Chapter 2

Author: One
Once inside, I summoned the healer to bandage me. The argument with Kyle had reopened an old wound from a fall while I was gathering herbs for him.

Vivian stood off to one side, weeping helplessly. Her wound was minor, yet she cried as if she might collapse.

Kyle's expression darkened by the second, but he had no excuse to show concern for a traitor.

"Bandage Vivian's wound. I can see to mine myself."

Kyle's expression eased, but everyone else stared in shock. No one could believe their future Luna would yield the healer's attention to a lowly traitor.

Vivian's face went cold. Beneath her choked sobs, I could practically hear how badly she wanted to tear me apart.

Vivian suddenly slapped the healer's hand away and sprang to her feet. She shoved the wolf-mark bracelet into Kyle's arms, then ignored her bleeding wound and dropped to her knees before him. "Kyle, I cannot live without you. Please forgive me. Can't we be together again?"

Kyle's face twisted. He flung the bracelet aside. "Have you no shame, Vivian? You know I have a mate, yet you still try to seduce me? We are finished. I have Ophelia, and I will never love you again!"

Vivian dissolved into tears at his contempt. Oblivious to her bedraggled state, she darted to retrieve the bracelet from the mud. "You gave me this as a token of our love. Have you forgotten? I have kept it with me all this time. I made a mistake and lost you. I do not expect forgiveness. I only want to say I am sorry."

Leah, a close friend to both Kyle and me, watched Vivian's fragile display and feared no man could resist it. She leaped to my defense, dragged Vivian away from Kyle, and kicked her in the stomach. "Where were you while Kyle was fighting for his life? Oh, right - you ran straight to the enemy. Ophelia stayed. She fought beside him until the very end."

Vivian lay crumpled on the ground, yet I was the one whose face paled. I remembered exactly what had happened to Leah in my previous life.

Because Leah had defended me and hurt Vivian, Kyle had torn out her fingernails, broken all four of her limbs, and abandoned her in the wilderness. Her body was never found.

I hurried to pull Leah behind me and put an end to the farce. "No! Stop hitting her. This ends here. I don't want the festival ruined, and nobody is to hurt Vivian for my sake."

The wolves marveled at my generosity. They praised my restraint and declared me the perfect Luna. Soon the feast was lively again.

The maids brought out small cakes in every flavor, and everyone was about to reach for them.

The next second Kyle swept the chocolate cake in front of Vivian onto the floor.

Kyle's sweeping arm struck me where I stood behind him. I fell beside the blazing stove, and the heat seared my arm red as blood soaked through the bandage. Kyle did not notice a thing.

He was too busy facing Vivian down, gripping her arm and shouting furiously, "Have you forgotten you're allergic to chocolate? Are you planning to die in our pack so your new mate can come and take revenge on Ophelia and me?"

I froze. Chocolate was my favorite flavor, yet Kyle had forbidden me to eat it for months. I had assumed he disliked sweets. Now I understood: he remembered Vivian's allergy, so he had banned chocolate altogether.

Of course Vivian saw Kyle's concern for her as well. She gave me a challenging look and then leaned against Kyle and said softly, "Kyle, I know you're the one who cares about me most. I won't cause you any trouble. Even if it kills me, I won't put you in a difficult position."

Kyle's expression shifted through a dozen emotions, but I still caught the flicker of delight he could not hide. He loved Vivian after all.

Pathetic.

How had I never seen this before?

I gave a bitter laugh. I was done watching their twisted love story play out, and I brought the festival to an end.

As the others dispersed, I turned to Vivian. "There may be rogues outside the pack. You can stay at my house tonight."

Kyle looked startled. Before he could speak, I shocked him again. I dropped the moon necklace he had given me - the symbol of a Luna's exalted status - at his feet. "Kyle, I want to break the mate bond."

Kyle blinked, then laughed dismissively and stepped closer to soothe me. "Ophelia, stop this. You want to break our bond because of Vivian? She is only a traitor. You are the only one I will ever be with. We will swear it before the Moon Goddess..."

I dodged Kyle's embrace, utterly repulsed by this foolish man who had gotten my child and me killed in my previous life.

When we returned home, I went straight to my room and refused to say another word to him. Kyle did not try to coax me again. Instead, he offered to move into the study and give me space, while I put Vivian in the guest room.

That night, memories of my brutal death in my previous life kept me tossing and turning. Kyle had murdered my child merely as an offering to Vivian. My parents had been framed, driven from the pack, and left to die in the wilderness. I had perished after days of relentless torture.

