Chapter 1

“Lily, after tonight, you are no longer the Countess.”

Chris stood in the middle of the dais with his hand around Lucy's waist.

“From tonight on, she will be the only lady of this land.”

The crowd buzzed with excitement.

I stood at the foot of the steps, still holding a goblet of the anniversary wine he loved.

I had made it myself seven years ago and had planned to share it with him tonight.

Now it seemed there was no point.

Lucy peeked out from Chris's arms.

“Then doesn't that make my sister a lowly slave again?”

Chris soothed her.

“Mmm. She won't mind.

“After all, she sold herself into slavery once. She's just going back to what she was.”

I tightened my grip on the goblet.

Seven years ago, my mother fell gravely ill.

I borrowed money from everyone I knew, but it still wasn't enough.

So I offered myself as collateral to a slave trader and was thrown into an arena to entertain the rich.

Just before the beast pounced, Chris cut my chains with one stroke.

He hauled me out of the pool of blood.

And he bought my slave contract outright.

That was when I fell deeply in love with him.

I never forgot what he said next.

“From now on, you're free.”

Now the memory made me want to laugh.

Chris looked at me, his voice softening.

“Lily, she just got back. Without this title, people will talk about her.

“You won't lose anything else that's yours.

“We won't cross any lines anyway.”

Chris came closer.

“So you don't need to compete with her for my attention.

“For now, she's the one who needs my love. But I can give you anything else you want.”

While I was still reeling, he took the coronet off my head.

He turned and set it on Lucy's head.

Lucy rose on her toes and hooked her arms around his neck.

“Chris, I'm the one you've loved all these years, aren't I?”

Chris ruffled her hair. That was answer enough.

Without the coronet I'd worn for seven years, my head felt strangely light.

Lucy seemed to remember something and gave me a sweet smile.

“Sister, if you don't mind, you can stay by my side as my lady's maid.

“I'll treat you well.

“After all, no one out there would treat a slave like you well.”

Her eyes fell on the ring finger of my left hand.

“You should take off that ring too, Sister.”

She tilted her head.

“After all, you're not the Countess anymore.”

Chris's voice was flat.

“Take it off.

“I know you like jewelry. Go pick out something else from the treasury.”

But Chris had forgotten that he'd gone down on one knee and slipped this ring onto my finger himself.

Whatever was left of my love for him died.

I slowly slid the ring off and set it down by the candlestick.

The guests around us began to whisper.

“So she's the one who stole her sister's man?”

“A slum girl who managed to snag an earl? She can't be anything but trash.”

Chris heard too, but he didn't contradict them. He just held Lucy tighter.

I took a deep breath.

“I've given back everything that was yours.

“Our marriage is over too.

“From now on, we owe each other nothing.”

At that, Chris looked at me again.

His tone was mocking.

“Lily, when did you learn to threaten me with such cheap tricks?

“Now's not the time to sulk.

“You and I have held this land for seven years. Do you know how many enemies we've made?

“If you leave my territory, they'll tear you to pieces, won't they?”

He paused, then smirked.

“Besides, everyone knows you love me more than life itself.

“You'd even die for me.”

The old wound in my chest suddenly throbbed.

Yeah.

I had taken an invader's arrow for him.

The arrow pierced straight through my abdomen, soaking the grass beneath me with blood.

I almost died there.

That was when he knelt beside me, held my hand, and swore he'd stand by me forever.

But now the innocent princess he'd fallen for seven years ago was back.

So he threw away those vows and me along with them.

Without a moment's hesitation.

I turned away without another glance at anyone.

I left the castle and went down to the shore.

I took the stone from my coat.

The runes glowed in my palm.

I pressed my lips to it.

“Arthur.

“Didn't you say you wanted to steal me away?

“I'll be waiting for you to set foot on the land of Borgirota tomorrow.”

Seagulls circled over the deck.I leaned against the rail, the sea wind blowing my hair into a mess.Arthur came up behind me and handed me an apple.“The men on the ship all treat you like the captain now.”I rolled my eyes.“Cut it out.”On deck, the pirates were busy. Some were drying nets, some were polishing axes, and others just grinned at me.Garrick, a burly pirate with one eye, sidled over, winking and making faces.“Captain's wife!“I hear you can find the blind spots in arrow towers?“Teach me sometime. I can't even find my own left eye.”The men around him burst out laughing.I couldn't help smiling too.“Sure. Sometime.”Arthur strode over and gave Garrick a kick.“Get back to work.“And keep your eyes off my woman.”Garrick yelped and ran off.Later, in the cabin, Garrick pored over a tattered sea chart, scratching his head.“We've lost three ships on this stretch of reef.“But if we go around, it's another seven days.”I leaned over and glanced at the chart.“No need to

