Chapter 2

Auteur: Kaelin Veyra
Lucas finally came back.

His shirt was rumpled, and his hair was a mess.

He came over, but after his fingertips brushed my hand, he froze.

"Why aren't you asleep?"

I reached up and plucked a curly blond hair from his collar.

I held it up in front of his eyes.

"You fell asleep at Chloe's."

Lucas frowned.

He knocked my hand away.

"Don't be ridiculous. She has a bad cold. I just took her home."

I looked at him calmly.

"Lucas, if you've fallen for someone else, we can..."

"Elena!"

Lucas raised his voice sharply, cutting me off.

He finally took my hand and pressed it to his chest.

"After what happened to you, I couldn't live here. You were in every room. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw you lying in front of me covered in blood. Then headquarters needed someone there full-time, so I moved there."

He squeezed my hand tighter.

His heart was racing.

"Elena, I swear I won't fall for anyone else. Come back to the council with me. Your seat is still there. I'll help you make up for the six years you lost."

I looked into his eyes and didn't ask anything else.

The pain in my chest flared again.

The next day, the convoy drove into Palermo's old town.

Six years earlier, headquarters had been a rundown olive oil warehouse.

Now it was a fortress of steel and concrete.

Bulletproof glass. Electronic locks. Armed guard posts.

When I reached the entrance, a red light came on.

Two young guards exchanged a look and tightened their grip on their guns.

Lucas's expression shifted.

"What's going on?"

Chloe came down the spiral staircase.

"I didn't know she was coming today."

She hurried over to another terminal.

She entered an administrator-level passcode.

The heavy metal doors opened.

I watched in silence, my expression cold.

She didn't just know the master access code.

She controlled who came in and out of the entire headquarters.

The lobby was full of strangers. None of the brothers I'd fought and bled with were there anymore.

They bowed their heads to Lucas and addressed Chloe as Director.

When they looked at me, they just gave me polite nods.

There were 12 black chairs in the center of the council room.

I walked to my seat.

But there was a half-finished latte sitting by the armrest.

Lucas's face darkened.

"Get up."

Chloe's tears started falling.

"Last week you promised you'd officially announce today that I'm joining the inner council."

"But Elena's back," Lucas said.

At that, Chloe dabbed at her tears as if she'd been deeply wronged.

"I get it. There was never a place for me here."

She covered her face and ran out.

Vito Greco, who ran East Port, set his glass down hard.

"Don Morandi, if I may. For six years, Ms. Bennett was here checking the books at three every morning. She passed out four times, and each time she woke up and went straight back to work without even drinking water. She may not deserve all the credit, but no one can say she hasn't put in the work."

Someone else chimed in.

"Ms. Conti deserves respect, sure. But we can't let a dead..."

He stopped and caught himself.

"I mean, someone who just woke up. We can't let her take everything away from the people who've been here. It's not fair to Ms. Bennett."

Lucas slammed his fist on the table.

"Shut up."

The glasses on the table jumped.

Nobody dared say another word.

I stayed where I was and surveyed them with a cold stare.

Six years.

With her tears and wounded act, Chloe had won them all over.

In the end, Lucas waved a hand.

"Bring in a new chair. Put it at the end of the table."

He turned to me, his voice gentler.

"Elena, your seat is still yours. Sit down for a moment. I need to sort out the council transition with Chloe."

He left in a hurry.

I didn't sit in the new chair.

I took the stairs up to the top-floor office.

I looked down through the bulletproof glass.

Lucas had caught up with Chloe.

The two of them slipped behind a shipping container.

If I hadn't been so high up, I never would have spotted the hidden corner.

Chloe was sobbing so hard she shook.

She pounded her fists against Lucas's chest.

This was the Don all of Palermo feared, a man who could order a killing on a whim.

And he just stood there.

He let her take it all out on him.

He didn't back away even one step.