All of this was merely to avenge his beloved: Vivian.

It was Leah.Kyle hesitated. "Leah, what evidence do you have that Vivian went to the back hill?"Earlier, I had asked Leah to hack Vivian's phone and summon the entire pack.Leah produced a USB drive and connected it to the large screen in the living room.Every message Vivian had exchanged with the Dark Moon Alpha appeared on the screen! The Dark Moon Alpha's recorded voice froze Vivian in place. "If you fail to bring me the map of the Silver Mane territory again, you can forget about ever receiving the antidote!""I have already convinced Kyle. He still loves me. He promised to drive Ophelia out of the pack. Once she is gone, I will have a chance to deliver the map to you."As Vivian's groveling voice filled the room, Kyle's face darkened. He turned to her in disbelief and fury. The woman he had quietly protected from every threat truly was a traitor to the pack! She had returned and begged him to take her back solely to obtain the map.Kyle shifted into wolf form and lunged at Vivi

Vivian feigned confusion. "Then who could it have been? An outsider could never have found the hidden passage so quickly."The moment she finished, the watching wolves erupted in whispers. Every suspicious gaze turned on me.They said I was jealous because Vivian had regained Kyle's affection, and that I had sold out the pack for revenge.I gave a cold laugh and calmly faced every accusing stare.Kyle fixed me with a hard stare. There was no trust in his eyes as he waited for an explanation."Ophelia, was it you who tampered with the passage on the back hill?"I almost laughed at the sight of him twisting the truth so completely. Before I could defend myself, Kyle raised one hand and issued a cold order. "Lock her in the cellar. She does not leave without my permission."Two wolf warriors stepped forward, seized my wrists, and dragged me toward the cellar.I called to Grant for help through the mind-link.Grant answered almost at once. "I am coming."Not long afterward, the cellar's ir

I drove to find Kyle. On the way, I saw Vivian had posted ten photographs in a row, each showing her fingers intertwined with his.I contacted Leah and told her everything I had overheard the previous night. Then I asked her to hack Vivian's phone and find out what she had been doing in the Dark Moon pack these past few months.Five minutes later, Leah contacted me, barely containing her excitement. "I found it!"Leah sent me several messages."No wonder Vivian is so desperate to hand you over to the Dark Moon Alpha. That man is a monster! He had never been satisfied with Vivian as his fated mate, resenting that she was only an Omega. After he learned about her past with Kyle, he grew suspicious that she would betray him just as she had betrayed Kyle.""He ordered the maids to watch her every move. Once I was home, I heard Kyle outside the door calling my name softly. "Ophelia?"Before I could answer, the door opened and Vivian's coaxing voice drifted in. "She is asleep, Kyle. Do you want to kiss me right in front of her? It would be such a thrill."Kyle crushed his mouth to Vivian's like a man possessed. Their passion mounted until I could hear every ragged breath. "Kyle, I am tired of being despised and condemned by everyone in this pack. I do not want to keep hiding with you. Are you truly going to swear yourself to Ophelia before the Moon Goddess? You still... love me."Kyle went still and fell completely silent. Vivian pressed on. "The Alpha of the Dark Moon pack needs a mate. Sending Ophelia there to become his Luna is more than she deserves. We can claim she deserted our pack. Then no one will blame me for my past mistakes, and we can finally be together!"My claws nearly tore through the sheets. I had never imagined Vivian could be so vicious. The Alpha of the Dark Moon p

Soon, Kyle knocked on my door. "Ophelia, are you asleep?"Before I could answer, the knocking stopped. Kyle had never possessed much patience where I was concerned.I slipped out of bed and crept to the door, only to see Vivian in a camisole with her arms wrapped around Kyle. "Kyle, my head hurts so much. Am I dying?"Kyle tried to push her away, but Vivian clung to his hand. "Kyle, please do not send me away or stay angry with me. I missed you every day in the Dark Moon pack. That is why I risked coming back for you."A vein bulged at Kyle's temple. He said, "I will not be taken in by your sweet talk," even as his hand slid beneath Vivian's skirt with the intimacy of a lover.Vivian laughed softly and turned as though she meant to leave. "If you truly don't want me, I'll go back to the Dark Moon pack and be their Luna right now."She had barely finished when Kyle stepped forward, seized her by the throat, and kissed her hard. "How dare you run? Am I not enough for you in bed? Why flee
