Chapter 2

Author: Bowl of Rice
Wendy hurried toward me and exclaimed in surprise, "Yoli, it really is you.

"What brings you to the hospital? Are you here because you're not feeling well from the pregnancy too?"

The moment she finished speaking, Richard hurried after her, his voice anxious yet affectionate.

"Wen, I only went to get you a jacket. How did you manage to disappear on me? The air conditioning is always so cold in the hospital. You need to wear something warmer indoors, or you'll catch a chill."

Only after he finished speaking did he seem to notice me standing in front of him.

He froze for a moment before asking guiltily, "Why did you come to the hospital alone? Where's the maid?"

I didn't answer. I simply stared at him in silence.

My gaze seemed to make him uncomfortable, so he reluctantly began to explain.

"I promised Wen a few days ago that I'd come with her to her prenatal checkup.

"I was worried you'd overthink it. You've gotten upset about things like this several times before. Besides, we're getting married tomorrow. I just figured it was better not to make things more complicated, so I kept it from you."

I responded quietly, showing little reaction.

Richard seemed to think the matter was settled, so he casually picked up his jacket and helped Wendy put it on.

He even carefully fastened the buttons for her, one by one.

Wendy tilted her head, studying my pale face with a look of pity and smug satisfaction.

Feigning annoyance, she said, "Richard, what are you doing?

"Yoli's right here. You should put the jacket on her first. Why are you putting it on me?"

He didn't even look up.

"It's fine. She's healthy.

"You're carrying my—"

He suddenly stopped halfway through the sentence.

His expression changed, as if he had suddenly come to his senses. He shot me a quick glance and immediately corrected himself.

"I... I mean, my little brother. I need to take good care of him."

I had no interest in watching any longer.

It had already started raining outside, and judging by the look of it, the rain was only going to get heavier.

I made up an excuse, intending to leave.

"I still have some tests to do, so I'll go first."

But Richard suddenly grabbed my arm.

I turned around. He pointed to the umbrella in my bag and said matter-of-factly, "If you don't need it right away, let me borrow this umbrella.

“The rain looks pretty heavy. I'm worried Wendy might get drenched on the way to the car. Summer rain usually stops quickly. It'll probably have stopped by the time you're done with your tests, so you won't need it anyway."

I looked at him, the corners of my eyes slightly red.

In a hoarse voice, I demanded, "She's pregnant, so she needs to be taken care of. What about me?

"Richard, I'm carrying your baby too."

Seeing me like this, he assumed I was about to start crying again.

He waved his hand impatiently, his voice full of dismissiveness and irritation.

"Forget it. I don't need it.

"I ask to borrow one thing from you, and you have to make such a fuss about it. Wendy's always been in poor health. Even if you get a little wet in the rain, you'll recover quickly. You came here for your prenatal checkup alone, didn't you? And you look perfectly fine. Stop making a fuss over nothing, will you?"

With that, he put an arm around Wendy and walked away with her.

As they walked off, I could still hear him muttering under his breath.

"Being pregnant has turned her into a complete lunatic.

"I really can't stand her anymore."

He spoke loudly, as if he wanted to make sure I heard him.

As if he wanted to hurt me on purpose.

My tears suddenly stopped. I forced them back until my eyes felt dry and raw.

The hurt and hatred surging through me were so overwhelming that even breathing hurt.

My legs went weak, and I could barely stand. I staggered over to a bench and sat there for a long while.

Then I called the private investigator from earlier.

"Do you still have backups of those intimate photos you took of the two of them? Print fifty thousand copies. I'll buy every single one.

"Find someone to plaster them all over the new home.

"Tomorrow, when he comes to pick me up, stuff those explicit photos into the confetti cannons. I want them raining down on everyone."

