Chapter 2

Author: Vincent Gale
Quinn scoffed when she heard the hard edge in my voice. After all, she had always believed that as long as I was living off her dime, there was no way I would ever actually divorce her. "You ought to think this through. Once you leave me, you won't even be able to feed yourself!"

I smiled and shook my head. She clearly didn't want me to leave, yet she still acted as though she were above me. "Don't waste your time worrying about me. Go enjoy your perfect life with Oliver."

Quinn and I were high school classmates. We didn't have some grand or cinematic love story.

She told me that she felt an instant connection the moment she first laid eyes on me. I, on the other hand, found her cute.

After graduating, I gave up the opportunity to further my studies at Cedarbourne and enrolled in an ordinary university with her. I had a huge fight with my family over it and eventually cut ties with them.

Back then, she was thoughtful and understanding; she worked herself to the bone to earn money to support me through graduate school. Perhaps it was all those late nights that eventually left her with chronic insomnia.

I'd searched high and low for a way to treat her insomnia, racking my brain until I finally came up with a special treatment. I prepared medicinal baths for her to soak in and help her sleep.

Quinn had smiled, wrapped her arms around me, and kissed me passionately. At the time, she was touched, yet her heart also went out to me.

Once she entered the workforce, I did everything I could to support her career. Aside from pulling strings and calling in favors to help her build connections, I spent the rest of my time holed up in herbal medicine shops, refining and improving the formula for her treatment.

Once, I suffered such a severe asthma attack that I went into hypoxic shock. I only survived after spending three days in the hospital on oxygen.

Quinn had bawled her eyes out beside my bed, swearing that from then on, she would always stay by my side and never let me put myself in danger again. She had told me that my health was what mattered most.

Following that incident, we walked down the aisle and got married. Now, she had probably even forgotten that I had asthma and allergies.

After leaving Quinn's villa, I headed straight to the hospital for a checkup. Even though asthma was difficult to treat, I could still live a healthy life as long as I stayed away from medicinal herbs.

The doctor prescribed me some medication to prevent further allergic reactions and expressed his gratitude. "You are far too generous, Mr. Heathcliff. The treatment formula you provided for neurogenic insomnia has been remarkably effective!"

I smiled. That was only to be expected. I'd personally tested the treatment on myself for seven years to help Quinn. How could it possibly have been ineffective?

After picking up my medication, I was about to leave when I ran into Oliver in the lobby. He looked at me with an eerie, contemptuous smile, sneering that I had fallen so far that I looked like a beggar, yet I still wasn't satisfied with a wife as wonderful as Quinn.

I couldn't even be bothered to waste my breath on him. Deep down, I thought that if someone like him had lived in ancient times, the whole village would've tied him up and thrown him into the river. The modern justice system was the only reason he was still breathing.

"What are you doing here, Julian?"

Unsurprisingly, where Oliver goes, Quinn follows. She looked haggard, yet she forced herself to put on a stern expression as she questioned me. I wondered when I'd get to see that exaggerated expression of hers with Oliver around.

"How much longer are you planning to keep this up before you move back home?"

In Quinn's mind, I was an errant child, and her word was law. I hid my medication and test reports behind my back. I was in no mood to entertain her.

Her face was flushed with anger, her brows knit together. For a fleeting second, I thought I caught a hint of concern in her eyes.

"What are you doing at the hospital? Have you fallen ill? Why didn't you tell me? Are you giving me the cold shoulder? What on earth is going through your head, Julian?"

At this point, she still didn't understand; she assumed I'd left her simply to force her to give in. She assumed I'd come to the hospital because I'd followed her there, unable to bear the thought of letting her go, and had deliberately made sure she saw me.

I was exasperated at how self-centered she was. I shook my head and turned to leave. "I wish you two a happy life together and hope you grow old together!"

Quinn, however, acted as if I'd betrayed her. She chased after me and bellowed, "You're so petty, Julian. You'll never measure up to Oliver in that regard!"

My gaze was ice-cold. I had zero desire to waste another breath on this brainless woman. Clutching my bag of medication, I stormed off.

Just then, Oliver pointed to the sign above the pharmacy counter, motioning for Quinn to drop the argument. "Q—Ms. White, look. The hospital has just come up with a new treatment for neurogenic insomnia."

He was well-mannered, and his tone was gentle. "Look, you haven't been sleeping well lately, right? The hospital claims this treatment has been very effective. You should give it a shot."

When I hailed a cab outside the hospital, I happened to catch sight of Oliver and Quinn. He was pointing at something and chattering away, while she stood rooted to the spot, staring blankly at the sign.

