Chapter 1

I held the award certificate tightly in my hand and called a friend back in my hometown.

“Lisa, I’ve decided to go back.”

“What? That’s sudden!” Lisa sounded excited on the other end of the line. “It’s been seven years since we last saw each other. I’ve missed you so much. By the way, is Gabriele coming back with you? There’s been trouble in the neighborhood lately. If he’s around, he’d be able to handle it.”

My eyes lowered slightly as I replied softly, “He won’t be coming back.”

“Why? He used to follow you around everywhere. Why not this time?” she pressed on, question after question, none of which I could answer.

How was I supposed to say that the father of my child was about to marry another woman? In the end, I simply gave her the date of my return and hung up the call in a hurry.

A cold wind brushed past and slipped under my clothes, the cold seeping straight into my bones. As I turned to leave, I saw Gabriele Carlos walking out with his arm wrapped around a beautiful woman. Our eyes met briefly, and both of us were slightly taken aback.

Perhaps noticing Gabriele’s gaze lingering on me for a second too long, the woman beside him looked at me and asked, “And who is this?”

Gabriele hesitated and didn’t answer right away. In that silence, something suddenly became clear to me.

I lowered my gaze and said, “I’m a servant in the estate.”

The moment I said it, Gabriele’s expression changed noticeably. However, he didn’t say anything in the end.

Around us, the servants all looked at me with amused and almost mocking eyes. I simply ignored them and walked silently toward the small house in the far corner of the estate.

That little building was secluded, but Gabriele had seen to the renovation himself and planted white camellias, my favorite flower, in the courtyard. He even had a chef brought in from my hometown because I couldn’t get used to the food here. The house was also fitted with thick carpets year-round because Stefano was always cold, and the fireplace was never allowed to go out.

Everyone said the Don had given me everything he possibly could, but he never gave us an identity. Only today did I finally realize just how long and hopeless this road had been.

The moment I pushed the door open, Stefano immediately sat up in bed.

“Did Papa see my award certificate? Was he happy?”

His face was pale from the fever, but his eyes were bright in a way that made my heart ache.

I walked over and gently pulled the blanket up around him.

“Yes, he did. He was very happy.”

Stefano tightened his grip on the certificate and asked probingly, “Then will he finally acknowledge us?”

I paused for a moment and then looked away.

“He said… to wait a little longer,” I replied.

The light in Stefano’s eyes dimmed. After a long silence, he let out a small, quiet laugh. “So he’s still not satisfied. Otherwise… why wouldn’t he come when I’m sick?”

Feeling a lump in my throat, I immediately lowered my head and texted Gabriele.

[Stefano has a fever. He wants to see you.]

Gabriele replied quickly. [I’ll come later.]

I let out a sigh of relief and patted Stefano’s head.

“He said he’ll come later.”

A faint spark returned to his eyes. He immediately tucked the certificate beside his pillow and forced himself to pick up his books again. He was afraid that Gabriele wouldn’t see him studying when Gabriele arrived. He was also afraid that he wouldn’t be able to answer anything Gabriele asked him.

Alas, even when the lights went out and the moon had disappeared behind the clouds, no footsteps ever came. I couldn’t let my son be disappointed, so I went to Gabriele’s residence again in the middle of the night.

However, the butler told me, “The Don is attending a concert with Miss Smith.”

I froze.

“Miss Macrino, you should understand. This is not your old dockyard neighborhood. The Carlos family will soon have a true lady of the house.” He paused and then added coldly, “Before he left, the Don instructed that from today onward, you are not allowed to step into the main estate again.”

My face went pale. “Those were his exact words?”

The butler didn’t answer; he simply raised his hand. The next second, guards stepped forward and physically escorted me out.

I returned home in a daze, crying as I called him to demand an answer. The phone rang for a long time, but it was hung up in the end. I stared at the darkened screen and suddenly thought of the past.

That year, when he was surrounded at the old dock, gunfire crackled so loudly that I could hear it through the phone. I had called him just because I had a nightmare, yet he still answered.

Back then, he said, “Faye, don’t be afraid. I’m here.”

It seemed that now the future lady of this family mattered more than anything else.

That night, Stefano’s fever worsened. Half-asleep, he grabbed my sleeve weakly, his voice so hoarse it was barely audible.

“Has Papa come yet?”

Holding back the tears, I could only whisper, “Go to sleep. I’ll be here.”

He went quiet for a long time before suddenly leaning in and giving me a gentle kiss on my cheek.

“You’re the best, Ma.”

I stayed by his side the entire night until I eventually fell asleep, slumped over the bed. When I woke up, a coat had been placed over me.

Gabriele was here, with a private doctor standing behind him. He asked repeatedly whether Stefano would suffer any lingering effects from the fever, and only after getting the doctor’s reassurance did he finally seem to relax. Then, he reached out and touched my forehead.

“You’re running a fever too.”

I turned my head away. His hand froze in midair before he slowly lowered it.

After the doctor left, he finally said in a low voice, “The Smith family was here last night. I couldn’t leave.”

I looked at him and suddenly let out a quiet laugh.

