Chapter 1

The moment the Moon Goddess’ words faded, white light burst across my vision.

I shut my eyes. Then Oscar's voice came, sharp.

"Aria. Don't think trapping me into being your mate will make me love you. Know your place."

My eyes flew open.

He was right in front of me.

Not a corpse. Not stiff and cold. Alive.

"Oscar—"

The tears came before I could stop them. I threw myself at him.

He froze. Then shoved me back, his face flushing with anger.

"Don't touch me. Have you no shame?"

In my last life, after Catherine died, Oscar shut down. Year after year. I couldn't remember the last time I'd seen him angry like this.

Let him hate me. He was twenty again. High-spirited. Alive. Still Oscar.

The thought made my throat ache.

But the rush of seeing him faded. I hadn't forgotten what I'd come back to do.

I forced my voice steady.

"Oscar. You don't want me as your mate because there's already someone else. You're in love with Catherine."

His face stiffened—just for a flicker—then hardened.

"So what? The marking ceremony is tomorrow. Bit late to back out."

I smiled. The pain in my chest was almost unbearable.

"You can."

He scoffed. "I don't have time for whatever game this is. Tomorrow we keep it simple. Handle the rest yourself."

"Fill out the application. Bring it out. I'll wait."

He turned and walked out.

I watched him go, and the smile slid off my face.

Oscar and I had grown up together. He was the Alpha's son. I was the Beta's daughter.

The pack elders had pinned all their hopes on us. We trained side by side under brutal discipline, leaning on each other through years of hardship—because that was what was expected of us.

I loved him before I even knew what love was.

He'd risked his life to save me. So I assumed he loved me back.

That was why, when I learned I was his fated mate, I was over the moon.

But Oscar wasn't happy at all. That was when I finally understood—he didn't love me. But I still refused to let go.

Then came the night of the ceremony. Catherine ran out, lost control somewhere in the woods, and was killed by rogue wolves.

Watching Oscar after her death—watching him grow numb and cold, day after day—I finally understood. There had been someone else all along.

By then it was too late.

But I was here again. And this time, I wouldn't let it happen.

This time, I just wanted him to have real happiness. To live. To grow old.

Even if it meant I'd be alone for the rest of mine.

I lowered my head and wrote Catherine's name on the marking ceremony application.

Once tomorrow's ceremony went ahead, Task One would be done.

I handed him the form. He started to flip it open, but I stopped him.

I gave him a gentle look. "Read it tomorrow. There's a surprise inside."

He frowned, just slightly.

"You're acting strange. Becoming my mate has you that out of your mind?"

I didn't deny it. I nodded.

"I'm happy."

Happy to see you again.

He wasn't used to me being direct. He stared, then huffed.

I used to feel inferior because I loved him deeply. Yet the more insecure I was inside, the more I hid behind a cold, arrogant exterior, never once speaking such gentle, tender words.

Looking back, I couldn't blame him. I'd come on too sharp, too proud. Of course he'd been drawn to a girl like Catherine—soft, gentle, easy to love.

A couple walked past, laughing.

"They say tonight's a once-in-a-century supermoon. The Moon Goddess will bless Moonlight Vale. Pray together under the full moon and you'll grow old side by side. Honey, let's go."

I stopped in my tracks.

(Aria's POV)The men froze. I broke loose.Oscar and I went at them together. There were more of them, but the two of us were strong, and we'd always fought well as a team. Soon enough they were on the floor, groaning.Oscar found rope and tied them up. He stood, wiped his forehead, and the first thing out of his mouth wasn't What happened."You said yes. Just now. I heard you."When I didn't answer, his brow furrowed. "Are you taking it back?"I started to speak. He shoved me out of the way—"Look out!"A gunshot. My head went white. I lost it. I grabbed a knife and drove it into the gunman, again, and again. He went still in seconds.I called the ambulance with shaking hands. I knelt next to Oscar and pressed down on the wound, hard, useless. The blood wouldn't stop. I pressed and it kept coming. Silver bullet.Just like last time. Was this what was waiting for him every time he was with me. Was he going to keep dying for me. Over and over.I sobbed. "I said yes. I said yes. Just sta

