Chapter 3

Auteur: Kaelin Veyra
Two days later, an unexpected visitor came to headquarters.

Sofia Romano.

She and her brother, Matteo Romano, were among Lucas's earliest lieutenants.

Not long after the explosion six years earlier, they'd both left.

The second Sofia walked into the reception room, she rushed over and hugged me.

"You jerk."

She thumped me twice on the shoulder, then immediately drew back.

She carefully checked me for any lingering injuries.

"Matteo was dealing with trouble in Istanbul. When he heard you were awake, he overturned the negotiating table. Now he's rushing back as fast as he can."

I couldn't help smiling.

For the first time since I'd woken up, it felt like a real reunion.

Lucas, sitting across from us, smiled a little too.

The door opened again. Chloe stood in the doorway with a tray of coffee.

Fury flashed in Sofia's eyes, and she snatched the ashtray off the table.

"What's she doing here?"

Lucas stepped in front of Chloe right away.

"Sofia, calm down. She's just bringing everyone coffee. She doesn't mean any harm. She also wants to apologize for what happened back then."

Sofia gave a cold laugh and started to speak.

Then her gaze locked on Chloe's neck.

A brilliant sapphire pendant hung there.

The old Don, Aldo Morandi, had given it to me before he died.

"That token belongs only to the Morandi family's Donna. What is it doing around her neck?"

Chloe quickly covered the necklace with her hand.

Her voice shook.

"Lucas gave it to me. I didn't know it was..."

Lucas cut in to explain, sounding a little impatient.

"After what happened to Elena, I was worried her jewelry would get lost. So I asked Chloe to keep it safe for now."

Sofia hurled the ashtray to the floor, and shards flew everywhere.

"Keep it safe?"

Sofia jabbed a finger in Lucas's face and tore into him.

"You said she'd wear those chains until she made up for what she did. But she played the helpless victim, and everyone watched you go soft! Every time she cut her wrist, you made her chain longer! Then the chains came off. She moved into headquarters. She attended family banquets in your place! Now she's even wearing the Donna's token! And you call that an apology?!"

Sofia wasn't finished.

"Lucas, how long are you going to keep lying to yourself?"

Lucas's expression grew darker by the second.

Chloe shook her head, crying so hard she swayed.

She turned and ran out the door.

Lucas hesitated, but in the end, he stayed where he was and didn't go after her.

On her way out, Sofia gave my shoulder a resigned pat.

She didn't say anything else.

That left just Lucas and me in the reception room.

The tension was suffocating.

Then a phone rang, sudden and shrill.

Lucas answered it.

His expression tightened as he listened.

Chloe's sobs came through the phone in broken bursts.

"I'll give back the necklace. I don't want the seat either. Everything I had over the past six years was stolen from her. Lucas, I'm going to jump off the Santa Rosa bell tower this minute. That should make up for it, right..."

Lucas shot to his feet.

In his scramble, he knocked over the glass of water on the table.

"Chloe! Don't you dare! Stay where you are. I'm coming right now!"

The line went dead.

He rushed to the door in a panic.

When he saw me, he stopped short.

My chest ached. I pressed a hand to it and didn't try to stop him.

"Go see her."

Relief flashed across Lucas's face.

"Elena, wait for me. I'll be back."

I couldn't think of anything to say.

All I could do was look out the window.

After he left, I went to Aldo's old office.

The room had long since been abandoned.

From the back of a drawer, I took out an old, yellowed photo.

In it, Aldo stood outside an orphanage.

He held one of my hands and one of Lucas's.

He was the one who took us in.

He taught us to shoot. He taught us to tell friend from foe.

Ten years earlier, a rival family had planted a bomb in a church.

Aldo shoved Lucas and me into the basement, but he never escaped the church himself.

That day, Lucas's face was covered in blood.

He held me tight in that dark basement.

"From now on, all we have is each other."

I sat in front of the photograph, the frame cold beneath my fingers.

Quietly, I told Aldo everything I'd seen since I woke up.

I told him that the sapphire now hung around someone else's neck.

Wind from the hills blew in through gaps around the old window.

I touched Aldo's kind face in the photo.

"Godfather, I swore I would protect this family with Lucas. But now I'm afraid I have to break that promise."