The wedding was held by the sea.No guests, no speeches.Just the sea wind and a ship full of Arthur's men.Lily wore a long white dress.Arthur had kept a tailor up all night sewing it.It was simple, but it suited her beautifully. She walked toward Arthur.Arthur stood at the prow and held out his hand to her.“My bride.“Come here.”He held her hand tight.Lily looked up at him.In that moment, she saw everything clearly. She had stopped loving Chris a long time ago. That love had died on the night the coronet was taken from her head. The one she held in her heart now was the man in front of her.She rose on her toes and cupped Arthur's face. And she kissed him.No hesitation, no looking back. They embraced at the prow. The sea wind caught her white skirt and sent it billowing like snow.Far away, the castle tower rose against the sky.Chris sat slumped against the wall inside it.The wound in his stomach had already festered. He had been grazed by the axe when he lost the duel.No

Torches flickered ominously in the judgment hall.I sat in the high seat. That seat had once belonged to Chris. Now it was mine, and my face was calm.Lucy was held down below the bench, her hair disheveled, her whole body shaking. The courtroom was full of people.Nobles, servants, and soldiers alike.“Lucy Moran.”My voice was quiet, but every word carried.“Seven years ago, you poisoned my food, intending to take my life.“By law, that is attempted murder.“I sentence you—“To ten years in prison.”Lucy's head snapped up.“Ten years?!“What right do you have to sentence me!“You're nothing but a lowly slave!“What right do you have to sit there!”I didn't bother explaining.I gave her a single flat answer.“Because I'm the lord of this land now.“I have the authority to sentence you. I don't owe you an explanation.”The court was silent. Not one person dared make a sound.Only then did Lucy panic.“M-my mother... my mother is a noble!“You can't do this to me!“Chris! Chris!”She wa

“Stop!”Chris had gotten to his feet.He stepped in front of Lucy to shield her.“Lily, she's still your sister.“Whatever it is, let's talk it out.”Lily looked at him and laughed.“Sister?“She's no sister of mine.”Chris was at a loss for words. He gritted his teeth and turned to Arthur.“I challenge you to a duel.“If I win, you let Lucy go.”Arthur raised an eyebrow.“Oh?“Are you sure?”Chris drew his sword.“Enough talk.”Arthur smiled.“All right.”He gripped his battle-axe and slowly stepped forward.“I'll give you the chance.”The two of them faced off.For a moment, the sea wind went still.Chris moved first. His blade flashed, aimed straight at Arthur's face. The strike was fast, precise, and ruthless. It was everything he had ever learned. But Arthur simply sidestepped. The axe rose. The axe fell.“Clang.”A sharp ring. The sword in Chris's hand was hacked clean in two.Half the blade flew off and stuck in the sand. The impact drove him back several steps. His wrist had go

The navy ships reached the shore.A squad of soldiers jumped down from the deck.Their armor gleamed, and they were armed to the teeth.Lucy rushed down from the beacon tower to meet them.“Sir!”She pointed at Arthur and Lily.“It's them!“These pirates burn, kill, and loot. There's nothing they won't do!“Arrest them, quick!”Her voice was shrill, and her eyes burned with the thirst for revenge. The navy officer in the lead glanced at her.He ignored her.Instead, he walked straight up to Arthur.Everyone stared in disbelief. He dropped to one knee.“Captain.”One word, full of respect. The smile on Lucy's face froze.“You... what did you call him?”The officer stood up.“Captain.“Our boss.”He smiled.“Sorry. We're pirates too.“We stole these navy ships.”The color drained from Lucy's face.“You... stole the navy's ships?“What about the men on them?“You killed them all, didn't you!”One of the pirates poked his head out from behind.“Don't make stuff up.“We just stripped them a

The city gates opened.Chris came down from the wall.Slowly, he made his way through the soldiers who had laid down their weapons until he stood in front of Lily. The sea wind was strong. For the first time, there was humility in his voice.“Lily.“I've lost.“I'm asking you for just one thing—“Spare the people in the city.“They didn't do anything wrong.“Fair's fair. Do whatever you want with me. I won't fight it.”Lily looked at him.The man she had loved for seven years now stood before her, looking like a whipped dog.She opened her mouth, but she never got the chance to speak.“Thud.”Arthur kicked Chris in the chest.Chris staggered back several steps and fell to the ground.“You don't get to play the victim here.”Arthur looked down at him.“What happened to all that pride?“Didn't you want all-out war?“So why are you begging for mercy now?”Chris clutched his chest and said nothing.Arthur clicked his tongue and turned around.“Come on. Let's go find that little fox.”He he
