Chapter 5

Author: Twlight
On the way to the airport, my father called me personally.

It was loud on his end. He was still at the New York headquarters dealing with family business. I could make out people briefing him about the port and the casino. He went quiet for a few seconds before lowering his voice.

"Lilith, you're really going through with this?"

"Yeah."

"I probably can't make it to see you off today." There was real guilt in his voice. "Don't try to tough things out over there. The European division is our territory, but it's not New York. If anything comes up, go to our people first. If you need money, if you need anything, just tell me."

I held the phone, and my eyes stung for no reason.

He'd already gone through all of this with me the night before. More than once. He even had someone put together a file on which streets near the European division weren't safe.

"I know."

"And one more thing." He paused. His voice went soft. "If you really can't get used to it, come home. New York will always be your home."

I lowered my head and murmured a quiet yes.

After I hung up, I watched the city slide past outside the car window. For the first time, the place I'd lived in for twenty years felt like it could become unfamiliar this quickly.

My phone buzzed.

In the family group chat, Alex had posted a photo.

Irene was sitting in the center of a private jet's sofa. Victor and Alex on either side of her. Champagne and a freshly served meal spread out in front of the three of them.

Alex had tagged me.

[European division trip is finally set.]

Irene followed up right away.

[Lilith, we saved you a seat! Too bad you didn't wanna come.]

I stared at the photo for a few seconds.

The seat they'd "saved" for me was a window spot next to Irene.

Every time the family went out on a job, they'd stick me on the edge. Not because there wasn't room anywhere else, but because they figured I couldn't find my way or handle things on my own. Safest if I stayed in the back.

I'd laughed about it before. Asked why I couldn't sit in the middle with them.

Alex would pat my head and say next time, for sure.

Victor would just laugh. "Does it matter where you sit? Quit being picky."

I actually believed them.

For years.

It wasn't until now that I realized they never lacked a spot for me.

That spot just never mattered that much.

Irene posted another photo.

[The seaside estate in Europe is booked! Apparently there's a private harbor nearby!]

Alex and Victor's replies came instantly.

[Whatever makes you happy.]

[I'll take you when we get there.]

I didn't scroll any further. I turned off my phone.

A few hours later, the plane landed at the private airstrip of the Sicilian division.

The moment I stepped out, a young woman in a dark suit waved at me.

"Lilith?"

I nodded.

"I'm Sienna. Castillo family." She smiled and grabbed my luggage. "Our families have a partnership at the southern port. Your father gave me a heads-up. I'll be looking after you while you're here."

I told her she didn't have to go to the trouble.

She was already dragging my suitcase toward the car.

"Come on. I'll take you to the division first."

"Fair warning though, my sense of direction isn't great either."

I blinked.

She looked back at me and grinned.

"So if we both get lost, don't blame me."

I couldn't help laughing.

That was the first time since arriving in Europe that I actually felt relaxed.

After settling in at the division, I realized this place was nothing like New York.

Nobody treated me like a princess who needed protecting. Nobody assumed everything should be arranged for me just because I was Alex's fiancée.

Sienna just spread the division map out in front of me.

"Here's the dock. Over here's the warehouse. Casino's in the old town. Family safe house is at the foot of the hill."

"Memorize it."

I stared at her.

She handed me a pen.

"If you can't remember it all, that's fine. Walk it a few times and it'll stick."

I looked down at the map, and something I couldn't name stirred inside me.

So this is what it looks like when someone teaches you to find your way.

Not by dumping you in an unfamiliar neighborhood and waiting from a distance for you to stumble back.

But by standing next to you and telling you which way to turn.

A year later, I went back to New York for a family meeting. The moment I stepped out of the car, my father was there to meet me.He looked at me for a long time, eyes full of pride."Finally decided to come back?"I smiled and hugged him."Things in Europe are steady now. Of course I had to come see you."I thought being back in New York would make me uncomfortable. But standing in this city again, I realized the things that used to hurt me were already far away.On the drive back to the estate, my father mentioned something offhand."Oh, by the way. Victor moved out.""His mother had some trouble, and he ended up starting his own security company."I didn't ask more.Later, at a family gathering, I heard the rest from other people.Irene and Victor had split up six months ago.The reason she'd stayed close to them all along was never friendship. She wanted the family resources behind Victor and the business he was set to inherit. But once Victor actually went independent, he didn't ha

A few days later, Alex actually showed up in Europe.Sienna told me he was waiting outside the division.I didn't hide. But when I walked out, the anticipation I used to feel was gone.Alex was standing by the car.He looked more worn out than before. When he saw me, he looked me up and down."You've lost weight."I smiled."Busy over here."He stared at me for a long time."Why aren't you answering my messages?""Because there's nothing to say."His expression stiffened."Is there nothing left between us either?"I looked at him."Alex, do you remember what you told me when we were kids?"He didn't answer."You said as long as you were around, I'd never get lost.""And then you were the one who left me in places I didn't know."His throat moved."I know I messed up.""I just didn't think you'd actually leave."I shook my head gently."I didn't leave out of nowhere.""You pushed me away. A little at a time."He stood there. Didn't argue. After a long silence, he asked quietly. "Will yo

Life at the European division was fuller than I'd expected.Mornings with the family advisor going over port accounts. Afternoons learning warehouse routes and security lines. Evenings eating dinner with Sienna.I was gradually learning to stop relying on the GPS.I could even go to a few shops near the division on my own.One night, my father called."Hey, kid. Got some news for you.""Victor's mother came back to New York."My hand tightened slightly around my cup.He continued. "She's been overseas for years. She finally decided to bring Victor back to her side. Wants to make up for lost time.""Victor asked me today why you suddenly took off to Europe."I was quiet for a few seconds."I told him.""He probably forgot."I really had told Victor I was planning to leave New York. But at the time, he was busy arranging a family dinner for Irene. He didn't even look up. Just said: "Europe sounds nice. I'll come visit when I get a chance."Looking back, I actually felt happy about that s

Two days later, Sienna really did take me to the bay.Right before we left, she tossed me the car keys."You're driving today."I nearly choked. "Me?""Yep."She pointed at the GPS on her phone."Isn't this what you wanted? Practice your sense of direction?""Starting today, you're in charge of getting us there."I took a wrong turn three times along the way.The first time, she just reminded me to check the road signs. The second time, she told me to back up and figure it out myself. The third time, she finally burst out laughing."Lilith, you really do have a gift."My face went red. "What kind of gift?""The gift of turning a straight road into a maze."I laughed in spite of myself and smacked her arm.We made it to the bay in the end.On the way back, she turned off my GPS."Now take us home."I stood there staring at the map for a while, then picked a road and committed to it.I took two wrong turns in the middle, but I actually found the division. When I parked the car, even I co

The next day, Sienna took me around to see the European division's operations. We hit the port first, then the family's private warehouse, and finally a small private dock along the coast. The sunset was spilling across the water, turning the whole sea gold.I stood at the shore and watched for a long time."You like it?"Sienna followed my gaze.I nodded."I grew up in New York. I almost never got to see the ocean like this."She smiled."I'll take you to the real bay in a couple days.""It's too hot today, and the afternoon wind's strong. We'll go when the weather cools down."I looked at her, surprised."You'd really come with me?""Of course." She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world. "It's not every day I get to take a new friend to see the ocean."We looked at each other and laughed at the same time.Later, she took me to the nearby Chinatown.I expected her to do what people in New York always did.
