Chapter 4

作者: snow
I pulled my hand free from his grasp, my voice calm.

“I threw away some trash.”

Trash that neither of us wanted anymore.

Vito didn’t look into it.

He merely shoved me impatiently toward the bathroom and told me to wash the cigarette smell off me before coming back out.

I had no intention of arguing with him.

I still had a month before I left, so for now, I had to keep using this place as somewhere to stay.

After my shower, I realized I had forgotten to bring clean clothes.

Wrapping myself in a bath towel, I walked out.

Vito was lounging on the sofa, flipping through the family’s intelligence files.

Hearing me, he turned his head.

His gaze lingered on me for two seconds.

“What? You’re not going to get dressed?”

I was just about to explain when he stood up and walked straight toward me.

He grabbed me and forced me down onto the sofa.

His warm breath brushed against my neck, and a dark look surfaced in Vito’s eyes.

“Trying to seduce me on purpose? Hmm?”

As he spoke, his hand began wandering over my body.

I raised my leg to keep some distance between us and pinned his wrist down with one hand, my voice cold.

“Doesn’t Mia have a thing about cleanliness?”

Vito’s expression darkened.

Without another word, he began pulling at the bath towel wrapped around me.

“I think you’ve been throwing this tantrum for long enough these past few days.”

“Fine. Just give in to me for once. Let’s see if you can still come up with so many excuses—”

Before he could finish, the vibration of his communicator interrupted him.

Vito immediately pushed himself up and answered the call.

We were close enough that I could clearly hear the tears in Mia’s voice on the other end.

“Vito, it’s all my fault. If it weren’t for me, you and Serafina wouldn’t have ended up like this. Maybe I should just die.”

A moment later, there was a sharp metallic clang as something that sounded like a blade hit the floor.

Vito instantly panicked.

“How could this be your fault? I’m coming over right now!”

As he spoke, he grabbed me and pulled me up from the sofa.

“You explain to Mia that we didn’t have a fight!”

I took the communicator from him.

Looking at Vito’s anxious face, I smiled.

“We didn’t have a fight, Mia. You don’t have to keep pretending—”

“Slap!”

A sharp slap landed across my face.

Vito glared at me in uncontrollable fury.

After ending the call, his face had turned livid.

“Serafina, what the hell are you talking about? What do you mean, Mia is pretending?”

“You insist on making a scene, don’t you? Fine. I’ll see how you manage without me!”

With that, he called his underboss right in front of me and ordered him to freeze the black card reserved exclusively for my use.

Only after doing all that did his expression ease slightly.

He looked down at me condescendingly.

“Don’t you feel wronged? Don’t you think you’re the one in the right?”

“The day you refuse to apologize to Mia is the day I refuse to restore access to that card.”

With that, he grabbed his coat and stormed out, slamming the door behind him.

I lay quietly on the sofa.

There wasn’t the slightest ripple in my heart, though the corners of my eyes grew slightly damp.

In the past, whenever I fought with Vito because of Mia, I had always held on to the little affection left between us, afraid to say what I really thought.

I had never truly seen Vito for the man he was.

Now that I had finally let go completely, I realized that in Vito’s eyes, I was nothing more than something he could control whenever he pleased.

I shook my head and stared at the door he had slammed shut, feeling nothing but desolation.

What Vito didn’t know was that the card he had given me had already been taken by Mia.

In all these seven years, I had never spent a single cent of his money.

Vito didn’t come back after that night, and I was more than happy to enjoy the peace and quiet.

But that peaceful life lasted less than two days.

Vito suddenly returned to the estate, wearing a rather complicated expression.

Seeing me sitting at the table eating a simple meal, he said nothing and went straight into the kitchen.

Before long, three dishes and a soup were set on the table.

He threw the meal container in my hand into the trash, pulled me into a seat, and began serving food onto my plate.

I didn’t touch my utensils.

He gave me a heavy look before letting out a sigh.

“Why didn’t you tell me sooner that Mia had taken the card?”

My heart tightened.

I looked at him instinctively, only to hear him continue.

“You should’ve told me. I could’ve just given you a new card. It’s not a big deal that Mia used the other one.”

“Now look what happened. Her card got declined at a luxury boutique, and she was humiliated in front of everyone. It took me forever to calm her down.”

He pulled a brand-new black card from the inner pocket of his suit and pushed it across the table toward me.

“Take it. It’s a new card. Consider it a little compensation for everything I’ve owed you over the years.”