I braced myself on the edge of the table, slowly stood up, and walked to the window.I looked down the hill at the dark mass of Lucas's personal guards."Chloe did pay off the Bellini family."I turned around and looked down at him."Use your head, Lucas. Would the Bellini family really help one woman stage this elaborate charade for a measly few million euros?"The color drained from Lucas's face.I had barely finished speaking.A deafening blast erupted outside!A wave of heat ripped the window frame loose. The armored cars Lucas had parked along the road were reduced to scrap metal in a towering fireball.Matteo reacted fast.He yanked me down behind the couch for cover.A storm of bullets shattered the glass. They tore through the living room like rain."It's the Bellini family's main assault force! They're coming in!"Sofia shouted, shotgun raised. She leaned out and opened fire.Lucas hadn't lost his fighting instincts.Without thinking, he pulled the pistol from his waistband.H

Sofia came charging out of the kitchen with a black shotgun. Her eyes were fierce."I'm going to blow that bastard's head off.""Sofia, wait."I raised a hand to stop her.My voice was perfectly calm."Let him in. Sooner or later, he and I have to settle this."The front door slowly swung open.Lucas stood in the rain, facing us.He was soaked to the skin. His hair was plastered to his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot with exhaustion. He stumbled into the living room. The second he saw me sitting there, alive, his legs buckled. He nearly collapsed to his knees.Matteo stepped in front of me in a flash. He pressed the black muzzle of his gun against Lucas's chest."Lucas, you came onto my territory uninvited in the middle of the night. That's not how things are done in Sicily."Lucas didn't even look at Matteo. He ignored the gun pressed against his heart. He pushed the cold barrel aside and lurched toward me as if all his strength had left him."Elena... come home with me."His vo

Elena's POV:Matteo's hidden safe house outside Palermo.Logs crackled in the fireplace. The firelight filled the living room with warmth.Sofia brought over a steaming bowl of thick soup and pressed it into my hands."Drink up. Six years in a coma, and you're nothing but skin and bones."I held the bowl and took small sips.At last, a little warmth returned to my numb body.Matteo sat on the couch across from me.He kept his head down as he patiently cleaned a black pistol with a soft cotton cloth."Palermo's in total chaos right now. Lucas has locked down every port and airport on the island."He didn't look up. His voice was calm and steady."He knows you left with me. He's tearing the whole world apart looking for us."I set down the bowl and spoke quietly."I'm sorry for causing you so much trouble."Sofia snorted and waved it off."Spare me. How many years did we spend dodging bullets together? Who's even keeping score of who owes whom?"She pointed at Matteo and winked."Besides

Everyone in Palermo's underworld knew the Don had lost his mind.Lucas smashed nearly every piece of furniture in the villa on the hillside. The drawers were empty. The closets were empty.Elena had even taken the photo of Aldo from the old desk."Find her! Turn all of Sicily upside down if you have to, but find her!"He seized one man by the collar and roared in his face. The entire port of Palermo was locked down at once, with guards posted at every exit.In the surveillance room, they pulled up all the footage from the docks that day.Lucas stared at the screen without blinking. On the screen, rain was pouring down.Elena didn't look back. She walked straight to a man holding a black umbrella. It was Matteo. There was a loud crack.Lucas drove his fist straight through the monitor.Glass shards bit into his hand, and blood streamed down his skin."Matteo... How dare he come back and steal my woman right in front of everyone?"Chloe came in nervously with a cup of hot tea.The sight

I looked up.Matteo was holding the umbrella. The shoulder nearest me was already soaked through. He was wearing a thin black trench coat.He looked exhausted from the journey, and a streak of dried blood still marked his cheek."Are you crazy?"I looked at the empty road behind him."This is Lucas's territory. What are you doing here alone?"Matteo gave a low laugh. He took off his coat, still warm from his body, and put it around my shoulders."I came for you. Someone told me it was pouring here and that you might catch a chill."He never once looked back at the couple still kissing in the rain behind us.He just quietly tilted the umbrella a little more toward me."Come on. Sofia's already got hot soup waiting."I looked back one last time at the man who had sworn before God, in the ruins, that he would never marry anyone but me.He was still holding another woman as if she were the most precious thing in the world.I looked away and turned around.Step by step, I followed Matteo in
