Chapter 2

작가: Snail
There was a light knock on the door, interrupting Romina and me as we cried.

Dr. Conti, Romina's attending physician, came in and checked her medical chart at the foot of the bed. After scanning the indicators, he nodded approvingly.

"I bring good news, Mrs. Panzeri. We've found a matching kidney donor. Considering Ms. Panzeri's condition, we can schedule the transplant to take place in three days."

Elated, I covered my mouth. Tears streamed down my face. Even Romina held my hand in disbelief, repeatedly asking me, "Is this real, Mommy? I won't have to die anymore?"

In our previous life, Romina waited until her dying breath without ever finding a suitable match. The memories of her dying in pain were etched into my memory.

Dr. Conti bent down and smiled at her, saying, "Of course you won't die. This is a very common procedure, and the surgeon who's operating on you, Dr. Bruno, is the best surgeon in the world. You should trust that your father has made the best arrangements for you."

Romina looked at me hesitantly, as if seeking confirmation. "Is that true, Mommy? Did Daddy really arrange everything for me?"

Forcing down my tears, I nodded, telling her a white lie. "It's true, darling. Daddy loves you very much. The moment he found out about your illness, he arranged everything for you."

It wasn't surprising that Romina found it hard to believe.

Two years ago, after Camilla's husband, Riccardo Mancini, died, he left behind a vast fortune and control over the entire port district.

Under the pretext of "looking after the widow of a deceased friend", Giulio began to spend all of his nights at Camilla's estate. He took out all of the potential threats against her and suppressed the other members of the Mancini family who had their eyes on Riccardo's assets.

He was present for every important milestone in Nico's life. Even when Nico's school held parent-child activities, he would push aside all of his important meetings to attend the events in person.

Yet he missed out on his own daughter's birthdays and events. In fact, when she got bullied in school, he simply said indifferently, "As the daughter of a mafia don, you're an embarrassment to me."

Those two years had been enough for me to realize that Giulio didn't love Romina or me. The only ones in his heart were Camilla and Nico.

Romina thoughtfully wiped away my tears, her eyes bright. "Mommy, if Daddy loves me, does that mean we won't have to leave anymore?"

It felt like something was squeezing my heart tightly, the pain almost suffocating me. After a long silence, he said quietly, "That's right. If he loves you, Romy, we'll give him another chance, okay?"

She hesitated for a moment before saying with an earnest expression, "It can't just be me, Mommy. He has to treat you well, too!"

With a gentle gaze, I stared at her as if she were my entire world. "Okay."

Romina was full of anticipation as she waited for Giulio, but even until it was time for her surgery, he didn't show up.

Outside the operating room, she held my hand in disappointment, her eyes constantly flicking toward the end of the corridor.

I forced down the bitterness in my heart and assured, "Daddy is just too busy, Romy. I'll be here with you, okay? Just go in for the surgery and don't worry about anything. I'll be right here waiting for you. I won't go anywhere."

Romina was silent for a while before she nodded obediently. "I understand, Mommy. I'll be a good girl. No matter whether Daddy comes to accompany me or not, I'll still love both of you."

My eyes turned red. Just as I got ready to let the medical team wheel her into the operating room, an entertainment news report started playing on the television on the wall of the corridor.

In a hyped-up voice, the announcer reported, "Tonight, Giulio Panzeri, Don of the Panzeri family, was photographed accompanying Camilla Messina and her son at Montelupo Amusement Park.

"In the photos, the three appeared to be very affectionate with each other. It is suspected that they are already living together.

"Sources report that the young boy has also privately started addressing Don Giulio as his father."

On the large screen, the secretly recorded live footage was playing.

Giulio was holding Nico in one arm, lowering his head to wipe the ice cream off the corner of Nico's mouth. Camilla stood beside them with a gentle, blissful smile.

I wanted to step forward to hide the screen from Romina. But at that very moment, the scene took a sudden turn.

Nico, who'd been giggling hard at first, suddenly clutched his throat. His small face quickly turned red. He coughed violently a few times before gasping as if he couldn't breathe, and he slipped right out of Giulio's arms.