I braced myself on the edge of the table, slowly stood up, and walked to the window.I looked down the hill at the dark mass of Lucas's personal guards."Chloe did pay off the Bellini family."I turned around and looked down at him."Use your head, Lucas. Would the Bellini family really help one woman stage this elaborate charade for a measly few million euros?"The color drained from Lucas's face.I had barely finished speaking.A deafening blast erupted outside!A wave of heat ripped the window frame loose. The armored cars Lucas had parked along the road were reduced to scrap metal in a towering fireball.Matteo reacted fast.He yanked me down behind the couch for cover.A storm of bullets shattered the glass. They tore through the living room like rain."It's the Bellini family's main assault force! They're coming in!"Sofia shouted, shotgun raised. She leaned out and opened fire.Lucas hadn't lost his fighting instincts.Without thinking, he pulled the pistol from his waistband.H

Sofia came charging out of the kitchen with a black shotgun. Her eyes were fierce."I'm going to blow that bastard's head off.""Sofia, wait."I raised a hand to stop her.My voice was perfectly calm."Let him in. Sooner or later, he and I have to settle this."The front door slowly swung open.Lucas stood in the rain, facing us.He was soaked to the skin. His hair was plastered to his forehead, and his eyes were bloodshot with exhaustion. He stumbled into the living room. The second he saw me sitting there, alive, his legs buckled. He nearly collapsed to his knees.Matteo stepped in front of me in a flash. He pressed the black muzzle of his gun against Lucas's chest."Lucas, you came onto my territory uninvited in the middle of the night. That's not how things are done in Sicily."Lucas didn't even look at Matteo. He ignored the gun pressed against his heart. He pushed the cold barrel aside and lurched toward me as if all his strength had left him."Elena... come home with me."His vo

Elena's POV:Matteo's hidden safe house outside Palermo.Logs crackled in the fireplace. The firelight filled the living room with warmth.Sofia brought over a steaming bowl of thick soup and pressed it into my hands."Drink up. Six years in a coma, and you're nothing but skin and bones."I held the bowl and took small sips.At last, a little warmth returned to my numb body.Matteo sat on the couch across from me.He kept his head down as he patiently cleaned a black pistol with a soft cotton cloth."Palermo's in total chaos right now. Lucas has locked down every port and airport on the island."He didn't look up. His voice was calm and steady."He knows you left with me. He's tearing the whole world apart looking for us."I set down the bowl and spoke quietly."I'm sorry for causing you so much trouble."Sofia snorted and waved it off."Spare me. How many years did we spend dodging bullets together? Who's even keeping score of who owes whom?"She pointed at Matteo and winked."Besides

Everyone in Palermo's underworld knew the Don had lost his mind.Lucas smashed nearly every piece of furniture in the villa on the hillside. The drawers were empty. The closets were empty.Elena had even taken the photo of Aldo from the old desk."Find her! Turn all of Sicily upside down if you have to, but find her!"He seized one man by the collar and roared in his face. The entire port of Palermo was locked down at once, with guards posted at every exit.In the surveillance room, they pulled up all the footage from the docks that day.Lucas stared at the screen without blinking. On the screen, rain was pouring down.Elena didn't look back. She walked straight to a man holding a black umbrella. It was Matteo. There was a loud crack.Lucas drove his fist straight through the monitor.Glass shards bit into his hand, and blood streamed down his skin."Matteo... How dare he come back and steal my woman right in front of everyone?"Chloe came in nervously with a cup of hot tea.The sight

I looked up.Matteo was holding the umbrella. The shoulder nearest me was already soaked through. He was wearing a thin black trench coat.He looked exhausted from the journey, and a streak of dried blood still marked his cheek."Are you crazy?"I looked at the empty road behind him."This is Lucas's territory. What are you doing here alone?"Matteo gave a low laugh. He took off his coat, still warm from his body, and put it around my shoulders."I came for you. Someone told me it was pouring here and that you might catch a chill."He never once looked back at the couple still kissing in the rain behind us.He just quietly tilted the umbrella a little more toward me."Come on. Sofia's already got hot soup waiting."I looked back one last time at the man who had sworn before God, in the ruins, that he would never marry anyone but me.He was still holding another woman as if she were the most precious thing in the world.I looked away and turned around.Step by step, I followed Matteo in