(Aria's POV)For the next few days, Oscar didn't show up.But I felt him everywhere.A fresh bouquet on my desk every morning. Eyes on me on the walk home from work. A hot dinner waiting on the table when I got in.Didn't he have a pack to run?I rubbed my temple, feeling resigned.Three days came faster than I expected.I went home with a flutter of unease, my heart racing. I was distracted even during dinner.I still couldn't decide. It wasn't only that I doubted what we had. It was that I hadn't forgotten my mission.Task one. [Don't become Oscar's mate.]If I said yes to him, then for the rest of our lives, we'd never be able to fully bond. No marking ceremony. No mate bond.Just two hearts holding on. How long could that last? And was that fair to him?A knock at the door pulled me out of it.Oscar.My pulse spiked. I took a breath and opened the door.It wasn't Oscar.Three big men were standing on my doorstep. Scars and tattoos covered them. The one in front had a long scar down

(Aria's POV)I had waited years to hear him say that. But he was too late.I kept my voice level. "You're too late, Oscar. Go home."He grabbed my hand. The look in his eyes was something close to desperate."Why? Did you fall for someone else?""No, I just—""If it's not someone else," he cut in, voice rising, "then why are you suddenly leaving? You loved me, didn't you? Or was that all an act this whole time? Was it the prophecy. You only pretended because of the prophecy."I hadn't expected that. I didn't know what to say.His expression broke. "So you were lying. The whole time."I stayed quiet for a long moment. "I wasn't lying, Oscar. I really did love you. We grew up together. We went through too much. There's no way that doesn't turn into something. The day I learned I was your fated mate was the happiest day of my life.""But you kept pushing me away. You and Catherine ended up together. Catherine is the one you wanted."His words came fast and rough. "No. I never wanted her.

(Oscar's POV)"Oscar—you—" My father was shaking with rage. "What is this supposed to mean? You're backing out?"My voice was flat. "Backing out? I never said I'd marry Catherine. You decided that for me."He raised a trembling finger at me. "You stop this nonsense! You've been in love with her for years. Everything's lined up. Are you going to throw away the prophecy and damn this entire pack?""If a fated mate bond can swap that easily, then how much faith should we be putting in this prophecy?"I said it carefully, one word at a time. "Nothing in this world is fated. And if anything tries to be, I'll grind it under my boot."I turned to leave.Outside the door was a wall of bodyguards. My father barked at them. "Take Oscar to get changed. He's attending the marking ceremony."I swept my eyes across them. I didn't say a word. They stepped aside. My father's face went red with humiliation. He shouted at them, "I'm the Alpha of Windvale Pack. You worthless dogs—are you turning on me?"

(Oscar's POV)Catherine. My fated mate?“Are you kidding me?”Before I could process it, Catherine pushed past everyone in the doorway and threw herself at me.The second I saw her, I felt it—that bond. Familiar and wrong at the same time.My wolf was back. But something was off with him. Way off.How else could he insist that the woman in front of me was my fated mate?Catherine's eyes were shining with tears. "Oscar. Oscar, this whole time—it was us. We're each other's fated mates. We can be together.""No—"It was out of my mouth before I could stop it.Then my father's voice came down on me from behind, hard."No what? Oscar, do you think this is a game? Go change. The marking ceremony with Catherine is starting."I turned to him, stunned. "What is this. Aria is my fated mate."He let out a long sigh. "Aria knew you loved Catherine. The prophecy can't be ignored. So she asked the Moon Goddess to transfer the fated mate bond from you and her to you and Catherine."The assistant besi

(Oscar's POV)The bag of food hit the floor. Soup splattered across the tile. Then came my own voice—shouting before I could think."What did you say?"I forced myself still. I took two steps toward the door, and my legs gave out. My assistant caught me before I hit the ground."Where is she? Take me to her. Now."I rushed to the room and shoved the door open."Sir, wait—you can't go in yet."The nurses tried to block me. I pushed past them.I stumbled to the bedside. My hand shook as I lifted the sheet from her face.I froze."This… isn't Aria."A nurse stepped up and pulled the sheet back over the body, arms crossed."Aria? She's downstairs. She passed out from giving too much blood—she's resting in a different room. This patient just shares a name. You've got the wrong room. Don't pull this kind of thing again. Have some respect for the dead."She paused, then added, "And next time, don't lie to the nurses. We understand you wanted to save the patient, but you put her at serious ris
