Chapter 4

Author: Shirley
My mother, Helena, saw the blood on my lips, and for a fleeting moment, a flicker of pity crossed her eyes.

In that instant, I saw the mother who had once loved me.

But the next second, Silas's muffled groan of pain grew more urgent, and she hastily averted her gaze, turning to comfort the son who "truly needed her care."

"My dear, how do you feel? Do we need to see a healer?"

I wiped the blood with the back of my hand and slowly got up from the floor. In the corner was a worn travel bag containing the few clothes I owned. I had already packed.

They watched my actions with surprise, followed by biting sarcasm.

My father, Gideon, sneered at me.

"What's this? Throwing a tantrum and running away from home? The pack's discipline is for your own good, Rowan. Why can't you see we're trying to help you?"

"Do you think running away solves anything?" my mother, Helena, said, her face a blank mask of indifference.

"Rowan, you've been like this your whole life, always running from your problems. Your father is right, we raised a coward."

Valeria settled Silas into a chair and turned to face me. There was no warmth in her eyes, only cold disgust. "Where do you think you're going?"

"Away from the Black Moon territory."

"Rowan!" Her voice rose, sharp with fury. "Do you have any idea what you're saying? The moment you step outside this territory, you are no longer a member of the Black Moon Pack!"

So much disappointment had accumulated that my heart was simply numb.

After hearing the same threat countless times, I no longer feared losing this so-called home.

Because this pack had never truly felt like home.

"Good," I said, picking up the travel bag and walking toward the door. "I was never worthy of it anyway."

I shouldered my bag and walked toward the main entrance without a backward glance.

A wave of dizziness washed over Valeria, a phantom blow striking her soul. She staggered, pressing a hand against the wall to keep from falling.

The moment she uttered those words of banishment, it felt as if she were carving out her own heart, piece by piece.

But intense pride and anger clouded her judgment.

She told herself this pain was Rowan's fault, that it was his weakness and incompetence that were causing her agony.

She still didn't understand what was happening to her, and could only grip the ornate railing of the second-floor landing, her knuckles white with the force.

The heavy door slowly opened under my hand. The night wind rushed in, swirling the dust on the floor.

There was no sound of angry smashing, but the frigid pressure that instantly filled the air behind me was bone-chilling.

"Rowan."

Valeria stood at the second-floor railing, staring down at my back, her voice dangerously cold. "If you dare to walk out that door today, don't ever expect another chance from me."

I stopped and looked back one last time at the place I once thought was home.

The moonlight cast a cold, lonely glow on the villa's walls.

"Whoever regrets this first, loses."

I slung the bag over my shoulder and stepped out the door. The night wind enveloped me, carrying the scent of freedom and the promise of death.

Valeria stood frozen, watching Rowan's retreating back. When she heard his final words, her heart clenched violently.

She knew he wasn't well.

She didn't know what harm he might come to out in the cold night. She wanted to tell him the words of banishment were spoken in anger, that she hadn't meant for him to leave.

She had the sudden urge to run after him, but Silas's gentle voice stopped her.

"Alpha Valeria, don't worry. Once he has nowhere left to go, he'll come crawling back. Then he'll understand that without you, he is nothing."

Hearing this, a strange irritation welled up inside Valeria.

She coldly averted her gaze, but no one noticed that the hand she rested on the railing was trembling slightly, her long nails nearly digging into her palm.

