holding her hand only when his thumb pressed into her knuckles. He didn’t let go. “How do you feel?” Her lashes lifted slowly. A faint curve touched her mouth—tired, private. “Like I ran out of strength before I ran out of trouble.” The breath he’d been holding finally slipped free. “I brought you food,” he said, too quickly, eyes skimming the room like it mattered. “It’s gone now. Someone cleared it.” Her fingers shifted against his, light but deliberate. “…Don’t worry. I wasn’t hungry .” “You say that when you are.” She huffed softly. “How do you know that.” “I know everything,” he said, then quieter, “that concerns you.” Her gaze flicked to his face. Stayed there a second too long. “…I’m okay,” she said again, like she needed him to believe it. “No

Her thoughts scrambled, desperate and panicked. How did it get there? Who touched my things? She felt eyes on her—burning, heavy. Kain. She didn’t look at him, but she felt him anyway. Like gravity. Like home she wasn’t allowed to reach. “Objection!” her lawyer snapped. “This is circumstantial. There is no proof my client placed that weapon there.” The gavel struck, but the murmurs didn’t stop. Jade forced herself to lift her head and meet the jury’s eyes. I didn’t do this. Someone is destroying me. Her hands shook, but she didn’t cry. Not here. Not like this. Then— A chair scraped. Kain stood. The sound of it echoed louder than the gavel. Jade’s heart slammed into her ribs. “Your Honor,” he said, voice low and unyielding, “I can provide an alibi for Miss Jade Miller.” The room exploded in gasps. Scarlett turned sharply, disbelief flashing across her face. “I was with her that night,” Kain continued. “She couldn’t have been involved.” Jade’s breath left her in a bro

Not yet. **** Out of camera range, Kain’s hands pressed lightly against her arm, guiding her away. His voice dropped, low and tight. “You know Jade is in prison. You should drop the charges.” Scarlett’s eyes snapped to his. “She murdered our parents,” she said coolly. “Why would I ever do that?” “You know she didn’t,” Kain replied, unwavering. “Jade can’t kill anyone.
