Chapter 3

Author: Bowl of Rice
By the time I got home, Richard had already had dinner with Wendy.

He was curled up on the couch with her, watching a soap opera and even laughing as they discussed the plot.

"If I were the female lead, I'd just break up with him. Why drag it out like this?"

Wendy giggled and leaned against Richard's shoulder. Then, almost casually, she glanced over at me standing in the entryway.

She said it with a pointed look. "Can't help it. The female lead is such a bitch! She just won't leave!"

Watching them, I felt like I had a lump in my throat.

I remembered that whenever I watched this show before, Richard would always make some snide remark, even if he was just passing by.

"Turn it down. Don't you know how loud that is?

"I seriously don't understand how you can sit through something this mindless. I could never get into it."

Looking back, maybe he didn't actually hate soap operas.

He just hated me.

And because I loved them, he hated them too.

When Richard heard the door open, he shot me a cold glance before looking away.

He didn't say a word.

He was still giving me the cold shoulder over the umbrella.

I pretended not to notice and went to the dining room to eat by myself.

But halfway through my meal, Wendy came in, drawn by the smell of food.

"Yoli, your food smells so good.

"Lucy, is there any left? Get me a plate."

Lucy Parker looked uneasy. "I'm sorry, but your meals and Mrs. Johnson's are specially prepared, so I only made one serving of each."

As soon as she finished speaking, Richard strode in. Without a word, he picked up the tray in front of me and carried it straight over to Wendy.

"It's just one meal, Wen. Go ahead and eat. It's not like I'm going to let you and the baby go hungry.

"Yoli, have Lucy make you something else later. Wendy rarely speaks up about what she wants to eat, and she's your elder. Just let her have this one."

I stared at him, my stomach aching with hunger.

All I could do was grip my fork so tightly that my knuckles turned white.

I still couldn't hold it in. I slammed my fork down and snapped.

"Is the Johnson family so broke you can't afford to feed yourselves? Do you actually have to take food right out of someone else's mouth?

"You're so good to your stepmother. Anyone who didn't know better would think you were marrying her tomorrow!"

Richard looked like I'd hit a nerve. He snapped, "Yolanda, what the hell are you talking about?

"You just got home and you're already throwing a tantrum. Who spoiled you rotten?"

Seeing this, Wendy immediately covered her face and burst into tears, her shoulders trembling with sobs.

Yet she was still putting on an act.

"No, no, that's not it. Yoli, please stop arguing with Richard.

"It's all my fault. I'm pregnant, so I've been craving everything in sight. I don't want this meal anymore. You can have it back, okay?

"You spent three years chasing Richard, and you finally got together with him. You're getting married tomorrow. Please don't let me ruin your wedding!"

The more she played the victim, the darker the anger in Richard's eyes became.

He wrapped an arm around her and tried to soothe her. "Wen, stop crying.

"Why are you apologizing to her? You haven't done anything wrong."

He turned to me and snapped, "Yolanda, if you hadn't spent three years chasing after me like a dog, do you really think I would've dated you or ever agreed to marry you? If you dare go after Wendy again, I swear I'll call off the wedding!"

Wendy clearly didn't want the situation to calm down.

She lifted her tear-streaked face and timidly tugged at Richard's sleeve.

"Richard, please, stop. Yoli only acted this way because she cares about you so much. She's afraid I'll take you away from her.

"I'll move out tomorrow. I don't want to be a third wheel anymore..."

Richard cut her off sharply, his icy gaze stabbing into me.

"Move out? If anyone's leaving, it's her!

"This house is mine, and the Johnson family is mine. Yolanda, pull this stunt again, and tomorrow's wedding is off. You're out of the Johnson family, too!

"Now, apologize to Wen!"

