Celestine started cooking at three in the afternoon, flour on her hands, music playing low from her phone and the smell of tomatoes and garlic filling the whole penthouse.

She made the sauce from scratch, the way her grandmother taught her when she was maybe ten years old. She rolled out the pasta into thin ribbons. She set the table with candles and the good plates and flowers she bought from the lady on the corner.

At five o'clock, she showered and put on a simple white dress. She looked at herself in the mirror and practiced saying the words out loud.

"I'm pregnant."

"We're going to have a baby."

"Kier, I'm pregnant."

Each time, her voice cracked a little. But she kept practicing until it sounded almost normal.

At six thirty, she texted him again since he didn't call her when she rang his office some hours ago: "Made your favorite. Coming home soon?"

No response.

At seven, she called. It went straight to voicemail.

She told herself he was busy. He would come. He always came eventually.

At seven thirty, someone knocked on the door.

Celestine's heart jumped. She ran to open it, smoothing her dress and smiling wide.

But it wasn't Kier.

It was Vivienne Thornwell. His mother. Standing in the hallway in a black dress that looked expensive. Her hair was perfect. Her smile was sharp like a blade.

"Darling," Vivienne said, walking past her into the apartment without waiting for an invitation. "I was in the neighborhood. Thought I'd stop by."

Celestine closed the door slowly and her hands were shaking. "Kier isn't here."

"I know." Vivienne looked around the apartment, her eyes landing on the table set for two, the candles, the flowers. "Oh, how sweet. You made dinner. For yourself, I assume? Since my son is never home."

Celestine tucked her trembling hands behind her back. "He's running late. He'll be here."

Vivienne laughed. It was a dry sound, like paper tearing. "Celestine. Dear. Let's not pretend. We both know Kier married you because his father was dying and he felt guilty. We both know this marriage has been a disaster from the start. The only question is how long you're going to keep pretending otherwise."

Celestine felt something hot rise in her chest and she wanted to lash out at Vivienne out but then once again, she swallowed it. She always swallowed it.

"I'm not pretending," she said quietly. "I love him."

Vivienne's smile didn't waver. "Love. How quaint. Tell me, do you think love pays the bills? Do you think love keeps the Thornwell name respected? You're a sweet girl, Celestine. But you're not one of us. You never will be, you are not at our level. I wonder when you will see the handwriting on the wall to know you are a dirty smelly rat?"

Celestine didn't say anything to her.

Vivienne walked to the door, then paused with her hand on the handle. "Oh, and Celestine? Whatever news you were planning to share tonight with my son? Keep it to yourself. He's not in the mood."

Then she left.

The door clicked shut.

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   The Truth About Serena

DAMON'S POV:I took a deep, steady breath of air.The words were right there, sitting on the very tip of my tongue, waiting for me to finally set them free. But they carried so much weight. They brought back old pain. They were the kind of secrets I had never spoken out loud to another living soul, not even to myself during the quiet hours of the night when I sat alone with my own thoughts. They were words that changed everything in an instant. They were words that could never be unsaid once they left my mouth.I looked over at Isabelle. She was standing frozen right where she was in our bedroom, her arms wrapped tightly around our little girl, her brown eyes wide and searching and full of a quiet fear that I had accidentally put there. She was waiting for an explanation. She was waiting for the actual truth. And I owed her every single piece of it."Her name is Serena," I said, keeping my voice low and calm. "She is my half-sister. I found out she existed back when I was still s

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   The Misunderstanding

ISABELLE'S POV:I did not wait for an explanation. The sight of that woman standing so close to my husband, her fingers resting lightly on his arm, her eyes looking up into his face like he belonged to her, it was enough. It was more than enough. It was everything I had ever feared, everything I had ever dreaded, everything I had convinced myself would never happen but had always known, deep down, was entirely possible because as you can all guess, he is a man.I turned on my heel and walked straight out of the living room.My shoes clicked loudly on the smooth floor, sharp and final, each quick step echoing through the wide hallway. I could hear Damon calling my name behind me, his voice urgent, strained, and desperate. But I did not stop. I could not bring myself to stop. If I stopped right now, I would have to turn around and face him. If I faced him, I would have to listen to his neat excuses. And I simply did not have the heart to hear any of it. Did he think I wasn't at hom

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   The Mysterious Woman

ISABELLE'S POV:The nursery was peaceful and quiet, filled only with the gentle breathing of my little girl.Athena was resting safely in my arms, her tiny mouth working as she fed, her expressive eyes fixed directly on my face with that intense and curious focus unique to babies. She had grown so much over the past twelve months. She had learned how to flash a bright smile, let out bubbly giggles, crawl across every inch of the ground, and pull herself up by clutching the living room chairs. She was right on the verge of taking her very first steps, and I knew that once she started walking, there would be no holding her back.I gently stroked her soft dark hair, marveling at how absolute and pure she was. So innocent. So completely and utterly adored."You are so stunning," I whispered to her softly, pressing a kiss to her crown. "Did you know that? You are the most wonderful thing in the entire world."She blinked up at me, her tiny hand curling securely around my index finger

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   Generations of Love

3RD POV:"Ouch," Isabelle gasped, gently untangling her hair from her daughter's tight grip. "That is not very nice at all, little one."Athena just giggled. It was a bright, mischievous sound that suggested she knew precisely what she was doing."She definitely gets that little streak of mischief straight from you," Damon teased."Excuse me," Isabelle raised an eyebrow. "She gets that entirely from you. You are the one who is always pulling my hair.""I do not pull your hair.""You certainly do, every single night when we are trying to go to sleep.""That is completely different.""How on earth is that any different?""It just is," he smiled.Elara and Alistair arrived shortly after with their children in tow.Aurora and Alexander ran through the front entrance first, their faces glowing with sheer excitement. They had been counting down the days for weeks, ever since they heard they were coming to a big birthday celebration."Where is Athena?" Aurora demanded eagerly, bo

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   The Family Reunion

3RD POV:August, who had been unceremoniously deposited onto the nearby sofa by his wildly enthusiastic grandsons, watched them zoom away with a look of amused resignation."Those boys," he said, shaking his head slowly. "They are going to be the absolute death of me one day.""They are going to be the death of themselves first," Athena said, stepping up beside him with a sigh. "I really need to go put a stop to this nonsense.""Just let them have their fun," August chuckled. "They are young. They are foolish. They will learn in time."Athena looked down at her father-in-law with a fond smile. "You are enjoying this far too much, aren't you?""I am simply enjoying watching them enjoy themselves, there is a distinct difference.""There is no difference at all.""There is a very large difference," he insisted. "I am old now, which means I am officially allowed to enjoy things vicariously through their foolishness."Athena let out a soft breath. She looked at her father-in-law,

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   Athena's First Birthday

3RD POV:Some Months Later…DAMON'S Mansion:The grand mansion was completely alive with noise, laughter with that deep radiant warmth that only comes from a house full of people who truly love each other.Cars lined the long driveway in a neat row, a colorful parade of beautiful black sedans, shiny sports cars, and one rather modest vehicle belonging to the local caterer. The sprawling gardens outside had been completely transformed for the day, filled with bright helium balloons, fluttering paper streamers, and a massive banner stretched across the patio that read Happy First Birthday, Athena in letters so large they could probably be spotted from an airplane. Tables groaned under the weight of delicious food, a large bouncy castle shaped like a fairytale palace dominated the lawn, and a patient clown was currently entertaining a circle of mesmerized children with balloon animals and silly jokes.Inside, the house felt delightfully full. Little ones darted through the wide hallw

  • After The Divorce: Ex-Husband Regrets And Begs Me   Kier Thornwell
