Chapter 3

Author: Vincent Gale
Even though I'd been a stay-at-home husband for years, I could still crush it at work.

I established a new company, moved into a new environment, and started a new chapter. Everything was heading in a better direction.

While I was consulting with my lawyer and preparing to file for divorce, Quinn called me, as if she hadn't done anything wrong. "When are you coming home? I can't sleep without you."

"Pop a sleeping pill then. If that doesn't work, go to a hotel with Oliver."

"Are you still holding that against me? I already told you that Oliver's just a friend. Besides, I've already swallowed my pride and asked you to come home. What more do you want?"

Her words grated on my ears.

This was who she had become. At some point, she had started believing that speaking to me in a commanding tone was what it meant to swallow her pride.

Quinn actually thought she could wipe the slate clean with just a couple of sentences. What a pipe dream.

I sneered. "Use your brain for once, Quinn. You're my wife, yet you snuck off to a hotel to play poker with your ex. Did you honestly think I wouldn't divorce you and just carry on as usual?"

"I already told you he's my ex-boyfriend. I only see him as a friend. I'm willing to forgive you for walking out on me, so stop making a fuss, okay?" she continued as self-righteously as ever.

At this point, calling her brainless felt like a compliment. "Shut up! Regardless, we're getting a divorce."

As soon as my words fell, Quinn's derisive chuckle echoed through the receiver. "Divorce? Do you really think you can stand on your own two feet now, Julian? If it weren't for my connections, do you think any of your company's suppliers and business partners would even know who you are?

"Think long and hard about this. If we really get divorced, I guarantee you'll never be able to hold your head up again; you'll end up so broke that you won't even be able to put food on your table!"

My heart turns to ice, and I hang up the phone.

After settling into my new job and arranging everything at the company, I instructed my lawyer to serve the divorce agreement. Then, I began rebuilding my own network.

Quinn's company had grown to where it was entirely because I had sacrificed my own connections to help her. Now, it was time to rekindle those relationships.

I drove home after a long, exhausting day, only to find Quinn at my doorstep. She appeared frail and pitiful, though her face seemed even more haggard than before.

"Are you sabotaging us, Julian? Why did all of Oliver's deals fall through today?" Her gaze was filled with rage, suspicion, and disappointment. "Do you have any idea how important his projects are to the company? If he can't deliver the goods on time, he'll have to pay a huge penalty! Hurry up and help him sort this out, or he'll really go bankrupt."

I was unfazed. I kept a straight face as I responded apathetically, "Get a grip, Ms. White. We're getting a divorce soon, so I have no obligation to help you. I thought you said I couldn't hold a candle to Oliver. In that case, he should handle this on his own."

Quinn froze for a moment. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to be this cold and aloof. "You're so childish! Can't you drop this? I've had enough!

"Do you think I'll regret it just because you're targeting Oliver? Let me make myself clear—don't even think about getting a divorce. I won't agree to it!"

My words had clearly infuriated Quinn. Her haggard face flushed crimson and paled.

Right then, her phone rang. "I've looked into your husband's recent hospital visit, Ms. White."

Quinn glanced at me, her expression peculiar. "I'm listening."

"Your husband suffered an acute asthma attack caused by a long-term allergic reaction to traditional medicinal herbs... He went under for three minutes and nearly died on the table!"

To my surprise, when I returned home, Quinn was still there. I couldn't believe she had actually waited outside my door the entire night.I almost stepped on her because she was just lying there on the floor. That was when I realized her face was as pale as a sheet of paper. Her breathing was faint, and her body was cold. If I hadn't felt her pulse, I'd have sworn that she was dead. I immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. Even though we were divorced, I would've done the same thing for a sick stray cat or dog on the street. "Have you lost your marbles, or do you just have a death wish?" Quinn, who had just come to, ripped off her oxygen mask and staggered out of the hospital to see me. Noticing how furious I was, she was clearly at a loss. I could see the needle mark on her arm, still oozing blood. "I just wanted to see you..." Quinn used to be like this, too. Back in the day, when she was working odd jobs to make money, she would message me whene