But Richard stared blankly outside. At some point, the sky had darkened, and heavy raindrops hammered against the terminal's glass facade. He glanced at the torrential rain outside before turning to look at me."Yoli, it's raining again."I didn't bring an umbrella."I suddenly remembered a rainy day just like this one five years ago.Richard hadn't brought an umbrella that day either. He stood there, drenched and miserable, at the entrance of the academic building. When I saw his rain-soaked profile, my heart skipped a beat. I opened my umbrella and invited him to walk over with me."Thanks. I'm Richard Johnson, a sophomore majoring in finance."Back then, I thought this must be fate. But now, looking at the disheveled man standing before me, it felt like a lifetime ago.I pulled a black folding umbrella from the side pocket of my luggage and pressed it into Richard's hand.He held the umbrella handle in a daze, his fingers trembling slightly.I looked at him, my heart as still as a s

We sat across from each other at a table by the window.Richard remained silent, his hands clasped on the table. His lips moved several times, but each time, he seemed unable to get the words out.I glanced at my watch, frowning slightly. There was a hint of impatience in my voice."Whatever it is, just say it. I have somewhere to be."He finally spoke, his voice barely more than a whisper at first."I'm sorry. I've been texting you lately, but you never replied."I know you blame me. You have every right to. I blame myself too. I was an asshole!"He raised his head. His eyes were slightly red, as if he had made up his mind after a great deal of hesitation."After everything that's happened, I finally see things clearly. You're the only person in this world who has ever truly cared about me. I was blinded before. I had no idea how lucky I was..."He suddenly leaned toward me and reached for the back of my hand, his voice pleading."Yoli, can we start over? I promise, there'll never be

With that, I hung up.But my phone screen kept lighting up as Richard bombarded me with text messages like a madman. At first, his messages were full of rage and accusations."Why did you abort the baby?"Yolanda, are you out of your mind? How could you make such a huge decision without even talking to me?"That was my child! What right did you have to abort the baby on your own?"After that, the messages took a sharp turn, becoming increasingly remorseful and pleading."Yoli, I'm sorry. I said that out of anger. Please come back. I really know I was wrong."We'll have more children. I promise I'll be a good husband and father from now on. Let's stop fighting, okay?"My dad is gone. The baby is gone. Wendy is gone too. You're all I have left. You're the only one who truly loves me! Yoli, please come back. I can't lose you too."The glow from the screen flickered across my face.I stared at those messages as though I were watching a poorly rehearsed circus act. There had been a time whe

The whole thing was quite a spectacle. The fact that a wedding had turned into a caught-in-the-act scandal involving a stepmother and her stepson was sensational enough on its own. To make matters worse, the Johnson family was one of the area's leading business families.A scandal like this involving a wealthy family was exactly the kind of juicy spectacle people couldn't resist.Normally, a scandal like this would have been locked down immediately. The family would have paid enough hush money to make sure it never saw the light of day. Anyone reckless enough to report it would have been hit with a lawyer's letter and sued into the ground.Yet not a single one of the dozens of media outlets there that day received any hush money. The articles weren't taken down. Instead, they spread across the internet like wildfire.Six or seven of the top ten trending topics were about the scandal."Sleep With His Father, Then His Son? High-Resolution Bedroom Photos of Johnson Group President and His

The entire room fell silent for a few seconds."You bastard! You fucking bastard!"A furious roar shattered the silence.Richard's uncle, Alexander's older brother, was the first to charge forward. He grabbed Richard by the collar and slammed a fist into his face."How can you face your dead father after this?"Alexander hasn't even been gone for six months, and you're already sleeping with your father's woman! Are you even human?"He was trembling with rage as he angrily hurled the photos from the floor at Richard's face. The punch sent Richard stumbling backward, blood spilling from the split corner of his mouth. He wanted to explain, to argue back, but as he stared at the humiliating photographs scattered across the floor and saw the contempt, shock, and disgust in the eyes of the relatives and friends around him, every word caught in his throat. At the same time, Richard's aunt sprang into action.Like a whirlwind, she charged toward Wendy, who was already white with fear. She rais

Thunder boomed outside, and a blinding flash of lightning lit up the entire sky.I looked at Richard, his face twisted with fury, and Wendy, nestled smugly in his arms.I suddenly shook my head and laughed.Richard froze. "You..."I didn't give him a chance to say anything else. I calmly wiped the corner of my mouth, got to my feet, grabbed my bag, pushed open the villa door, and walked out.I held up the umbrella I had refused to give Richard and walked into the rain.Half my body was soon drenched, and I shivered violently from the cold. But my steps never wavered.Another bolt of lightning flashed. It was as if it had suddenly jolted Richard back to his senses. Listening to the heavy rain pounding outside, he realized that he'd been too harsh with his words. After all, it was pouring outside, and I was pregnant.A sudden wave of panic hit him, and he wanted to go after me.But the moment he broke free, Wendy wrapped her arms around him again."Richard, don't go.