Luca lunged forward and snatched the gun from Giulio's hand.Giulio crashed onto the bed, as if completely drained. He shouted hoarsely, "Go away! I'm going to join them!"Panting heavily, Luca reported urgently, "I've found them, Don Giulio!"Giulio looked up at once, his eyes bright with hope. "What did you say?""I found out that not long after Mrs. Panzeri left the hospital, an ambulance arrived to pick them up. A convoy of black Maybachs escorted them out of the city at top speed. I'm sure Romy and Mrs. Panzeri are still alive!""Romy and Alessia are still alive… They're still alive…" Giulio repeated shakily."But…" Luca's voice turned quiet. "The convoy disappeared after leaving Montelupo. It's as if they'd vanished into thin air. We couldn't find any trace of them anywhere."Giulio's heart sank once more.As the most powerful mafia don in Montelupo, he was more powerful than one could imagine. Yet now, he couldn't even find his own wife and daughter.Clenching his fists

Giulio stared at Camilla in utter disbelief. Never did it ever occur to him that she'd mistakenly assumed that Nico was his child all along.Staring at her contorted expression, he felt nothing but disappointment."Nico isn't my son, Camilla. I only spent the last few years helping you and protecting you out of consideration for our childhood friendship. I never felt even the slightest trace of romantic feelings for you."Camilla refused to believe it. Eyes red, she vehemently shook her head. "That's impossible! You've always taken care of me and looked after Nico, too! Isn't that a sign of your love?"Once Giulio saw how stubbornly she was clinging to her logic, not a trace of warmth remained in his voice. "I only took care of you because I pitied you for raising a child alone. That's all."Camilla's emotions began to spiral out of control. "You're lying to me! It was you that night… When I woke up, I saw you right there beside me—"Giulio cut her off, stating clearly, "You got

Just as Camilla had hoped, when Giulio arrived at the hospital, Romina and I were nowhere to be found.Enraged, he stormed into Dr. Marino's office and grabbed him by the collar, roaring in fury, "Where is my daughter, Romina Panzeri!"Shaking in alarm, Dr. Marino stared at him in disbelief. "Romina Panzeri… is your daughter? I don't know where she and her mother have gone."Still being held by the collar, Dr. Marino continued to stammer, "I-I really don't know where they are, Don Giulio. They already left the hospital!""They left?"Giulio stiffened. In his shock, he loosened his grip a little, but he soon slammed Dr. Marino hard against the wall, pressing him against it. "Why wasn't a single doctor available to save my daughter on the day of her surgery?"Dr. Marino turned pale as he hastily explained, "I did as you instructed and had all the doctors in the hospital focus on saving Ms. Messina's son! We were just following your orders. We would never dare to disobey them!"Giu

The car had just come to a stop when Camilla eagerly opened the door and got out. She took Nico's hand and walked straight up the steps of the mansion.Marco Lombardo, the butler, hurried out of the mansion, but he froze when he saw Camilla. He was just about to ask a question when she declared, "Don Giulio has arranged for us to stay here for a while. Bring down our things."Even though her tone was calm and even, she'd spoken loud enough for everyone to hear her. The household staff exchanged looks, but no one dared to stop her.Camilla slowly scanned the entire estate, her eyes gleaming with triumphant glee. Considering how much Giulio doted on her and Nico, she was certain she would soon be able to secure her position as the lady of the estate. Thus, she deliberately raised her voice and instructed the staff, "Take Nico's things and put them in a south-facing room. Make sure you tidy it up properly."Giulio had already gotten out of the car as well. After entering the living r

Back in the hospital room, Camilla felt a secret rush of delight when she saw that Giulio had been swayed by her words and decided to stay. However, she continued to put on a hurt and pitiful expression, sighing as she said, "Giulio, why can't Alessia be more sensible about the right time for her to throw a tantrum? "Nico was in such a dangerous condition. Why couldn't she be more understanding? Instead, she insisted on being so unreasonable at a time like that."Her words made Giulio's expression darken even further."She's always been like this," he said in annoyance. "She only ever cares about her own feelings and never knows how to put herself in someone else's shoes."Camilla nodded before adding with a tone of conviction, "Just wait and see. She's just being jealous of me. I bet she'll start spamming your phone with calls."Giulio let out a helpless sigh. "I've already made all the arrangements for Romina's surgery, yet she still needs me to handle everything."With that

My mind went completely blank. I felt like I'd been shoved into an icy lake.Meanwhile, Camilla cackled gleefully."How does it feel to watch as your daughter dies right before your very eyes, Alessia? If anything, you can only blame yourself for not knowing your place. You stole my position as Giulio's wife and forced me to marry a man who wasn't right for me."It's too late. Nothing you say will change anything. Just slowly relish the feeling of losing everything!"She strutted off triumphantly. The bodyguards had already disappeared down the corridor with Dr. Bruno.I tried to go after them, but the panicked young nurse grabbed me, her voice trembling as she informed me, "Ms. Fontana, all the doctors in the hospital have been called away by Don Giulio… You need to think of something! The patient can't hold out much longer!"I forced down the rising panic in my chest and called Giulio's again and again, but he didn't take my calls. My body was shaking, and the situation in the