But Richard stared blankly outside. At some point, the sky had darkened, and heavy raindrops hammered against the terminal's glass facade. He glanced at the torrential rain outside before turning to look at me."Yoli, it's raining again."I didn't bring an umbrella."I suddenly remembered a rainy day just like this one five years ago.Richard hadn't brought an umbrella that day either. He stood there, drenched and miserable, at the entrance of the academic building. When I saw his rain-soaked profile, my heart skipped a beat. I opened my umbrella and invited him to walk over with me."Thanks. I'm Richard Johnson, a sophomore majoring in finance."Back then, I thought this must be fate. But now, looking at the disheveled man standing before me, it felt like a lifetime ago.I pulled a black folding umbrella from the side pocket of my luggage and pressed it into Richard's hand.He held the umbrella handle in a daze, his fingers trembling slightly.I looked at him, my heart as still as a s

We sat across from each other at a table by the window.Richard remained silent, his hands clasped on the table. His lips moved several times, but each time, he seemed unable to get the words out.I glanced at my watch, frowning slightly. There was a hint of impatience in my voice."Whatever it is, just say it. I have somewhere to be."He finally spoke, his voice barely more than a whisper at first."I'm sorry. I've been texting you lately, but you never replied."I know you blame me. You have every right to. I blame myself too. I was an asshole!"He raised his head. His eyes were slightly red, as if he had made up his mind after a great deal of hesitation."After everything that's happened, I finally see things clearly. You're the only person in this world who has ever truly cared about me. I was blinded before. I had no idea how lucky I was..."He suddenly leaned toward me and reached for the back of my hand, his voice pleading."Yoli, can we start over? I promise, there'll never be

With that, I hung up.But my phone screen kept lighting up as Richard bombarded me with text messages like a madman. At first, his messages were full of rage and accusations."Why did you abort the baby?"Yolanda, are you out of your mind? How could you make such a huge decision without even talking to me?"That was my child! What right did you have to abort the baby on your own?"After that, the messages took a sharp turn, becoming increasingly remorseful and pleading."Yoli, I'm sorry. I said that out of anger. Please come back. I really know I was wrong."We'll have more children. I promise I'll be a good husband and father from now on. Let's stop fighting, okay?"My dad is gone. The baby is gone. Wendy is gone too. You're all I have left. You're the only one who truly loves me! Yoli, please come back. I can't lose you too."The glow from the screen flickered across my face.I stared at those messages as though I were watching a poorly rehearsed circus act. There had been a time whe

The whole thing was quite a spectacle. The fact that a wedding had turned into a caught-in-the-act scandal involving a stepmother and her stepson was sensational enough on its own. To make matters worse, the Johnson family was one of the area's leading business families.A scandal like this involving a wealthy family was exactly the kind of juicy spectacle people couldn't resist.Normally, a scandal like this would have been locked down immediately. The family would have paid enough hush money to make sure it never saw the light of day. Anyone reckless enough to report it would have been hit with a lawyer's letter and sued into the ground.Yet not a single one of the dozens of media outlets there that day received any hush money. The articles weren't taken down. Instead, they spread across the internet like wildfire.Six or seven of the top ten trending topics were about the scandal."Sleep With His Father, Then His Son? The entire room fell silent for a few seconds."You bastard! You fucking bastard!"A furious roar shattered the silence.Richard's uncle, Alexander's older brother, was the first to charge forward. He grabbed Richard by the collar and slammed a fist into his face."How can you face your dead father after this?"Alexander hasn't even been gone for six months, and you're already sleeping with your father's woman! Are you even human?"He was trembling with rage as he angrily hurled the photos from the floor at Richard's face. The punch sent Richard stumbling backward, blood spilling from the split corner of his mouth. He wanted to explain, to argue back, but as he stared at the humiliating photographs scattered across the floor and saw the contempt, shock, and disgust in the eyes of the relatives and friends around him, every word caught in his throat. At the same time, Richard's aunt sprang into action.Like a whirlwind, she charged toward Wendy, who was already white with fear. She rais

Thunder boomed outside, and a blinding flash of lightning lit up the entire sky.I looked at Richard, his face twisted with fury, and Wendy, nestled smugly in his arms.I suddenly shook my head and laughed.Richard froze. "You..."I didn't give him a chance to say anything else. I calmly wiped the corner of my mouth, got to my feet, grabbed my bag, pushed open the villa door, and walked out.I held up the umbrella I had refused to give Richard and walked into the rain.Half my body was soon drenched, and I shivered violently from the cold. But my steps never wavered.Another bolt of lightning flashed. It was as if it had suddenly jolted Richard back to his senses. Listening to the heavy rain pounding outside, he realized that he'd been too harsh with his words. After all, it was pouring outside, and I was pregnant.A sudden wave of panic hit him, and he wanted to go after me.But the moment he broke free, Wendy wrapped her arms around him again."Richard, don't go.