But I didn’t go over to acknowledge him.I pretended we were complete strangers and walked right past him.He didn’t call out to me either, probably because he still remembered what I had told him.And so, I walked ahead while he followed behind. The short half-hour journey passed quickly, and soon we arrived at the apartment building.Vito finally couldn’t hold back anymore and called my name.“Serafina.”I didn’t turn around.I pushed open the door and walked inside. From then on, I could see the figure of a man almost every day—outside my company, on a bench by the roadside, or in the narrow alley beside my apartment. But from beginning to end, the two of us never actually said a word to each other.A few days later, Vito sent me a message.“Can we meet?”For some reason, I agreed. It had only been a month since I last saw him, but Vito had lost a lot of weight. His entire body seemed shrouded in a layer of exhaustion and despair.Sitting in a bar on a street corner, he repeatedly r

After the plane landed, I took a taxi to the apartment I had rented in advance.Once everything was settled and my luggage was put away, my phone, which had been powered off for so long, automatically restarted. The moment the screen lit up, a flood of missed calls and messages appeared. They were all from Vito.Call after call kept coming through. After hesitating for a moment, I finally answered. The other end was noisy, with airport announcements and the footsteps of people passing by in the background. The airport? The next second, Vito spoke.“I found out where you landed. I’m coming to you right now. Please wait for me, okay?”“We’ll go see your family, then get engaged. From now on, you can do whatever you want. I’ll listen to you about everything, Serafina—”“Vito, have you lost your mind?”The thought of having him follow me even after I had left the city made me sick, so I coldly cut him off.Vito could hear the disgust in my voice, and there was hurt in his tone when he aske

I got to my feet and pulled open the door. Mia, trembling with rage, shoved me aside and stormed into the room. The moment she saw that Vito was no longer drunk, she froze for a second before immediately putting on that familiar, wounded expression.“Mr. Moretti, what are you doing here? I waited for you all night at home.”“Come on. Let’s go home.”As she spoke, she reached out to grab Vito’s hand, only for him to shake her off.Vito’s face was colder than I had ever seen it. His voice was low as he said,“Go home first. Serafina and I have something to talk about.”This was the first time Vito had ever rejected Mia to her face. Her eyes instantly reddened, and tears spilled down her cheeks as her voice trembled.“You’re choosing Serafina over me?”“Vito, you said you’d always take care of me and treat me well. Were all those promises lies?”“No, you wouldn’t lie to me. Did Serafina say something to you?”The next second, Mia turned toward me, hatred filling her eyes, and lunged forwa

What a lunatic.I couldn’t be bothered to exchange another word with her.I turned around, grabbed my suitcase, and walked straight out.Seeing how smug Mia looked, I figured she still had no idea that Vito and I had already broken things off for good. All the better.Let her keep basking in this victory she had staged for herself and enjoy her own little fantasy.I had booked a quiet hotel in the city center in advance, for one week.A week later, I would leave this city, which was controlled by the Moretti family, for good and head toward an entirely new life. That very night, Vito called me.I didn’t answer. After several unanswered calls, he started sending me messages instead. At first, he demanded to know why I had hit Mia.Later, he began asking where I had gone and whether I really intended to cut ties with him completely. Those two really were made for each other. They kept coming up with new variations of the same performance.I didn’t want to get dragged into their mess anym

Vito loosened his grip, and I fell onto the edge of the bed.His face went deathly pale.He stared at me in disbelief, and after a long moment, finally forced a few words through clenched teeth.“Say that again.”I lifted my head and looked at him calmly, without backing down even an inch.“I said we’re done.”I hadn’t wanted things to come to this before I left. But I had truly had enough of the endless games between Mia and Vito. They pulled something like this every few days.Anyone would have grown sick of it.Vito took a deep breath to suppress his emotions and forced out a stiff smile.“I’ll give you some time to calm down and think things through.”With that, he turned to leave. But when he reached the door, he suddenly stopped and looked back at me.“Serafina, after seven years between us, you can just cut me off with a single sentence?”“You’ve really disappointed me.”With that, he turned and walked away, leaving me sitting alone on the bed.I honestly never expected that eve

Vito’s hand froze in midair. The sleek black metal card lay silently on the table, while I made no move to take it.My gaze swept over the dishes on the table, and suddenly, I spoke.“Mia loves pistachios, doesn’t she?”Vito looked slightly surprised, clearly unable to understand why I had suddenly asked. After a moment of hesitation, he nodded.“Yeah. Mia loves them. Why?”I lifted my eyes and gave him a faint smile, each word perfectly clear.“But I’m severely allergic to pistachios, Vito.”Every Italian dish on the table had been sprinkled with crushed nuts.Even the creamy white soup was dotted with tiny pieces of pistachio. If I consumed even the smallest amount, I would break out in hives and suffer swelling in my throat. The color slowly drained from Vito’s face.He should have remembered.Back when the Moretti family had yet to secure its footing, Vito wasn’t yet the Don who held the power of life and death in his hands. We had squeezed into a tiny apartment in the old district
