LOGINAlexa never expected her loyalty to be repaid with betrayal. On the day she discovered her fiancé cheating with her stepsister, Alexa made a vow—to make them both pay dearly for what they had done. When she met Devan—the uncle of her former fiancé—Alexa was instead offered a marriage proposal. And who would have thought that both of them had their own motives in this relationship? Were they merely using each other, or did they truly need one another?
View MoreThe sound of Alexa Ivander’s footsteps—a twenty-seven-year-old woman—rang sharply as her heels struck the marble floor of the Alistair family company lobby.
For the past three years, this company had been her workplace, after she was rejected from entering her father’s company and belittled by her own father.
Alexa clenched her fists tightly at her sides, her face hardening as her jaw tensed while she recalled the words she had overheard some time ago.
The voices were sharp and piercing, making it difficult for Alexa to drive them away. They continued to echo, stabbing at her ears.
‘Why do you even have to think about Alexa? Don’t you know I’m only using her?’
‘She’s good at dealing with clients. I’ve gained so many benefits from her hard work. And she owns shares in your family’s company—I can take them over after we get married. Once I get all the benefits I want, I’ll leave her and marry you.’
Bastard!
Alexa clenched her fists even tighter, her teeth grinding together. Her chest throbbed painfully as the sounds of the two shameless people burned into her ears.
Her eyes had been stained by the indecent scene between her fiancé-to-be—Ronan—and Felicya—Alexa’s stepsister—in the apartment that should have been the most comfortable place for Alexa to return to someday, once she married Ronan.
However, all those dreams vanished when Alexa came to the apartment to share the good news about her success in securing a major client who agreed to cooperate because of Alexa’s competence and warm demeanor.
Should Alexa consider this a disaster or a stroke of luck—for discovering the affair between her fiancé and her stepsister before her relationship with Ronan went any further?
She wanted nothing more than to punch Ronan in the face and yank Felicya’s long hair to punish them both. But Alexa realized that acting on impulse was not the right move at this moment.
She had to remain calm, because she knew that if she attacked them, she would still be the one blamed.
A bitter smile appeared on Alexa’s face. She was a biological child treated like a stepchild. Her father now loved and protected Felicya more than her, simply because of Felicya’s sweet tongue.
Damn it. Why did Alexa have to be in this position?
She took a deep breath and slowly exhaled as her hand gently pushed open the door to the HR department, startling the staff inside with her sudden presence.
“Ms. Alexa, what brings you here?”
Everyone knew who Alexa was—the assistant to Ronan who had significantly elevated the Alistair company’s reputation over the past two years.
Forcing a smile to suppress the emotions threatening to explode in her head, Alexa said, “I want to resign.”
Seeing the shocked look on the HR manager’s face, Alexa continued, “Ronan already knows, and he agrees. I just need the termination letter from you.”
“B-but why? Is there a reason?”
Hearing the question, Alexa’s smile thinned. “There’s no particular reason. I want to return to my father’s company.”
Her smile was filled with hatred and resentment. She struggled to remain calm amid the turmoil raging in her mind.
After obtaining the termination letter, Alexa walked out of the Alistair building. She got into the car parked in front but did not leave immediately. Instead, she dialed a number from the business card clenched between her fingers.
“Hello, Mr. Devan. This is Alexa Ivander. Do you have any free time today? I would like to meet you.”
“Alexa Ivander, what makes you think you want—and can—meet me?”
Alexa gripped the business card tightly. Her chest felt unbearably heavy, her breath hitching as she remembered the reason she had to meet Devan Alistair—Ronan’s uncle, who had only returned from abroad a few months ago and owned a company just like the Alistair family’s.
Trying to stay composed and push away all the pain she felt, Alexa said, “I have something that would be very beneficial to you. Would you be interested in hearing it?”
Devan, Alexa, and Mike went to Mr. John’s house. As soon as they arrived, they were welcomed by a servant standing at the front of the house. The servant bowed. “Good afternoon, Sir, Ma’am. Mr. John is waiting inside. Please, allow me to escort you.”Alexa nodded. “Thank you.”She smiled as the servant invited them in. Before stepping inside, Alexa turned to Devan first.Only then did she realize that Devan was looking at her strangely again, just like before.“Let’s go in. We shouldn’t keep Mr. John waiting too long.” Alexa said, letting Devan enter first.Alexa walked beside Devan. As soon as they reached the living room, Alexa looked at Mr. John, who had already smiled at her.The fifty-five-year-old man immediately stood up from his seat.“You finally came again, Alexa.”Alexa returned his smile and extended her hand. “I’m sorry for making you wait, Sir.”After shaking Alexa’s hand, Mr. John turned to the man standing beside her.Clearly, Mr. John knew that the man accompanying Al
Alexa stared at her phone screen. She only looked at the message from Ronan, with no intention of opening it.‘Do you think you can still use me and believe I’m just a foolish woman?’ Alexa thought as she clenched her phone tightly in her hand.Alexa let out a rough breath. When she turned to Devan, she met the man’s cold gaze.“Your nephew suddenly wants to invite me to meet someone,” Alexa said while turning her phone screen down onto her bag. “I don’t care who this important person he’s talking about is.”Devan’s silence, accompanied by his cold stare, made Alexa fall silent again. They were both quiet when Devan’s phone suddenly rang.He opened the message he had received. Ronan was inviting Devan to lunch.Devan glanced briefly at Alexa, who remained silent, before replying to his nephew’s message.[I can’t.]Short and to the point. A firm rejection from Devan.Devan slipped his phone back into the inner pocket of his suit. Without looking at Alexa, he said, “There’s no need to r
Seeing the faint smirk on Devan’s face, Alexa stared at him in shock, her expression filled with annoyance and disbelief.“What do you think I gave him? Don’t think I’m that kind of woman—” Alexa couldn’t finish her sentence. Her face flushed red as she held back her anger. “Just wait and see tomorrow. I’m not the kind of woman you think I am.”After speaking, Alexa turned her body away from Devan. But then she turned back and spoke again, “I did come to you for my own purpose, but that doesn’t mean I’m a cheap woman. And you’re the one who wanted to marry me—remember that.”Devan stared at Alexa as she vented her anger. His eyes remained fixed on her back as she turned away again. His gaze was unreadable every time he looked at the woman who was now his wife.**The next morning.Alexa still wore an annoyed expression because of Devan’s suspicion. Even during breakfast, she refused to look at him.The dining room felt painfully silent, filled only with the sound of cutlery clinking a
One corner of Devan’s eyebrow lifted when he heard what Alexa said. A faint smile—almost invisible—rested on his lips as he noticed the fear on her face.“What are you thinking?” After speaking, Devan moved the raised hand to his tie, loosening it slightly.Alexa flinched. Her eyes widened when she saw what Devan was doing. So that was why she had misunderstood—thinking he was about to do something to her.Swallowing hard, Alexa stepped back to create some distance between herself and Devan before speaking, “I just wanted to ask … do we have to share a room?”Devan frowned deeply upon hearing her question, his expression turning even colder. “I don’t need to answer your question.”The man in front of her was truly difficult to talk to. Alexa had to be more careful. “Alright. I was just asking.”“You should already know the duties of a wife.”Devan’s words made Alexa’s eyes widen.“A-a wife’s duties? What do you mean?” Alexa stammered in panic.Still wearing a cold expression, Devan sa