To my surprise, when I returned home, Quinn was still there. I couldn't believe she had actually waited outside my door the entire night.I almost stepped on her because she was just lying there on the floor. That was when I realized her face was as pale as a sheet of paper. Her breathing was faint, and her body was cold. If I hadn't felt her pulse, I'd have sworn that she was dead. I immediately called an ambulance and rushed her to the hospital. Even though we were divorced, I would've done the same thing for a sick stray cat or dog on the street. "Have you lost your marbles, or do you just have a death wish?" Quinn, who had just come to, ripped off her oxygen mask and staggered out of the hospital to see me. Noticing how furious I was, she was clearly at a loss. I could see the needle mark on her arm, still oozing blood. "I just wanted to see you..." Quinn used to be like this, too. Back in the day, when she was working odd jobs to make money, she would message me whene

I slammed the door shut, but knowing Quinn's stubborn streak, she wasn't about to give up that easily. As expected, in the days that followed, every time I stepped outside, I would see her waiting downstairs for me. Even when I treated her like she wasn't there and refused to say a single word to her, she still wouldn't leave. As far as I was concerned, from the moment she had played poker with Oliver at that hotel, she had already become a stranger to me. Ironically, when I wanted to see her in the past, she would brush me off, claiming that she was too busy with work. Now that I didn't want to see her, she wanted to be attached to my hip. …I heard from some friends in the industry that Quinn's company had descended into chaos, mainly because Quinn, the CEO, had stopped giving a damn about business and was spending her days stalking me. Oliver was absolutely furious. The prize he thought he had in the bag had slipped right through his fingers. Every single day, he'd beg her

Unfortunately, I wasn't ready to accept Korra's feelings. Perhaps because of what happened with Quinn, I found myself being especially cautious about getting into a new relationship. Once we were in the car, I took the herbal medicine from Korra and joked, "You know, drinking too much traditional medicine can actually do more harm than good." Korra pressed her lips together. She was a bright young lady. It didn't take long for her to realize that I'd turned her down.Instead of responding, she simply briefed me on a few work-related matters. Then, she casually mentioned that we had a contract to negotiate with the film studio, scheduled for the evening after tomorrow.I looked at Korra, my smile faint. I wasn't sure if this was really about business, but I was certain she wanted to ask me out to a movie. Unfortunately, I had no interest in romance at the moment. After all, I had just managed to break free from the shackles of marriage. I figured that I might as well enjoy this

Oliver used to bend over backward for Quinn, showering her with sweet nothings and treating her with nothing but tenderness and consideration. Now that he was in trouble, not only did she refuse to help him, but she even snapped at him.He said, "Ms. White… I only did this for you and your company. He has no idea how much these contracts actually mean for the business!" "That's a matter between us. You're an outsider, so you should butt out!" That word "outsider" struck a nerve. Oliver flew into a rage. "I see how it is. I'm an outsider now, is that it? If I'm going down, I'll take you down with me!" The two of them got into a heated argument. I had time to kill, so I sat back and enjoyed the show.Just then, I received a text message from my newly hired assistant, Korra Smith. "I found a special remedy for asthma, Mr. Heathcliff. People claim that it works wonders. I left it on your desk. Be sure to drink it!"A warm feeling filled my heart. As it turned out, there really was

My sudden assertiveness caught Quinn completely off guard. As she massaged her temples, memories came flooding back to her. She suddenly remembered something, and the color drained from her face. "Did you really go into shock a few days ago?" I couldn't even be bothered to answer her. I had already told her everything that needed to be said. Whether she believed me or not, I didn't want to waste another second on Quinn. "Get out of my way," I spat out before walking right past her without an ounce of warmth in my gaze. Quinn finally panicked. She positioned herself in front of me, grasped my arm, and pleaded, "It isn't what it looks like, Julian. I seriously had no idea. I've just been so busy lately…"Please don't be mad at me. Come home with me. Let's sit down, talk this through, and clear up the misunderstanding. Can't we just go back to how things were?"Quinn probably realized that she was in the wrong this time. For once, she actually tried to placate me. Had this bee

"You must be joking, right?" Quinn's voice was filled with disbelief. It felt like years had passed since the last time I went into shock. Quinn hung up on the doctor and eyed me skeptically. "You really are something, Julian; you even managed to get the doctors at the hospital to collude with you. Is this your latest stunt to get my attention?"Her reaction was so absurd that it was almost comical. When she learned that I had gone into shock, her immediate reaction was to think that it was a joke. She even thought it was all made up, going so far as to claim that I'd colluded with the doctor. I honestly wondered if she was even using her brain. "Regardless of whether you're ill or not, I want you to step up and take care of Oliver's situation. I'll forgive all your mistakes." I took a deep breath, shook my head, and refused. "I'm afraid I can't do that. As you know, all I've done in the last few years is cook and brew traditional medicine."Quinn's eyes flickered when she he