Three days passed.Silas huddled in the corner of the silver cell, his skin raw with burns. He finally remembered his last card. He told the guard, "I know the Alpha Female hates me now, but please, tell her this one thing. The Black Moon Pack has lost its commander and is in decline. I am the only one who can help her restore the pack to its former glory."However, when Valeria appeared before his cell, her eyes held only icy hatred."Still scheming? You murdered my mate, and now you want to take his place? The Black Moon Pack would rather fall to ruin than be led by a murderer."Valeria ordered the guards to drag him from the cell and take him to my grave. A simple stone, engraved with my name."Kneel," Valeria's command was absolute. "Repent for your sins before Rowan."Silas was forced to his knees on sharp gravel, his skin quickly breaking and bleeding. He realized then that Valeria was truly going to destroy him. After days and nights of this, Silas understood that all his hopes

My soul floated in the heavens, a silent observer to the chaos below.Ignoring Bruno's objections, Valeria stubbornly brought my body back to the Alpha villa. Her eyes red and her voice hoarse, she insisted that even in death, a mate must return to their own home.In the grand hall of the villa, as Valeria was desperately weeping over my body, the main door opened.Silas walked in with a carefree stride, the same triumphant smile on his face. He had no idea what had happened."Alpha Valeria, I'm back! The pack elders' meeting today went so smoothly. I've already convinced them to support my... Amidst the grief, my phone rang.At first, Helena thought it was a sales call. But after a few seconds, she shakily put it on speaker."Hello, Mr. Rowan. I'm calling to ask if you still need the soul sanctuary crystal you reserved? If you make a 5% deposit now, we can continue to hold it for you."Hearing the words "soul sanctuary crystal," Valeria's breath caught in her throat."So I wasn't mistaken," she whispered. "The day he went to sever the bond... he was already arranging his own funeral."Valeria's voice trembled so much she could barely form a sentence. "He mentioned a soul sanctuary to me, and I... I accused him of cursing himself."Helena and Gideon had to hold onto each other to stay upright. They finally realized that Rowan had never been lying. He had truly been walking toward his death.Gideon, fighting through his heartbreak, snatched the phone. "We'll take the crystal. Hold it for us! I want the best, the most expensive one! We owe Rowan too much. This is the only way

I floated in the air, a phantom watching everything unfold below.Without a word, Bruno led them through the diner. She rushed forward and tore off the sheet. When she saw the familiar face, her entire world collapsed. It was Rowan. Her mate.Lying there, as peaceful as if he were asleep. But he would never wake up again. The final severance of the mate bond struck her soul like a bolt of lightning. The powerful Alpha bloodline within her shattered. Her wolf spirit let out a desperate, mournful howl from within her chest."Rowan... my son... my own flesh and blood..." My mother collapsed beside the bed. Silas frantically tore through his room, his forehead beaded with cold sweat as he ripped open every drawer."Silas, what are you looking for?" Valeria's voice was as cold as a tomb.Silas whipped around, startled. "I... I'm not feeling well. I'm looking for my allergy medicine.""Looking for this?" Valeria slowly held up a small white bottle she had found in his room before he returned.Silas's face went deathly pale. He knew better than anyone that it wasn't allergy medicine. It was the special concoction he used to fake his allergic reactions."You've been exposed to so much Moonvine today. I'm taking you to the healer for a check-up," Valeria said, a cold glint in her eyes.In the pack's medical bay, after a thorough examination, the healer looked at the results in confusion. "This is very strange. Silas shows no signs of an allergy whatsoever.""Analyze the contents of this." Valeria handed the bottle to the healer.Half an hour later, the healer returned, a look of shock on his f

In the pack's council hall, Valeria was meeting with the elders to discuss border defenses when a notification chimed through her mind-link. It was a message from Rowan.Another one of his tricks, she thought, impatiently opening it.But as the recording began to play, the color drained from her face.Silas's voice came through clearly: "Since you were twelve, I've been adding wolfsbane to your food... the silver dust in your armor lining, the push off the cliff... all my handiwork... watching you grow weaker day by day has brought me so much joy..."The recording ended abruptly. The council hall fell into a dead silence. The elders exchanged shocked glances, too stunned to speak. At that moment, a violent pain erupted in Valeria's chest. It felt as if someone had struck her heart with a blunt object, as if a piece of her soul had been brutally torn away."Ah—" She let out a choked cry and spat out a mouthful of blood. In that instant, the mate bond shattered.Valeria clutched her ches