I slammed the door shut, but knowing Quinn's stubborn streak, she wasn't about to give up that easily. As expected, in the days that followed, every time I stepped outside, I would see her waiting downstairs for me. Even when I treated her like she wasn't there and refused to say a single word to her, she still wouldn't leave. As far as I was concerned, from the moment she had played poker with Oliver at that hotel, she had already become a stranger to me. Ironically, when I wanted to see her in the past, she would brush me off, claiming that she was too busy with work. Now that I didn't want to see her, she wanted to be attached to my hip. …I heard from some friends in the industry that Quinn's company had descended into chaos, mainly because Quinn, the CEO, had stopped giving a damn about business and was spending her days stalking me. Oliver was absolutely furious. The prize he thought he had in the bag had slipped right through his fingers. Every single day, he'd beg her

Unfortunately, I wasn't ready to accept Korra's feelings. Perhaps because of what happened with Quinn, I found myself being especially cautious about getting into a new relationship. Once we were in the car, I took the herbal medicine from Korra and joked, "You know, drinking too much traditional medicine can actually do more harm than good." Korra pressed her lips together. She was a bright young lady. It didn't take long for her to realize that I'd turned her down.Instead of responding, she simply briefed me on a few work-related matters. Then, she casually mentioned that we had a contract to negotiate with the film studio, scheduled for the evening after tomorrow.I looked at Korra, my smile faint. I wasn't sure if this was really about business, but I was certain she wanted to ask me out to a movie. Unfortunately, I had no interest in romance at the moment. After all, I had just managed to break free from the shackles of marriage. I figured that I might as well enjoy this

Oliver used to bend over backward for Quinn, showering her with sweet nothings and treating her with nothing but tenderness and consideration. Now that he was in trouble, not only did she refuse to help him, but she even snapped at him.He said, "Ms. White… I only did this for you and your company. He has no idea how much these contracts actually mean for the business!" "That's a matter between us. You're an outsider, so you should butt out!" That word "outsider" struck a nerve. Oliver flew into a rage. "I see how it is. I'm an outsider now, is that it? If I'm going down, I'll take you down with me!" The two of them got into a heated argument. I had time to kill, so I sat back and enjoyed the show.Just then, I received a text message from my newly hired assistant, Korra Smith. "I found a special remedy for asthma, Mr. Heathcliff. People claim that it works wonders. I left it on your desk. Be sure to drink it!"A warm feeling filled my heart. As it turned out, there really was

My sudden assertiveness caught Quinn completely off guard. As she massaged her temples, memories came flooding back to her. She suddenly remembered something, and the color drained from her face. "Did you really go into shock a few days ago?" I couldn't even be bothered to answer her. I had already told her everything that needed to be said. Whether she believed me or not, I didn't want to waste another second on Quinn. "Get out of my way," I spat out before walking right past her without an ounce of warmth in my gaze. Quinn finally panicked. She positioned herself in front of me, grasped my arm, and pleaded, "It isn't what it looks like, Julian. I seriously had no idea. I've just been so busy lately…"Please don't be mad at me. Come home with me. Let's sit down, talk this through, and clear up the misunderstanding. Can't we just go back to how things were?"Quinn probably realized that she was in the wrong this time. For once, she actually tried to placate me. Had this bee

"You must be joking, right?" Quinn's voice was filled with disbelief. It felt like years had passed since the last time I went into shock. Quinn hung up on the doctor and eyed me skeptically. "You really are something, Julian; you even managed to get the doctors at the hospital to collude with you. Is this your latest stunt to get my attention?"Her reaction was so absurd that it was almost comical. When she learned that I had gone into shock, her immediate reaction was to think that it was a joke. She even thought it was all made up, going so far as to claim that I'd colluded with the doctor. I honestly wondered if she was even using her brain. "Regardless of whether you're ill or not, I want you to step up and take care of Oliver's situation. I'll forgive all your mistakes." I took a deep breath, shook my head, and refused. "I'm afraid I can't do that. As you know, all I've done in the last few years is cook and brew traditional medicine."Quinn's eyes flickered when she he