“Couldn’t leave or didn’t want to leave? You didn’t want to leave your fiancée. You wanted to stay with her throughout the concert.”

Gabriele sat in the car, motionless for a long time.A guard stood outside and asked cautiously, “Don Carlos, what should we do next? Should we force our way in?”Gabriele pressed his fingers against his temple, his voice filled with exhaustion. “We’ll deal with it later.”After saying that, he pushed the car door open and walked alone into the streets of Izela. A flower vendor was the first to recognize him. Her eyes widened in shock as she asked, “Mr. Carlos? Is that really you?”She looked down at the white camellias in her hands and couldn’t help but smile.“You used to come here all the time. You always said you were just buying flowers on a whim, but you always only bought the white camellias that Faye loved. Back then, all the women in our neighborhood were so envious of Faye. They all said she must be the happiest woman in the world.”Gabriele didn’t respond. He simply kept walking. Soon after, an old doctor recognized him as well.“Oh my, isn’t this the man that littl

As soon as Gabriele said that, the car doors opened one after another. A line of guards in black suits stepped out and, in an instant, surrounded the entrance of the villa. Dante frowned, instinctively pulling Stefano behind him.My expression darkened.“Gabriele, what are you doing?”Gabriele didn’t answer. He simply stared at Dante. His gaze was so cold that it felt like he might have someone drag Dante away in the next second. Stefano suddenly stepped forward, raising both hands as he stood in front of Dante.“He’s my psychologist. What are you going to do to him?”Gabriele’s body stiffened. It was as if he hadn’t expected Stefano to speak to him in such a distant, guarded tone. After a few seconds, he repeated, “Psychologist?”Stefano didn’t respond. He just stood in front of me, his small fists clenched tightly, his eyes slowly turning red.Sensing something was wrong, Dante leaned toward me and said something in a low voice. Then, he bent down, picked Stefano up, and wa

Once we were back in Izela, the first person I went to see was Lisa. It had been seven years since we last saw each other. She was overwhelmed with emotion the moment she laid eyes on me, but the second her gaze shifted to Stefano, she froze.Without having me explain, she recognized immediately that Stefano was Gabriele’s child. The resemblance between father and son was just too strong. It was not just in their facial features, but also in that same cold, quiet presence they carried.I had originally worried that Stefano wouldn’t adapt to this place, but reality proved I had underestimated him. Even though he was only seven, he had suffered more hardship than most children his age.In his attempts to earn his father’s approval, Stefano had mastered languages, etiquette, and firearms training. Along the way, he also learned patience, observation, and restraint. So, after coming here, he never showed disgust or complained. When we passed people in worn, tattered clothes who reached

From that night onward, Gabriele’s actions accelerated noticeably. What had once been a relatively gentle form of probing turned far more direct. He began frequently accompanying Kate to formal dinners, attending meetings with the Smith family elders, and overseeing so-called “post-marriage partnership” discussions.Kate, however, took it all as proof of his deep affection and thought nothing more of it. So, after dinners, she would lean into his arms and casually complain about which members of the Smith family were too greedy. When trying on jewelry, she would half-brag, half-tease about the most profitable shipping routes her father controlled. Even late at night, when she was in a good mood from his coaxing, she would voluntarily mention details about the Smith family’s accounts and private warehouses. She spoke without much thought, but Gabriele memorized every single word without missing a detail. At the same time, reports about Stefano and me were constantly delivered to his

Gabriele froze, his phone in his hand.On the golf course, Kate had just finished her swing. The white ball rolled smoothly across the perfectly trimmed green as applause broke out around her. She turned back with a soft smile, as if waiting for his reaction.Gabriele lowered his gaze and said in a deeper voice, “Look into it and report back to me.”He hung up without waiting for a response and walked back toward the course.Kate twirled the golf club in her hand and said, “Don Carlos, it’s your turn.”Gabriele gave a barely audible response as he stepped behind her. He guided her posture, his hand covering hers as he adjusted her swing. However, the moment his fingertips brushed her waist, he stopped almost imperceptibly. For reasons he couldn’t explain, thoughts of me flashed through his mind. I had a petite build. Back then, every time he pulled me into his arms in that broken shack by the old dock, he could effortlessly lift me off the ground as if I weighed nothing at all.

I rushed forward and pushed Kate away.“What gives you the right to touch my son?”I checked his face over in panic. Only when I realized it was red wine, not blood, did I finally manage to breathe again. Seconds later, a sudden commotion broke out behind me. I turned around to see that Kate had fallen beside shattered glass and broken plates, her wrist cut by a sharp piece of porcelain. Yet, I knew I hadn't pushed her nearly hard enough to cause a fall like that. The banquet hall doors suddenly flung open, and Gabriele strode in. The first thing he saw was Stefano, drenched in red wine. In that instant, his expression changed sharply, and he instinctively moved toward Stefano. However, before he could take another step, someone beside Kate cried out, “Don Carlos, Miss Smith is injured!”Gabriele froze mid-step. Then, he turned and walked straight toward Kate instead.“Who did this?” he asked.Immediately, people around made mocking statements. “All the kid had to do was se
